Debian :: Debian Menu Bar Not Visible

May 4, 2009

am new to this Linux world and a full time windows user. Now planning for a switch over and installed Debian into my PC as a parallel OS with windows. However, am facing the following problems after installing the os.

1. The menu bar is not visible, nor the application bar. I use Gnome and have attached a screen shot of what I see when logged in.
2. I am not able to play any movie files as it says that there are no drivers for that.
3. I do not see anything through which I can see the applications installed.
4. I am not able to access any drives of windows through this. It says access denied.
5. How do I log in as a root user?

I have used Puppy Linux before this and it was simplistic.

Debian Installation :: None Of Existing Partition Visible

Feb 14, 2011

I am trying to replace an existing ubuntu installation with the current debian testing release. But when it comes to select partitions to install on none of the existing partitions is visible. I only see my SATA hard drive empty. The existing installation of Windows is still bootable and fdisk as well as cfdisk correctly recognize the partition table while parted (which I assume is used by the installation process; all tools run from a live cd) is not:

[root@localhost liveuser]# cfdisk /dev/sda
cfdisk (util-linux-ng 2.18)
Disk Drive: /dev/sda
Size: 160041885696 bytes, 160.0 GB
Heads: 255 Sectors per Track: 63 Cylinders: 19457 .....

[root@localhost liveuser]# parted /dev/sda unit s print
Error: Can't have overlapping partitions.

I am not sure what parted's error message means. I can hardly imagine that it complains about the logical partitions with in the extended one. The reasons for the trouble might come frome the fact that sda4 is marked as primary partition (see cfdisk output). If this is the case, how can I repair this?

Debian Multimedia :: How To Disable Visible Cursor In X

Apr 18, 2015

I have a laptop running Debian stable. I have used xfce for a long time, but in an attempt to get away from needing to haul a mouse everywhere, I decided to migrate to xmonad (raw, with no DE), a tiling window manager that is extremely keyboard-friendly. I've also switched to conkeror (not konqueror, mind you), a very keyboard-friendly firefox-based browser. I have completely eliminated my need for a mouse on this laptop and have even disabled the touchpad by blacklisting the psmouse driver. There is still an annoying visible cursor sitting in the middle of the screen upon starting X. Is there anyway to (probably in the X config files) disable the visible cursor, or if not, have its default starting location be the bottom right corner (where it's least visible)?

Debian Installation :: Black Screen - No Visible Desktop

May 20, 2010

I have a problem after installing Debian and running it on my machine. Instead of taking me to a splash login screen, it instead remains a black screen like a console where I type in my username and password, and it remains in this black command line mode beginning ben@ben-desktop:~$. Like it does in a terminal. What can I do to resolve this? This is completely new to me and hasn't happened to me in Ubuntu or Mint. I am familiar with using the terminal for the odd task but obviously I can't use it like this without a visible desktop.

Debian Configuration :: Mysql Port 3306 Not Visible?

Sep 3, 2010

Everything default.Everything works nicely with one exception. I can't connect to MySQL from the network.nmapping localhost tells me 3306 is open but nmap from the outside shows only ports 22 and 111 open. To my knowledge I have no firewall, iptables -L gives an empty set.I have several similar installations on the same network without any problems of this nature.

When i access to the disk, i always have the error:

Ubuntu :: Menu Not Visible On Panel?

May 20, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 I removed the Me Menu from the panel and then put it back (right click -> Add to Panel -> Indicator Applet Session). The Me Menu came back, but my name is not on the panel. When the Me Menu came back it was just a small blank on the panel next to the Power Button. There was no name, no icon, no nothing to tell me that was the Me Menu. In fact, I only accidentally found it when I happened to click in that blank space. I checked to see if there was any sort of Preferences setting for the Me Menu so I could get it to display my name for me to click on (like it did before), but could not see a setting like that. How can I make the Me Menu to be more visible than just a blank spot on the panel?

However, if I click anywhere in left, upper portion of my desktop it becomes obvious that the application has launched and is not visible. For example, yast will not appear but clicking in that portion of my desktop causes various windows to appear that correspond to the different options in the yast home screen.

Debian :: Where's The Menu File

Aug 11, 2010

I run a minimal Lenny install, with icewm. Everything works, but I'd like to change the menu around a bit. I've spent months reading all the docs I can find, both Debian and Icewm, and Googling for other hints. But I cannot find on my computer a file whose contents correspond with what actually appears on the screen. Is there such a file? Or does the menu get sort of assembled in situ from the various bits and pieces scattered around the filing system? Looked at: /etc/X11/icewm/menu, /usr/share/icewm/menu, /home/gerry/.icewm/menu (doesn't exist), /usr/share/menu/. None of these appears to be the right one, they all have items missing, or items for non-installed programs which don't appear. I'm perplexed.
