Debian Configuration :: Lenny Won't Boot All The Way Without Monitor
Apr 16, 2010I've got Lenny installed with the desktop environment included. Remote desktop has been activated and I can see Lenny's desktop on a second computer using VNC. When I disconnect the monitor from the first PC which is running on Lenny and start that one up it won't boot all the way and I cannot connect through VNC (connection refused).
Etch has no problem with that. When I connect a monitor to the stalling Lenny I read: Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
What can I do to establish a full boot on Lenny so I can use VNC the way Etch (and other distros) allows me to? This has something to do with the autodetect system, I suppose. Could I tell X Server to ignore the fact no monitor is connected or could I fool X Server into believing there is a monitor?
Debian Configuration :: Configure The Postgresql In Lenny?
Mar 3, 2010I've been trying to configure Postgresql in Debian for some time now, in order to install a ERP program in my computer, but when trying to follow the tutorial for the program configuration I end up stalled. Basically its says this:
1) under su, start by finding the postgresql.conf file (it points the location of the file in /var/lib/postgres/data, but it isn't there) and find the line saying 'tcpip_socket' and changing it to "true"
After a little search and help, I found this file in /etc/postgresql/<version>/main/ but the mentioned line is absent, locate it or tell me where to add it in the file? I've read the file front to back and I'm pretty sure the line isn't there.This is, according to the tutorial, to enable the server to connect to a Java program through the JDBC.
2) after editing postgresql.conf, edit pg_hba.conf and add the following line to the end of the file: host all all 127.0.0.1 255.255.255.255 trust
I get stuck after this, because I'm now supposed to restart the server by using '/etc/init.d/postgresql restart', but bash replies that the path is invalid. The program I'm trying to install is hosted here: [URL]. It's a portuguese ERP program.

Feb 25, 2010I am trying to configure iODBC on Debian Lenny. When i try to test the configuration with iodbctest the following message is printed:

Both libmyodbc.so and libodbcmyS.so do exist in the correct directory. The database ldap_test is created and MySQL is running. I have not been able to find a solution to this problem by using Altavista, Google etc.

Oct 5, 2010Have a little experience with backtrack 4, which is a Ubuntu distro. I'm changing to Lenny due to hardware limitations on my laptop, an older Dell inspiron 7000.
Here's the specs :
400 MHZ,
120 G HDD parted as C: = 20G (has bad sectors, left blank) and D: = 20G Windows part
128 Mb low density RAM
ATI Rage Mobility ( not sure of video RAM, I think 8 Mb)
Now I liked running BT and liked the linux work, so when the BT install went south I started to look for another linux distro I can run, the BT tools I use are linux after all. Here's where I hit my stump. I decided to go with the Lenny distro, it already has some of the tools I need, but the first time I installed I had the HDD like this 20G, 20G, 20G,20G, 17.??G. I had windows installed on C: (of course, no problems, yet)
After I installed lenny to D: via an iso I downloaded, the Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.6 "Lenny" - Official i386 xfce+lxde-CD Binary-1, BTW first install was from booting from the disk. After reparting, format, etc. of the install, GRUB boot loader detects my D: Windows, great. Reboot to GRUB boot menu, select ddebian, and it loads...cool, until I realize I don't have synaptic, the tools, and apt isn't going to work unless I can load the linux driver from the cdrom...which I can't find.
Reboot...windows, internet for answers I'm thinkin. GRUB loads fine, select windows and get the following error message "Windows can't start because of hardware configuration problems. Could not read from selected boot disk, check boot path and hardware. Check configuration manual for disk configuration."
It took three days to get Windows reinstalled, and a LL format (zerowrite the drive) but during the process I discovered a possible hdw issue...bad sectors on the C: hdd. Solution: C: 20G = unused, D: = Windows xp. Worked great. No more windows issues, so try it again. This time I used the disks installer from windows. Everything started great, boot menuselected debian, install-graphic, but this time I let the part manager create a drive, 20G from the free space an it appropriately made it's swapfile...when lenny booted it was good, but still no synaptic, cd/rom, couldn't browse the computer.
Reboot to windows to get instructions from someone that really knows what's going on...no windows. exactly same message as before. I was able to boot into debian okay, but couldn't find any drives, utilities, wasn't very much, but I needed my windows and the internet to get lessons. I am familiar with the terminal console and KDE. Can use apt for updating, but prefer using the synaptic. Why does my windows keep disappearing? If I can solve the dual boot issue I can learn the system casually. Right now my config is: C: = 20G, nothing here, still haven't run a scandisk either...next on todo list. D: = 20G Windows install...what I'm using now. I'm not going to attempt to reinstall debian until I receive a efinate answer to the dissappearing config, or boot capacity. Oh, yeah, Did try a fdisk/mbr and fix. this didn't bring it back either.
Debian :: Grub Screen At Startup With Dual Boot Lenny And Karmic Koala
Feb 1, 2010I have a laptop with Karmic Koala in dual boot with Lenny. I need to reinstall Lenny however if I do that I will loose Karmic Koala in the grub screen because of the new version of grub that comes with Karmic Koala. Which means that I will need to reinstall Karmic Koala after Lenny so that they both appear in the grub screen at startup. If I reinstall only Lenny is it possible to use Gparted to change the boot back to Karmic Koala and have them both in the grub screen again? Or is there another way around it?

