Debian Hardware :: WLAN Fails To Connect And / Or Is Very Slow

Mar 26, 2015

I've tried out many Debian distros and noticed the ones that I try based on Ubuntu, my USB WiFi adapter works fine and I don't really have any issues. When I try one that is based on current Jessie, I have sporadic WiFi issues and just overall instability with regards to connectivity and audio playback. I have tried two distros based on Jessie and had very similar results on both. Is there anything in particular I can try? I've done everything short of installing Debian stable and just pointing to Jessie. I've done that in a VM so I know I can handle it, but wanted to se if there was anything I should be trying first. I just didn't think a distro based directly on Jessie and Jessie backports would be any different from installing base Jessie as far as compatibility is concerned.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell WLAN Card - Ethernet Port Does Work

Jul 28, 2010

I have a Dell WLAN 1397 Half Minicard, 802.11 b/g card in my laptop, and I can't seem to get ubuntu to work with it. I tried this method:

1. Synaptic Pack Manager
2. Check "Install from Boot Disc"
3. Reload
4. Install and apply bcmwl-kernel-source
5. Reboot

This didn't work for me, so I tried entering sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source and that also didn't work. Another thing I tried is formatting my Ubuntu partition and reinstalling, and retrying both of those methods. The ethernet port does work, however.

Debian Installation :: Creating A Live USB (Not Booting On EeePc)

Apr 8, 2016

I'm trying to rebuild an old laptop, EeePc 1001PX and I've issues to boot on the usb on it.

I've followed [URL] .... and the only way I manage to make a usb key that will boot is by hd-media/boot.img.gz:

Code: Select all# zcat boot.img.gz > /dev/sdb
# mount /dev/sdb /media/usb
# cp /tmp/debian-8.4.0-i386-CD-1.iso /media/usb
# sync
# umount /media/usb

I managed to install Debian using this technique to build the usb key.

However I'm having an issue on the laptop with the wifi card (Atheros AR9285) and after a night trying to make it work I'd like to check if I'd would have the same issue Ubuntu.

So I've been desperately trying to make a bootable usb key with Ubuntu on it.... It boots on my laptop but not on this EeePc...

I've tried:

Code: Select allcat /tmp/myimage.iso > /dev/sdb
Code: Select alldd if=/tmp/myimage.iso of=/dev/sdb && sync

I've installed multibootusb [URL] ... and liveUsb install [URL] .... which doesn't work on my EeePc...

Wh only this technique of using is hd-media/boot.img.gz is working on that laptop?

I'd like to try to install Ubuntu via grub using a partition [URL] .... but I need to create 2 partitions and so to boot on a external system.

I've downloaded gparted-live-0.25.0-3-i686.iso but like with Ubuntu I don't manage to create a bootable USB key for this crappy EeePc.

However, I have a problem with installing Debian on a EeePC (ASUS PC1201) which uses Winows 7. I can not even get started because I can not understand the information that I have on my hard drive partitions. Windows 7 says that I have the following :

Local Disk(D:) 49.8 GB free of 83.8.GB
NewVolume(G:) 948 KB of 0.99 GB
Local Disk(F:) 37.9 GB free of 38..0 GB
(Originally the ASUS only had two partitions C: and D: I used Gparted to genetate F: and G:)
gparted-live-0.7.1.5 says that I have the following :-
/dev/sda1 ntfs 992.5 KB
/devf/sda2 ntfs 100.00 GB with 66.09GB unused
/dev/sda3 ntfs 132.88GB with 129.88 GB unused

Debian Squeeze (the net install version) will not install. G was the result of trying to provide some swap space. How do I prepare the hard drive so that Squeeze it will install on F: ?

Debian :: Building And Installing WLAN Driver

Sep 4, 2011

I'm fairly new to Linux. I am trying to build and install the drivers for the ASUS USB-N10 wlan usb dongle, using the newest drivers from the Realtek website. I've never used make before on Linux and am running into what are probably some pretty basic problems, but I'm not sure where to look for the answers. I used aptitude to install the "make" and "build-essential" packages. I unpacked the drivers using Archive Manager. I changed to the driver directory and ran "make". It stopped with "No such file or directory." I became superuser and ran make, in case it had permission problems when creating the directory.

Here are the results.
obie@four:~/realtek/rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.6.0.20110401/driver/rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.6.0.20110401$ make

make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-686/build: No such file or directory. Stop.

I haven't modified the makefile in any way -- it is the same as what I downloaded. I've read posts from other users who have compiled and installed the drivers on Ubuntu with no problem.

The contents of the directory I'm in when I run make are as follows:

Debian Configuration :: Wlan Really Slow Under Lenny

Jan 10, 2010

i use a telekom s100 set-top-box, which originally had a prism54 wlan-card. but wlan was very slow. but the driver was working well and it did not seem to be a configuration issue, so i assumed that its that card which is so slow. following i purchased a atheros based wlan-card which is working perfectly well with the ath5k driver of my linux kernel (2.6.26-1-686). but the connection is pretty bad anyway. i get max 300kb/s from pc to pc. as its the same with 3 different cards i tested in the s100 i assume it is a configuration issue? or might there be chipset or mini-pci-slot limitation?

when i check the connection with iwconfig the bitrate is somewhere between 1-54mb/s, rising to 54mb/s and then falls back to 1mb/s, rising to 54mb/s again, falling down, its an infinite loop. im using wpa_supplicant for the connection, but i don't think thats the malefactor. well, you never know .. i tried to set the bitrate with iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M but that ended in a disconnection ...

Debian Configuration :: WLAN Disappears With Upgrade Of Squeeze?

Feb 9, 2011

My version of Squeeze was about half a year old when I updated/upgraded it just now. As part of the (longish) process I was advised to run apt-get autoremove, which removed what looked like a stunning amount of material. As another part I noticed a huge number of error messages about nonexistent locale files (I think) whizzing by.

Well, the result has various cosmetic changes and no doubt fewer bugs, but it doesn't have WLAN. I used to see an icon at the top right like two tadpoles chasing each other, turning into a set of green (if I was lucky) or grey (if not) bars. No longer. No tadpoles, no bars, no error message, nothing.

This very recent thread ("Just isntall debian 6.0, wired networking ok but no wireless") looks helpful. However, I don't know what WLAN hardware I've got or how to get a text dump of this kind of thing. 4D696B65 kindly points the person who asked to wiki.debian.org/ipw2200. I don't know whether I have any of these "Intel PRO/Wireless 2100, 2200 and 2915 devices" but I'm encouraged to read there that [the file] is now also available in the nonfree-firmware tarball which we build regularly on cdimage.debian.org. Supply this blob on a CD/floppy/USB drive etc. and d-i will do the right thing. I don't know what either "blob" or "d-i" means, but I was rather hoping that some software or other would look at the hardware, look at the available firmware, and install accordingly (as happened months ago). So got the (small) file; I opened it up; I copied the contents to a CD (even though it's not an ISO). But apt-cdrom add is not interested.

I than installed the b43-firmware as described in the debian wiki [URL]. I updated the init-ramfs, everything is working as expected, except for WLan.

It shows up using iwconfig, i can get it up and down using ifconfig (or ifup, ifdown). I can't do a scan using iwlist - it says: % iwlist wlan0 scan > Failed to read scan data : Resource temporarily unavailable

It always fails, but not with the same error message. Sometimes it also comes up with > device or resource busy

Using dmesg I see reports about a fatal DMA error, resulting in a controller RESET. It says it's loading firmware 478.104 .
