I have an Hp officejet 4500 connected on Local Network. I have hplip and cups too. Cups is enabled as service but system refuses to see my printer. I also installed all PPD's. How to make it work?
View 2 RepliesTotal Newb here, sorry. I am pseudo-IT at work and have set up a desktop with Debian 5 (accidentally overwrote Windows in the process, but there you go). We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. If I download the Linux driver, what do I do next?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've bought a HP Photosmart printer, HP Photosmart wireless e-All-in-One printer - B110a and i've got a problem installing it properly. I'm using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. When i connect the printer, Debian doesn't recognize my printer as the Photosmart B109 printer for unknown reason. When i go to the site of HP and search for a driver, it directs me to this site:I've downloaded that latest hplip file as a .run file and installed it. My printer is recognized proparly, but when i try to print a colored image, it comes out black/white. Something is not crrect. Does anyone recognize this problem with this type HP printer?

How do I install the printer on my home network? Is there something I have to do with Debian? The Debian computer has a parallel port for my printer. The Vista computer does not have a parallel port; so I can only use the Debian computer.

View 14 Replies View RelatedHaving made the transition from a certain widely used operating system to linux, suse 11.2, x64, successfully and pleasantly we are still left with a few problems.One of these is a few applications i have to use which run only in that old OS. ?To that end I have installed VirtualBox and got them to run with one glitch. I cannot print from VBox to my HP LaserJet 4000, lpt1 printer, which works fine in suse. Searching and posting on the Vbox forums turned up that lpt1 is not supported in the current vbox and that I need to set up a virtual network, set up the printer as a network printer and set it up as an lpd/lpr printer in Vbox WinXP. Have tried many different ways to do this without success, I think the problem is I do not know how to set up a network printer in Linux.
The virtual network is vboxnet0, which does show up in ifconfig, along with my eth0 net, and I can ping the windows guest, gateway and the host from either side host:suse/guest:winXP) respectively. Have tried numerous ways of setting up printer in YaST which works in suse but still does not work from WinXP guest. Have read the suse manual and several sources and searched forums with no results.Finally I am thinking I just don't know how to set up a network printer in linux. Using cups, kde, suse 11.2, don't know what else to tell. Samba is installed, although I am not using it to the best of my knowledge.
I run Debian Squeeze but I have the system installed step by step from minimal installation. So I'm not sure if I have forgotten basic packages important for printing. I open system-config-printer to add a new network printer. In the list of the Network Printers after some seconds it appears the HP Color LaserJet 2600n. I chose it and hit Forward. A new window opens that says that system is searching for Drivers and finally I'm ready for printing.

Am I correct in assuming that this means that a network printer will not work? Is there a way to override this while still using synaptic package manager? Would I then be able to use a network printer?
I have my eye on the HP photosmart plus B209A - and it looks like HPLIP supports it (there is a ppd file for it).
I use a 'wifi hotspot' provided by my mobile (android) phone for internet/email and to connect to my wifi capable HP p1102w printer. Installation and use of the printer worked perfectly until I bought a new phone, again android with 'wifi hotspot' capability. The wifi connection on my new phone works fine for internet and email but it totally fails to detect my printer.
I have tried to detect and connect to the printer using system-config-printer and using the HP utility hp-setup. Both fail to detect the printer on the 'new' wifi network.
The old network connection which detects the printer as expected gives the following output:

how to get clients connecting to an office printer. during a migration from windows server to debian/samba.
We have:
5 windows XP machines one Windows Server 2003 machine, PDC of the old domain One debian Samba PDC (of TEST domain)/print server (with CUPS installeD) running in a virtual machine hosted by the windows server One Toshiba eStudio 3511 printer
Using the CUPS control panel, I've been able to autodetect and add the printer, and it appears as an available share in SWAT for samba. However, the driver isn't perfect. CUPS could only supply drivers for the 3510c, not the 3511.
However, clients on the TEST domain are unable to access it. Doing so gives an error about a local policy preventing a connection to the print queue. I've tried googling this error and the fix that comes up in every result about changing a point and print policy setting, does not work.
however, I've been able to work around the issue. by first logging in as local administrator, navigating to the domain server, then inputting the domain root account credentials at the prompt. That allows me to attempt to connect to printers, but with a different error
"The server for the printer does not have the correct driver installed...."
I very strongly suspect that the 3510 driver actually will work, but it's just not being shared properly. The printer driver share folder is /var/lib/samba/printers, and that directory contains only a few empty subfolders. CUPS did not place the driver there as I would expect, and that is where clients are looking for it.
The thing is, I have no idea where CUPS DID put the driver.
On the old domain, the printer uses drivers for es4511, and looking on the toshiba site, this seems to be what they provide. The Toshiba Site provides a huge variety of drivers, including several windows ones, a universal driver, and a CUPS PPD. Cups asks for an optional PPD during install and I tried supplying that. It said installed successfully, but didn't change anything.
I've tried pasting the windows drivers into /var/lib/samba/printers/W32X86 too, and likewise with other drivers from toshiba's site. but this doesn't change anything either, so I'm at a bit of a loss.