Aug 19, 2015I'm trying to set up a dual monitor system with my Dell E7450 laptop with Debian Stretch and KDE 4.14.2. The graphic card is a Intel HD5500 with xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.99.917-2. The first time I simply connected the HDMI plug, it recognized the monitor and it automagically set up the extended dual monitor. Then I unplugged the HDMI and KDE froze. Now every time I plug in the second monitor the laptop monitor goes black, the desktop goes on the external monitor and the mouse cursor moves only vertically along the leftmost edge of the monitor.

Feb 18, 2016I have been encounter 2 bugs on 2 sides of the coin. Seems it doesn't fix since Wheezy till now.
1. When I don't install any nonfree firmware I'm stuck at 1024x768 resoultions unable to turn to 1366x768
2. But when I install nonfree firmware my 1366x768 was solved but I encounter other new bugs
>> On Jessie: XFCE4.10 doesn't save any wallpaper everytime when reboot the pc & always reset to default.
But when remove nonfree firmware the bg save normally but I've to stuck at 1024x768 resulotion.
This also happen on Wheezy as well.

But when remove nonfree firmware the workspace become normal
but I've to stuck at 1024x768 resulotion once again.
So any way with nonfree installed without this XFCE bugs or without nonfree driver install but make resolution 1366x768 work for not to stuck in 1024x768 resolutions. Overall I'm quite satisfy Stretch testing than Jessie Stable.

Mar 9, 2016In Debian Jessie Gnome with two screens, I would like to execute
xrandr --output HDMI1 --primary --right-of eDP1
xrandr --output eDP1 --rotate left
prior to showing the GNOME user logon screen. Unfortunately, all information I seem to be able to find on this appears to be relevant for pre-systemd Linux only.
The situation is that I have two monitors: One small tilted monitor on the left with 1024 x 768 which should be secondary and one larger landscape monitor on the right with 1920 x 1080 which should be secondary. Everything works persistently AFTER a user has logged on. However, after booting the system or after changing users, the small monitor becomes primary so (a) the user needs to logon using that monitor and (b) as the monitor is physically tilted, one needs to tilt the head to read it wihtout the xrandr commands.
If I can get beyond this issue, there is a second issue: While one can pick the primary and secondary monitor in Gnome, monitor numbers 1 and 2 seem to be fixed. This becomes a problem when using freeRDP to connect to a Windows server with dual monitors. Then, the smaller, secondary monitor is number 1 and thus, it is the Windows logon and primary screen. Is there a way to switch numbers 1 and 2 in Linux, for example somewhere in the grub configuration?

Sep 2, 2015Just installed Debian 8, coming from Ubuntu12, it seems I cannot get my dual monitors to work as it should.
I want two monitors side by side, currently I have two identical outputs. I looked around a bit and register two possible problems.

This seems to be normal but when I installed my Ubuntu years ago it was still there and one could manually set things. There must be something new I am missing.

It seems I have both ati and radeon installed.

I have a Radeon R9 graphics card from MSI with dual DVI ports and I'm trying to get xrandr/arandr to detect my dual monitors but it only detects one. I've installed all the drivers and even installed the "amdgpu" driver from the Ubuntu repository but still not detecting. What drivers am I missing?

May 24, 2011I have an external monitor attached trough a VGA cable to my laptop PC, with the monitor settings shown below. The problem is that when I have the external display connected, video players such as VLC or MPlayer display a black screen instead of the video, with only the sounds working. If I unplug the monitor everything works fine.

