Debian Configuration :: Setting Up A CUPS/Samba Shared Network Printer?
Aug 19, 2010how to get clients connecting to an office printer. during a migration from windows server to debian/samba.
We have:
5 windows XP machines one Windows Server 2003 machine, PDC of the old domain One debian Samba PDC (of TEST domain)/print server (with CUPS installeD) running in a virtual machine hosted by the windows server One Toshiba eStudio 3511 printer
Using the CUPS control panel, I've been able to autodetect and add the printer, and it appears as an available share in SWAT for samba. However, the driver isn't perfect. CUPS could only supply drivers for the 3510c, not the 3511.
However, clients on the TEST domain are unable to access it. Doing so gives an error about a local policy preventing a connection to the print queue. I've tried googling this error and the fix that comes up in every result about changing a point and print policy setting, does not work.
however, I've been able to work around the issue. by first logging in as local administrator, navigating to the domain server, then inputting the domain root account credentials at the prompt. That allows me to attempt to connect to printers, but with a different error
"The server for the printer does not have the correct driver installed...."
I very strongly suspect that the 3510 driver actually will work, but it's just not being shared properly. The printer driver share folder is /var/lib/samba/printers, and that directory contains only a few empty subfolders. CUPS did not place the driver there as I would expect, and that is where clients are looking for it.
The thing is, I have no idea where CUPS DID put the driver.
On the old domain, the printer uses drivers for es4511, and looking on the toshiba site, this seems to be what they provide. The Toshiba Site provides a huge variety of drivers, including several windows ones, a universal driver, and a CUPS PPD. Cups asks for an optional PPD during install and I tried supplying that. It said installed successfully, but didn't change anything.
I've tried pasting the windows drivers into /var/lib/samba/printers/W32X86 too, and likewise with other drivers from toshiba's site. but this doesn't change anything either, so I'm at a bit of a loss.
how to install/setup drivers on a samba PDC, for windows machines?

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up Ad-hoc Network To Printer?
Mar 28, 2011I recently purchased an hp 3050 printer because of it's wireless functionality. I found this (click me) where someone got it working. I tried to follow it step by step, but I couldn't get the ad-hoc network to work reliably.
I used the network manager to locate the printer's ad hoc network (it correctly identified it as ad-hoc) I then edited this connection, made it a "Link-local only" network in the ipv4 tab and then connected.
Usually what happens is that networkmanager claims that it has connected. I get a signal strength and everything, but I can't actually communicate with the printer. I entered the ip address (into firefox) given to me by asking the printer to print it's network settings, and I don't get a response.
Notice that I said "usually". I've tried this many times, and one time, I actually connected to the printer, got the browser interface, tried to use the interface to connect the printer to my wireless router, and failed (then the browser interface didn't work anymore [which of course would make sense if the printer tried to connect to the router, but I don't even know if I got far enough into the process for that to be the problem]). The printer does not show up as a device on my wireless router (my router has a list of all devices that are logged into it), so it failed somehow. I have never been able to duplicate that "success" again in spite of the fact that I've used the printers control panel to reset network defaults.
It seems that the people who were on the questions forum had no problem connecting the ad-hoc network. I kind of suspect that there is something wrong with the printer's wireless device.
PS: I noticed that hp-setup has an option to plug a wireless printer in via USB, set it up then it should work wirelessly, however, I couldn't get that to work with this printer.

Sep 1, 2010My work has got a new Sharp MX-1800N network printer. The setup requires user authentification, one password for printing b&w, another for printing color. However when they try to set up my netbook running ubuntu desktop 10.04 they don't get it to prompt for a password, which makes the printer reject the printout. How do you fix this?

I have yet to get the old system they were attached to up and running, I want to try to get the printer up and running under a modern linux install. The printer is a LP11 and attaches via serial. The most simple way to me seems to be via LPD, but Im not sure on how to proceed.

We are set up with network printers here (all Windows), and I was wondering how to go about being able to print to one of the network printers from my Linux desktop. Can I even connect to the Windows network with this desktop (it is hooked up)? Understand, I do NOT want to screw up anything on the network - they won't let me play anymore if I do. If I download the Linux driver, what do I do next?

Jan 17, 2010Having made the transition from a certain widely used operating system to linux, suse 11.2, x64, successfully and pleasantly we are still left with a few problems.One of these is a few applications i have to use which run only in that old OS. ?To that end I have installed VirtualBox and got them to run with one glitch. I cannot print from VBox to my HP LaserJet 4000, lpt1 printer, which works fine in suse. Searching and posting on the Vbox forums turned up that lpt1 is not supported in the current vbox and that I need to set up a virtual network, set up the printer as a network printer and set it up as an lpd/lpr printer in Vbox WinXP. Have tried many different ways to do this without success, I think the problem is I do not know how to set up a network printer in Linux.
The virtual network is vboxnet0, which does show up in ifconfig, along with my eth0 net, and I can ping the windows guest, gateway and the host from either side host:suse/guest:winXP) respectively. Have tried numerous ways of setting up printer in YaST which works in suse but still does not work from WinXP guest. Have read the suse manual and several sources and searched forums with no results.Finally I am thinking I just don't know how to set up a network printer in linux. Using cups, kde, suse 11.2, don't know what else to tell. Samba is installed, although I am not using it to the best of my knowledge.

Jan 11, 2011I run Debian Squeeze but I have the system installed step by step from minimal installation. So I'm not sure if I have forgotten basic packages important for printing. I open system-config-printer to add a new network printer. In the list of the Network Printers after some seconds it appears the HP Color LaserJet 2600n. I chose it and hit Forward. A new window opens that says that system is searching for Drivers and finally I'm ready for printing.

