I'm running Debian 6.0 with the 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem kernel. I also have just moved to a new mobo which has an 82801JI based sound card. When the snd-hda-intel modules loads I get the following error:

I am having some problems getting the onboard sound card on my Intel DP45SG motherboard to work properly under openSuse 11.1. Yast appears to have detected the card as a 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller, but I cannot get any sound out of the card at all.
I have tried to follow this thread, and have run the alsa-info script, the results of which are posted here. It appears to me that the codec that is listed in the alsa script, which is the IDT 92HD73E1X5, is not the same as that which is listed on Intel's site for this board, which is the IDT 92HD73E codec. Can anyone help me out with regards to getting this going? Additional info below:

And it won't boot, so I checked the drive with gparted on my desktop, and get some errors about invalid block sizes and corrupt partitions. When I try fdisk, it lists an EFI partition as I would expect, and then another partition with the right size, but its listed as type empty. I also get some invalid size errors there. This happens with an older iso I have successfully used in the past. When I run fdisk on the ISO file, I get the same errors as the USB drive. Here's the output

I think my issue is with the message about 2048 vs 512 byte block sizes. I tried setting up partitions on my drive and just copying data to them from the iso. This makes the BIOS recognize the USB disk and it tries to run the bootloader, but fails since the symlinks are messed up copying that way. I've tried a few different boxes (all running sid) and I get the same results on all of them.

The Debian computer with UFW active is responding to the pings, when it should be ignoring them.Rebooting the Debian computer doesn't fix the problem.This setup is very simple. I'm using all UFW defaults.This is a new Debian 8.2 install (clean) with all updates.
Decided to swap from ubuntu to full blown debian - and glad I did - just feels right using debian to me. Anyways. On my desktop im trying to edit my "Applications" menu" so that it includes "Programming" and "Other" sections of the menu. So i righclick "Applications" goto "Edit Menus" and try to checkbox the "Programming" & "Other" menu options. Alas as soon as I check them - the tick dissapears again - and there is no way for me to edit the menu. Its my system I have full access.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got an LG CD/DVD player/writer in my desktop, and it's suddenly stopped working. No error messages at all, but it doesn't acknowledge any discs any more, whether they're CDs or DVDs or CDRWs or anything. How can I diagnose what's wrong? It's only 1.5 years old so I wouldn't expect it to be a hardware problem really, but I can't think of anything else. At first I thought I'd broken something with Squeeze, but I ran a live system from USB stick and it also can't read any discs at all. Also I tried a bootable DVD and couldn't get that to boot either, so I'm pretty confident it's not a software problem. It's always worked fine before and hasn't had any shocks or moves or anything (that I know of). The green light flashes when I close the drawer, just flashes a few times and then stops. There's nothing in /var/log/messages. Are there any tricks to figure out what might be wrong or is it looking like I need to buy a replacement drive?

Last nigth I upgrade my system to squeeze and it whent well except for grub-pc and udev. If i try to upgrade now udev will not install do to problems with the kernel version and grub-pc can't seem to find the boot image.

I have been using Debian for 3 or 4 years, I have never used LXDE before. After several attempts and searches through google, I succeeded to change the screen resolution to 1024x768 but LXDE is retaining this resolution for only one session: I have to change the resolution every time I use LXDE.