Pressing left, middle and right button of mouse at top and left edges and top-left corner on the screen works correctly.
I use openbox on debian jessie. I do not install any desktop environment explicitly.
In the jessie, I installed gcc, make, libglib2.0-0, pkg-config, libcairo2-dev and libxcb1-dev.
I downloaded [URL] .... and confirmed that the sha1sum value of the downloaded file matches sha1sum value given at [URL] ....
I expanded the downloaded file by

Debian Multimedia :: Dual Monitor Setup On Intel Chipset - Netinst Minimal Install
May 14, 2010I'm trying to get dual monitors working on a fresh install of debian from the netinst install cd. I did not allow the installer to download any packages and then manually installed xorg gnome-core & gdm using apt-get.
The monitors are plugged into the onboard vga and dvi ports of my motherboard. I believe the chipset is intel.
At the moment the displays are cloned.
I don't know much about xorg.

Oct 19, 2009This is a repost of my initial problem, I need some one who knows what they are doing more than I too take a look at this command output and give some sort of direction/clue/etc on what I'm doing wrong or missing.
Is my xorg.conf missing some vital line(s) or setting?
My best guess is that i'm missing something to tell the Xserver to use both screens, as the Xorg.0.log does not talk about trying to bring up the intel display; but this is just a hunch.
I'm running kubuntu 9.04 with 2 monitors: on-board intel video and a PCI nvidia display: I am using my nvidia display fine, but still can not get my 2nd display (the intel) working. What the heck am I missing?

Jan 15, 2011just setup suse 11.3 , put on the Nvidia 19.29-22.1 drivers via yast , no kms is set in inetd , nomodeset on grub boot line etc... Even tried installing the driver " the hard way " dual monitors come up, setup xinerama to "Extend" my desktop , and the main monitor ( right side ) is good, visually the left monitor (2ndary) is good.. but whenever I move my mouse over to the left screen the mouse pointer dissapears, flickers along the right hand border of that screen... and if i move the cursor back to the original screen i have to really fight to get it back to the main screen....Copy of my xorg.conf , still very basic...

Fedora :: F14 Dual Monitor - Firefox Starts On Wrong Monitor
Jan 27, 2011I just upgrade to F14 from F10 on a dual montor setup. Firefox behaives differently on F14 than on F10.
On F10 it followed the mouse pointer's location and show up on the correct monitor
When maximized at close, it is always displayed on the left monitor. When not maximized at close it will open on the monitor where the mouse pointer is located.
About minimize/maximize Firefoxe before closing and it seems to work in some case, but not for me.

Dec 14, 2009i was trying to use gnome and kde but i don't like them. I tried xfce and it seem to fit my needs but.My computer is used to be powered on for a weeks. While time passes, a process xfdesktop begin to use more and more memory and to free RAM i need to log out and log in again.
I tried squeeze yesterday on my virtual machine and it has 4.6 and seem not to have that bug, RAM usage is static(yes it still works when i write this and have memory usage 34492k, which is not changing for an hours of usage already), also 4.6 is MUCH better than 4.4.
i already tried adding squeeze to "sources.list" but i can see too many dependencies which should be upgraded if i install 4.6, i'm beginning to afraid it can crash entire GUI(or entire system, i can see there is libc6 required to be updated).

What exactly is the fwbuilder firewall? Simply this iptables set of rules? Or the running fwbuilder script (firewall.fw)? Both?
What now? How do I see what's going on?
When i scan with nmap, it doesn't seem to matter if i have a firewall running or not. I have used firestarter till now.
Fedora :: Dual Monitor / Dual Workspace?
Apr 23, 2011I am attempting to use dual monitors in Fedora 14 using an AMD ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series graphics card (not that I think that has anything to do with anything, but who knows), and want it to where my second monitor is its own virtual workspace so that I can switch between my other workspaces on my original monitor without switching the workspace on the second monitor. This way, I can watch movies or what-not on my TV (2nd monitor) while working on my original monitor.The only thing I found that was even close was setting the 2nd monitor up on it's on x server, which I don't want to do. Also, as it is now, I have my panel on my original monitor, but the windows do not see it when I have it aligned on the right (the windows don't adjust their size to account for the fact that it is there). I know a way I can do a work-around for this, but I would like to know if there is a "correct" way to do this. I know I can tell the movie player to show on all workspaces and have it on the 2nd monitor.
