Debian Configuration :: Make MenuConfig Cannot Find Makefile
May 23, 2011
Trying to build a driver for a TV tuner card. When I enter 'make menuconfig', I get this error:
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.32-5-amd64'

make[3]: *** No rule to make target `/lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/source/scripts/basic/Makefile'. Stop.
make[2]: *** [scripts_basic] Error 2
Suspect I need another package in addition to linux-headers.
Running Squeeze, amd64, KDE.

I need to modify fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c to make my modifications. I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

I'm simply trying to compile a vanilla kernel from Kernel.org, I've done it before, however "make menuconfig" returns an error after I've made my changes to the config file.
Code:
Why is make returning that error? I am using a 64-bit kernel.

When configuring a custom kernel using fedoraproject.org instructions, the make menuconfig options for LIRC are not in the .config file anywhere. I checked the kernel tree and all the files are there in the .../drivers/input/lirc subdirectory (I need the lirc_dev and lirc_i2c drivers). I reset the .config to its original settings to make sure I didn't mess up. I also grep'ed the .config file for any LIRC related settings, none found. Also I'm not getting any sound from the radio-aztech driver.

I build and use a custom kernel, and use the nvidia driver. This is on debian stretch.
By default, I build the image and headers packages with this line:
CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=8 nice -n19 ionice -c3 fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-something --revision=1 kernel_image kernel_headers
These kernel sources are usually the sources from debian, with a couple of more patches that I add. It appears that for nvidia-driver package versions higher than 352.79-1, the kernel headers/sources need to be prepared with 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts'. It's that simple. I concluded this after the nvidia dkms build failed on my custom kernel, but then succeeded after I pointed it to the full sources, but only after running 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts' on them. The problem is that this make-kpkg scheme doesn't appear to do this, or if it does, it doesn't properly include in the headers everything that it should.

I have a package that has to configure with "make menuconfig". I want to make this automatically. Usually I save the .config-File and replace the config with a skript, but the package I have to install has no .config. The manuall told me that I have to make the following steps:./configure --with-linux...makemake installIs it possible to use the saved .config-file?

I've been trying to figure out how to use make and makefile to compile and link some .cpp/.h. All i seem to find on google says to read the README for the software. But this is my own created c++ project. Im just looking for a simple makefile for my own .cpp/.h files( about 20 total).
I have tried using 2 different makefile "examples" as a template, but neither worked. I am getting error saying "file1.cpp: no newline character at end of file". or something to that degree.

Does anyone know if it is possible to make rules in a Makefile that would work like this:
> make debug module
or
> make module debug
where module can be any module that has a specific rule in the Makefile.
The thing I have is a Makefile with different rules that I compile like this:
> make module
What I would like is to add an option so I can compile whichever module with debug-information just by adding a debug to the make command. The debug-information I know how to do, the problem is how to make the Makefile work...

I have a number of projects, say test1, test2, test3,. I want to make and install all of them in exactly the same way; so I would like to say
make test2
make install test2
with the same Makefile.
In other words, I would like to pass the argument test2 (or just 2) to the Makefile, so this is taken as the target for make or make install. This must be a common wish; but I don't see any appropriate option with "man make" on my Fedora-12 system.

I am new to Linux and I am trying to install a C program from source using Makefile. So I 've created a "hello world" program and then a Makefile to install it. Then I logged in as root and used
make install
The following error occurs:
make: execvp: /usr/bin: Permission denied
make: *** [install] Error 127
Here is the Makefile:
CC=gcc
CFLAGS=-c -Wall
PROGS = hello
INSTDIR = $(prefix)/usr/bin/
INSTMODE = 0755
INSTOWNER = root
INSTGROUP = root
all: $(PROGS)
$(PROGS): main.o
$(CC) main.o
main.o: main.c
$(CC) $(CFLAGS) main.c
install:$(PROGS)
$(INSTALL) $(INSTDIR)
$(INSTALL) $(INSTMODE) $(INSTOWNER) -o $(INSTGROUP) $(PROGS) $(INSTDIR)
clean:
rm -rf $(PROGS) *o $(PROGS)
So, where are the errors

I'm just learning to use Eclipse (have previously been a vim+make developer). I created the standard Hello World project following the tutorial. The program compiles fine, but if I build it again without cleaning the project, make aborts with a glibc double free message (pasted below). The same thing happens if I run make in the Debug directory outside eclipse. I don't know make well enough to figure out what the problem is, and to my mind Eclipse shouldn't be generating a buggy makefile anyway.
I've attached a tarfile of the project directory. Download the file and the following sequence of commands should show you the problem:
tar xvzf HelloWorld.tar.gz && cd HelloWorld/Debug && make && make
Also, if you think it would be worthwhile submitting a bugreport to the Fedora Eclipse dev team, let me know where I can do that and I'll be happy to.

I know that boot partition is possible to create within debian distribution that has grub 2.0, as I have done before with ubuntu. For some reason from a fresh installation on Debian (Squeeze), Apt is telling me I no longer need the 'make' package and I can remove it. I find this extremely odd & random given I just built this O.S. Why would Debian want to remove such a package and since this is a fresh installation, is there something I did wrong?