I have trouble setting up NFS on Debian Squeeze (2.6.32-5-kirkwood armv5tel GNU/Linux) running on a Sheevaplug. After some digging and googling I found that the NFS server is (probably) not properly installed.
no rules in iptables or hosts.allow or hosts.deny. Fresh OS install.
apt-get install --reinstall nfs-kernel-server
generates this output:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI used gparted in PartedMagic to resize my /home partition from 360GB to 160GB, and create a new FAT32 partition out of the remaining 200GB.My /home directory only had about 9GB worth of files in it and as far as I can tell there was no reason for any of them to be anywhere near the portion which was deleted. So the resizing and creating the new partition seemed to go fine. Then I rebooted and it got stuck while booting into Debian.
I tried checking my BIOS for an IOMMU option but there doesn't seem to be one at all. I also only have 4GB of RAM so I don't know why it thinks I have 4.75GB.
I've done the ordinary sources.list update (lenny to squeeze) and Code: sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install dpkg apt aptitude.sudo aptitude full-upgrade However, udev failed to install, and I used..Code: touch /etc/udev/kernel-upgrade and did full-upgrade again. Everything was going fine, I went through several package configurations and suddenly, after 30-40 minutes of "Unpacking Setting up." I just heard two system beeps and got an error similar to a kernel panic. The SYSRQs did nothing. Did a hard reboot.I got two kernels in GRUB now. + the GRUB2 chainloading option. Used this one and got Code: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block It's all the same with the 2.6.32-5-686 kernel kernel panic. Using the older kernel didn't fail on the boot up, but showed many UDEV related errors and logging in was impossible - all I get were segmentation faults. Forgot to mention it - my FS is Reiserfs
View 7 Replies View RelatedI began the install, Debian 6.0, 64 I get through network config, and everything seems to check out, ifconfig, ping testing to the server it's connecting.I need to look into this further server side tomorrow, but assuming there are no network issues.is there any reason it would not connect to download mirrors? I just did an install on same rack, dell server not IBM, it went flawlessly. IBM is already putting up a fight. So, it's failing to download more content, I end up with no GUI and basic install.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install debian from a netinst cd. Everything seems to go fine except when the installer needs to connect to a mirror. It doesn't throw up an error, it just hangs a bit and then seems to keep going a lot quicker than i would expect. For example, when installing additional software, it gets stuck downloading the first few files for about 5 mins and then skips ahead and finishes the entire process in about 5 mins.
What I end up with is a very bare bones system when I fist boot into it, without any of the stuff that I had indicated that I wanted to install (ie desktop environment, web server, etc). The Internet connection works and I am able to ping websites including a number of the mirrors I tried during the install. However when using apt-get it just gets stuck trying to connect to the mirror and doesn't go any further.
The announcement of several new make scripts in the 2.6.32 release notes is very exciting.1.8. Easy local kernel configuration.Most people uses the kernel shipped by distros - and that's good. But some people like to compile their own kernels from kernel.org, or maybe they like following the Linux development and want to try it. Configuring your own kernel, however, has become a very difficult and tedious task - there're too many options, and some times userspace software will stop working if you don't enable some key option. You can use a standard distro .config file, but it takes too many time to compile all the options it enables.
To make easier the process of configuration, a new build target has been added: make localmodconfig. It runs "lsmod" to find all the modules loaded on the current running system. It will read all the Makefiles to map which CONFIG enables a module. It will read the Kconfig files to find the dependencies and selects that may be needed to support a CONFIG. Finally, it reads the .config file and removes any module "=m" that is not needed to enable the currently loaded modules. With this tool, you can strip a distro .config of all the unuseful drivers that are not needed in our machine, and it will take much less time to build the kernel. There's an additional "make localyesconfig" target, in case you don't want to use modules and/or initrds.
I'm hoping someone can help me. I upgraded my server from Lenny to Squeeze this afternoon following the release notes at http://www.debian.org I had no issues and everything is still running. I then installed Sqeeze via the Net Install disc into a virtual machine for some testing. Once the install was complete I found that apt was not working. It turned out the sources file was blank. I manually added the official repos and did an update. There were no new packages for installation.
Now, after a reboot, I get the Grub error:

I have no idea why this happened because I've not changed grub, just played around with apt. Has anybody any idea why apt had a blank sources file and grub is now failing?
Using Wicd and it keeps dropping out or telling me "bad password" when the password is in fact correct. I even know it works because the first couple of times it worked, but the connection wasn't sustained for more than a few seconds each time. My reasoning is my wireless is functional in Ubuntu, there's no reason it shouldn't be in Debian. Wireless network card is ASUS PCE-N13. Ralink driver is installed. WPA-supplicant is installed. Gnome Network Manager is also present, though I've heard that it doesn't support my particular situation.

I have a LaserJet connected to the system with a parallel to USB cable.What happens is that when I go to print, nothing happens, CUPS says the printer is processing, and the job just sits there. If I load the ehci_hcd module, then the printer is fine.But it's not as easy as setting it up so that ehci_hcd is autoloaded at boot, because if that happens then when I turn on the printer I have the same problem. I have to actually unload ehci_hcd and then reload it!

I added systemd.log_target=kmsg systemd.log_level=debug into my grub parameters.
After I do that all that I see scrolling down the page on boot are:
systemd-journald[36] /dev/kmsg buffer overrun, some messages lost
and the occasional
systemd[1] Looping too fast Throttling execution a little
Is there a way that I can boot without systemd using sysvinit?
I am trying to install Debian wheezy 7.6 stable, i made a bootable pen drive with netinst but when it arrives the select and install software part i got a error that i cant know what error is because it does not show its name. Just appear a red screen saying that a part in installation fails: Select and install software. I guess that this error is when it is installing tasksel.

After a default install of the operating system, the maximum resolution I can select is 1280 x 1024.My research so far has suggested that I need to edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and provide xorg with the necessary resolution.
Again, by default, the xorg.conf file is not created. This leads me to believe that xorg is scanning my hardware at startup and providing me with whatever it thinks is appropriate. I tried following these instructions to generate an xorg.conf file. This process created an xorg.conf file under /root/.
When I copy this xorg.conf file to /etc/X11, I get a blank (i.e. black) screen. Deleting this file restores the default resolution 1280 x 1024.This system is dual booting with Windows 7. Under windows I am able to get a 1920 x 1080 resolution, so I know my hardware is up to it.At this stage I have yet to install the drivers for the Radeon graphics card.What are my options regarding configuring xorg to give me a higher screen resolution?