Aug 3, 2010The office network has a machine we're using as a fileserver, which is running Windows Server 2003. There are several issues with this, but the main one is that the "Terminal Server License Server" was never installed or activated. I managed to do these things, but to continue requires retail keys which are long since lost. So the boss says we're going to make it into a linux server instead. And by we, he means me. A friend recommended Debian so my research starts here. i have a little experience running an ubuntu desktop at home, using the console quite a lot. And a little bit of experience messing with my own server. however, most of this is new territory for me.
The needs of the organisation:
1. We need a shared directory on the server which all valid accounts can access
2. We need a per-user directory on the server for each user, which only that user or root can access.
3. We need a per-user windows desktop, which only that user or root can access.

Debian Configuration :: Setting Up A Network Bridge?
Apr 9, 2011I have two ethernet NIC's on my debian server. One built-in Realtek [eth0] (attached to internet), and a PCI Nvidia ethernet card [eth1] (attached to my Win7 netbook). I used this guide to setup the bridge: url. It worked when I was behind a router. But when I moved the computer in front of the router, to direct connect to the internet, the internet stopped functioning on any device that I plug into my Nvidia NIC. The name of my bridge is 'br0'. Does anyone know how to fix it, so I can route the internet to my second NIC?

Exactly what I am trying to do: Existing network is as follows: Comcast internet to cable modem to Belkin N Wireless Router Model F5D 8236-4 v3. That router is wired to one desktop (running Windows XP)and has 4 wifi notebooks (two running Windows 7 and two running Mint 9 Isadora) and two Wii consoles running off of it. I am seeking to add another desktop to the network in another room without having to drill some holes and run about 40 feet of cable. Seems like it shouldn't take much to get the two routers to "talk" to each other so I can do this. The router I am trying to hook to it is either a Belkin F5D 9230-4 wireless router or a NetGear N150 WNR1000 v2 Wireless router.

Sep 21, 2015I use a 'wifi hotspot' provided by my mobile (android) phone for internet/email and to connect to my wifi capable HP p1102w printer. Installation and use of the printer worked perfectly until I bought a new phone, again android with 'wifi hotspot' capability. The wifi connection on my new phone works fine for internet and email but it totally fails to detect my printer.
I have tried to detect and connect to the printer using system-config-printer and using the HP utility hp-setup. Both fail to detect the printer on the 'new' wifi network.
The old network connection which detects the printer as expected gives the following output:

Nov 26, 2010I am putting together a server and computer lab at my school for Standardized testing, and am planning on using debian for it. But first, i must prove to the school board that this is a possible and viable option, so right now it is one pc with 1 gig ram (Going to be the server for this experiment), and two others with around 512 mb ram.the problem with all this is, the computers in the lab cannot have hard drives, as there is some sort of licencing issue. So I need to be able to have these two testing computers boot from the server's hard drive.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Locate Printer Drivers In Network Printer Setup?
Oct 19, 2010I am trying to set uamsung clx2160N as a standalone network printer on my home network. It is a printer with standalone network capability and is connected directly to my router and has a static IP number. We have a few Windows computers at home and they had no problem detecting the printer, installing the drivers and working. Unfortunately my Ubuntu computer recognises the printer and I can even access it's setup and diagnositcs through its IP number. However when I try to add it as a printer, drivers for it cannot be located. #ve tried setting it up three ways:1. Using Samsung's own setup package - finds printer and all the details it needs to work but offers no drivers2. Using Ubuntu's printer setup - recognises printer but stalls at Searching for Drivers dialog3. Trying to *** printer using CUPS - no problem finding and recognising printer, but when I come to search for the driver I get Internal Server Error.
I have of course been trying to do all of these as root. That's the limit of my knowledge reached and searches on the net aren't helping me either. The printer works fine directly connected via USB, so the drivers are on the computer somewhere. How do I get them set up to use the printer on the network?
Debian Configuration :: WiFi Connection Stuck At (Setting Network Address)
Oct 9, 2015I have Debian 8.2 with KDE 4.14 and everything runs perfect, except for the internet connection. This problem happens randomly when I turn on my machine. Sometimes when the desktop loads, the connection is already settled.
But sometimes when the desktop loads, the wifi icon is still loading and keeps stuck at "setting network address". Since this problem happens randomly I really don't know what is happening here. My wifi chip is this:

Sep 16, 2010I have a copy of OpenSuSE which works fine, but like previous older versions of Linux it is difficult to setup the printer which is a HP 2605dn color laserjet. Once, I was able to get it setup using the CUPS software online, but was only able to print out a test copy and after that I was where I was before the setup.
This problem also happened on a Netbook computer which came with Ubuntu on it. The OS was able to pick up the network printer the first time too. On OpenSuSE it does not pick it up automaticly and and it seems to be difficult to setup using the built in software, or the cups system.

Jun 14, 2010I run a couple Ubuntu machines in the house, my wife runs XP, there's an eee, etc. I got a Samsung ML-02851ND printer thinking that I could just plug it into my router and then install the printer on all of the various machines and I could print from them. I guess I realize that I can hook up the printer to a host machine and go that route, but i thought the whole point was to hook the printer up to the router.

Jul 12, 2011Today I dug out an HP C7280 Wireless printer from my parents garage (very nice printer despite being 3 or so years old). I fixed it up and plugged it in and it worked like a charm. Only thing is I want to set it up to work wirelessly as we don't have any extra Printer cables. I cant get it to work though. Firstly, it has no IP address despite wireless being turned on in the printer.
Secondly, and this is probably the main problem, it has no IP address. It just says "No link" or "Not applicable" under network settings. After a lot of digging through google, I've tried everything I could find, from configuring CUPS and HPIJS and the like. Right now I have it plugged into ethernet and it has an IP but entering it into the URL bar of firefox gets nothing. It isn't detected by the printing app in ubuntu, either.