I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?

View 4 Replies View Relatedi have 3 comps(running suse 11.3) and a laptop(running vista sp2). i have installed samba on all suse comps. i have a printer attached to one of the comps and it has been shared also the internet connection on that comp has been shared. all the computers are connected using lan cables through an ethernet switch. i also have a wireless router which is connected to the ethernet switch.
I am able to view all the comps on the network except the laptop running vista. all the desktops are visible on the network and are able to print and share files on the network and also connect to the internet. the laptop running vista can connect to the internet but its not visible on the network and nor can it share files across the network or access the printer.
I successfully added/shared a network printer in SUSE 11.3 32 bit, but when I try on the 64 Bit box it didn't work out very well.What ports need to be open ? Is it necessary to open port 631 in YAST->Firewall->Advance- >UDP and IPP ?(TCP 631 already open) What services need to be running? Here is the error log :

I have two Suse un-firewalled computers connected via NFS. About a year ago I found instructions for a very SIMPLE way to share a CUPS connected printer using Yast. When I installed 11.4 I lost the instructions. It required no config file editing and took about two minutes. Google searches focus on complicated SMB-Linux connections like those suggested by swerdna.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm using an up-to-date installation of Squeeze with the default Gnome desktop and am trying to print. My knowledge of configuring printers is very limited if it even exists. Since a friend of mine is able to print from her Ubuntu computer, my plan is to copy her. Here's how she does it. She goes under System->Administration->Printing on the desktop. Then a window pops up titled "Printing" that lists various printers that are supposed to exist. It's possible to add one by selecting Add->Printer. It asks for the root password and then a new window pops up titled "New Printer" which has a subwindow called "Select Device" In my case, the "Select Device" window has the following options to choose from:
- AppSocket/HP JetDirect
- Internet Printing Protocol (ipp)
- LPD/LPR Host or Printer
In her case, she has an extra option called "Windows Printer via Samba". This is the option that she uses. The other options don't seem to work for her. I'm assuming that I just need to install some package in order to make this option magically pop up for me. Does anyone know what package this may be? I currently have the packages smbclient, samba-common and samba-common-bin installed..........
I have a canon printer which was working so far. After my latest upgrade its giving errors saying "Printer not connected -- Check your connection" Fortunately I had a backup of my root before the upgrade and one difference I see is that on the new system theres no /dev/usb/lp0 which there is on the old one. So how do I make it? Or should I use the /dev/lp0? Note they are different:

My home network has 2 Kubuntu machines (mine), a Windows 7 laptop, a vista laptop and a Freecom FSG network storage device which acts as a file and printer server. I bought a Kodak multifunction device as a friend has one and I liked the idea of cheaper printing. It's a good bit of kit, if printing directly from a windows machine via a USB connection but from linux boxes and networked from the win 7 box, it's crap, often needing rebooting before it will print (if it prints at all). Can anyone recommend me a (cheap) printer that will be more suited to linux ? not bothered about photo quality, I'll keep the kodak for that and just connect via usb or plug in SD card directly.

The printer shows up under then Computer->Network->Dell laser printer 1700n, but that is all. Looking under properties just gives me a location of network:///. Cups cannot seem to find it. It would be nice to be able to use the printer. Owners are out of contact for quite a while.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) on a desktop that is part of a small home network. The server has a laser printer on its parallel port. I want to use the printer connected to the server.
If I go to System>Administration>Printing and click on "add printer" a box opens with choices, one of which is to find a network printer.
What do I enter in the box that asks for the Host location?
If I enter the name of the server, or its IP address, and click the "Find" button, it goes to work and says "searching", then comes back and says "printer not found at that address".
What is the correct way to enter the location of the network Host and its printer?
The server is running Ubuntu 10.10 server edition.
