Debian Configuration :: Nvidia Kernel Module With Custom Kernel
Jan 24, 2010I have a problem with my custom kernel when I want to create the Nvidia kernel module.After this finished I installed the image and headers and created the Nvidia kernel module. Everything worked fine.However, if I remove the linux-source from my home directory then I can't create the kernel module.Even though I have the headers for the kernel installed.

Boot and module loading are successful, but when X starts, I only get a black screen. I attached here my Xorg.0.log, however it doesn't seems to have any problem.

Apr 26, 2011Squeeze-beta was my first foray into Debian, and I love it. I changed my setup to a rolling setup with testing (Wheezy), and have done that for several months. Lately, I got a new kernel, but it reboots to a terminal rather than GUI (I'm a simple laptop user). I think it's because of the NVIDIA drivers, and here is what I've tried (meanwhile, I'm using the previous kernel):
# apt-get install module-assistant nvidia-kernel-common
# m-a auto-install nvidia-kernel${VERSION}-source
A blue screen appears that says:
module-assistant error message Bad luck, the kernel headers for the target kernel version could not be found and you did not specify other valid kernel headers to use.
You can try:
module-assistant prepare
or
apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.38-2-amd64
I have done both, rebooted, and I still get the blue screen. I also see this message:
nvidia-kernel-source was not built successfully, see:
/var/cache/modass/nvidia-kernel-source*buildlog*
...and I have copy/pasted the file below (which omits lines 101-200 because this message is too long then):
/usr/bin/make -f debian/rules clean

Jul 30, 2011I've posted here before (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66322) about problems arising from my attempts to get an nVidia driver to work with my custom kernel. Now those problems are all fixed, and I'm back to where I was: the built kernel boots fine, but the nVidia driver fails.
The custom kernel is as near to the stock one as I can make it, I'm just trying to find a working build process at present, before trying to build a later-version kernel.
I used sgfxi with "-! 40" to build the nVidia driver for my custom kernel; it reported that everything was fine.
With stock kernel - 2.6.32-5-amd64 ...

Debian Configuration :: New Kernel And Headers Not Allowing NVidia Driver To Install
May 19, 2010I've built a new kernel (2.6.34) on our workstation at work. It boots and runs beautifully, but there is one minor problem. I created the kernel as a Debian package along with the kernel headers. Upon installing both and attempting to build the nVidia driver for said kernel, the installer tells me that it cannot determine the version and quits. This happens even if I manually specify the path to the headers. What's going on here, did I miss something during my compilation of the new kernel?

Not only in Arch but have tried installing on other distros and still failed. I have read up all the documentations and I still find it hard to do this task. When I used the terminal and executed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-94.43.01-pkg1.run file without any window manager running, I get this problem:

Now I'm using Arch Linux Kernel 2.6.35 and I have got the source. But where am I suppose to put it now? I do not want to change the kernel. I just want the nVidia installer to identify that there is a kernel source so that it can install. I have searched up a lot on websites and ended up with no proper guide. This is a very old driver. I install linux-image-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb, linux-headers-2.6.35-6.dmz.2-liquorix-686_2.6.35-16_i386.deb and build-essential. I don't understand why the installation doesn't works.

Jul 6, 2010I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)

Jul 31, 2011I am using Squessze and Gnome. When I try to use the gui System>Administration>Network or Users and Groups I get the error The configuration could not be loaded. You are not allowed to access the system configuration.Everything was working before. I read around a bit. In some cases,it was caused by mismatching group and password files after using the gui. I do not know how to check if they are matching. Of course I do not know for sure that is the problem in my case.

Also, if I enter the command Code: Select allsudo kate I get

I tried logging in to another terminal (tty3) and entered
Code: Select allstartx
Kate opened normally with root permissions.
Currently I have a Nvidia card but I am using nouveau drivers.
My question is: installing the Nvidia drivers (following the guide in [URL] .....) would fix these Xorg issues?
I had troubles with nvidia drivers in other distros....

Jun 7, 2010I recently installed Squeeze. I had sound with the video driver that came with the install. Then I installed the Nvidia driver from Nvidia website. The sound dissappeared. When I uninstalled the Nvidia driver and removed xorg.conf and rebooted again, the sound came back. Then I installed the Nvidia driver from (nvidia-glx, dev and settings) from Debian with Synaptic. The sound went away again. If I uninstall the nvidia driver and xorg.conf the sound will probably come back again. The sound driver is the one that came with the install.
The volumes are unmuted in the alsamixer. Somehow alsaconf command does not work.
My mother board is a ASUS M4N78 Pro with Nvidia IGP.
What can I do to have sound with the nvidia driver?

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze Install - Nvidia Fan Constant?
Mar 5, 2011I installed Debian Squeeze (choosing no when prompted to add support for non-free or contrib sources) and noticed that the fan of my Nvidia 9600 GT video card is constantly running at full speed. I thought this meant that the default driver is not properly working. I would like to configure my system so that the video card fan is not being pushed so hard.
I downloaded the latest Nvidia (propietary) driver, stopped gdm3, and ran the driver installer. The installer failed because it said the Nouveau kernel driver was currently in use and incompatible with the Nvidia driver. I chose not to allow the installer to update my modprobe configuration directory. nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

It looks at though the xorg.conf.new file has the nv driver in use, but the Nvidia installer says the Nouveau driver is being used. I ran a line in terminal (i forget the exact line) to test the xorg.conf.new file in the /root/ directory. The result was No Screens Found.
Next, I tried to remove the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package using aptitude, but it displayed a message indicating that xserver-xorg-video-all depends on it. I decided not to remove the xserver-xorg-nouveau package. Any suggestions on how to proceed in order to configure X with a free driver (nv, vesa, or nouveau) so that the video card is handled properly?

I find super-image-manager(buc), but I can not install it.
