"Fel" at the end is Swedish for "Error". I can't understand what to do to correct the error. When i look in Synaptic, it seems i have both gcc 4.4 and gcc 4.3. The gcc 4.3 states latest 4.3.4-6.
I'm trying to install the nvidia drivers but it is not working.

And after that my X is not working. And when i try sudo modprobe nvidia I get this:

I have a NVidia 8400GS card for which I installed the requisite drivers by doing an update:

A few days ago, I upgraded my system from the EOL 9.04 to 10.04LTS. This did go relatively well, though the upgrade process reported some "could not update" errors for the NVIDIA drivers and at the first boot it reported it had to start in low graphics mode. I noticed that I had manually installed drivers from NVIDIA's website before the upgrade, while afterwards the hardware drivers from the package manager had been enabled. I then disabled Ubuntu's drivers, and attempted to manually reinstall NVIDIA's own drivers.
This resulted in some errors related to the install script not being able to find some vdpau related stuff. Something interesting then occured. As root everything worked flawless, but as normal user I still ended up with errors resulting Ubuntu to continue in low graphics mode. So I enabled the package managers driver again. This seemed to solve all issues for the next 5 boots. Until this morning, I again get a black screen with only a blinking "_" on the screen for quite some time, after which (nice feature) Ubuntu proposes to continue in low graphics mode.

I'm running Karmic on AMD64x2, and I have Compiz. I have been running fine, but when I run top, I see that compiz.real always takes up 100% of one of the cores of my CPU. this happens even when I change the visual effects to none in the appearance preferences. This problem starts as soon as I log in. My graphics card is an nvidia 8400gs, which is not that good, and I've installed my drivers using envy. Does anyone have any ideas about this problem?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed libvdpau and then I installed the nvidia vdpau software. I was following some steps from another post. When I run XBMC and hit 'O' I can see that the gcpu is still not doing any work (0 - 6%), the two computer cpus are doing all the work. They run at 30%'ish on 720p content and that renders smooth. No prob there. However, the cpus jump up to 50%+ (both cpus) on 1080p content and they can't keep the frame rate steady. It jumps around significantly so of course the movie stutters. No, the network is not the issue. Its completely wired gigabit end to end. Plus I'm running the video from the local hard drive and it doesn't change.
So... the solution is to get VDPAU working and so far I haven't found the right instructions.
I follow a french tutorial to install the nvidia pilots. So, i did :

I've tried to enable the drivers for a Nvidia 8400GS video card on Ubuntu 10.04. I've tried change desktop background > visual effects. It tells me Desktop effects can't be enabled. Sudo jockey-gtk looks and tells me no proprietary drivers are in use by my system. I've tried installing from Nvidia's site and that seems to go okay but doesn't seem to work. I have an internal video card that can't be turned off in BIOS )either ON or AUTO) that might be causing me problems.Lspci:Quote:

I revived my old desktop (failed psu), and installed debian squeeze using netinst. It has a nvidia geForce 7600GT card. The driver in squeeze does not work very well, so I downloaded nvidia driver-installer. When I run it, it comes back with an error saying the kernel (I assume the nvidia graphics kernel) is compiled with gcc4.3, but the system is using gcc4.4. Using synaptic manager, I installed gcc3.3, but same error.
Next I tried to uninstall gcc4.4 and it gave a warning the system might not be usable. I did not understand it, but I went ahead and uninstalled gcc4.4 and guess what, the system is not usable, and I have to re-install squeeze. Not a big loss, since I do not have much in it. How to install this nvidia driver, specifically, how do I get switch to gcc4.3 from gcc4.3? Also, the squeeze install gave me 2.6.33-trunk-amd64, and 2.6.33-3-amd64. How do I get rid of ...trunk-amd64? Do I just delete it from grub?
On a fresh installed Debian8.1 whit Mate Desktop. I start Synaptic. Lets show the Source, all empty. I can't install or remove anything. Whats happens?

So I installed it on a laptop (Downloaded the 6 DVDs). Now, how do I add some repositories to Synaptic so I can update my software? Also, is there a list of repositories? So far, every time I want to install something I need to insert one of the DVDs.

(1) Now apt-get complains about a "Held Package" and doesn't tell me the pkg name.
(2) Synaptic is broken...error..E: The value 'stable-updates' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
stable-updates isn't even in my sources list. I've purged synaptic, and re-installed but remains broken. When you close error msg synaptic disappears ? Therefore can't use synaptic at all.
(3) apt-get says many packages that were available are no longer available...like one of the main repos has disappeared ?
(4) I put the same repos that are working for my brother who is running Debian Jessie also, but didn't improve the number of missing available packages.

I'm attempting to install some software on my friend's computer. It keeps saying the packages I want aren't there but I know they are. I've been fooling around with this for a while. I may have broken something in the process. Repository names, perhaps?Is there some way to reinstall Synaptic/Aptitude and "wipe the slate clean?"

I thought it peculiar but did not know enough to interfere. When I rebooted, the system told me I must install xserver or correct GDM configuration and restart.
Have I been hacked? Am I being tested by the Linux Illuminati? Or does it have something to do with the warning message I received at the end of the update-upgrade, attached? And how do I go about reinstalling xserver? With Aptitude? I have tried running apt-get -f install, to no effect.
just installed debian squeeze KDE after years of ubuntu and suse.. For some reason, after I finally got both scrolling and tapping to work, I have a weird weird touchpad through my xorg.conf: - tapping on a tab in chrome closes the tab.
- tapping in a text field pastes txt that is in the clipboard, each successive click keeps pasting the same thing
- the left side of the touchpad is not enabled for vertical scrolling (?), and for some reason the directions are inverted (move finger up to scroll webpage down)
- when having multiple windows open, tapping that window will highlight it, but the previously selected window stays overtop of the now selected windows. Using the actual left click button the windows change normally.
When I try to install new packages I get following errors

Currently I have a Nvidia card but I am using nouveau drivers.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Squeeze. I had sound with the video driver that came with the install. Then I installed the Nvidia driver from Nvidia website. The sound dissappeared. When I uninstalled the Nvidia driver and removed xorg.conf and rebooted again, the sound came back. Then I installed the Nvidia driver from (nvidia-glx, dev and settings) from Debian with Synaptic. The sound went away again. If I uninstall the nvidia driver and xorg.conf the sound will probably come back again. The sound driver is the one that came with the install.
The volumes are unmuted in the alsamixer. Somehow alsaconf command does not work.
My mother board is a ASUS M4N78 Pro with Nvidia IGP.
What can I do to have sound with the nvidia driver?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Debian Squeeze (choosing no when prompted to add support for non-free or contrib sources) and noticed that the fan of my Nvidia 9600 GT video card is constantly running at full speed. I thought this meant that the default driver is not properly working. I would like to configure my system so that the video card fan is not being pushed so hard.
I downloaded the latest Nvidia (propietary) driver, stopped gdm3, and ran the driver installer. The installer failed because it said the Nouveau kernel driver was currently in use and incompatible with the Nvidia driver. I chose not to allow the installer to update my modprobe configuration directory. nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

It looks at though the xorg.conf.new file has the nv driver in use, but the Nvidia installer says the Nouveau driver is being used. I ran a line in terminal (i forget the exact line) to test the xorg.conf.new file in the /root/ directory. The result was No Screens Found.
Next, I tried to remove the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package using aptitude, but it displayed a message indicating that xserver-xorg-video-all depends on it. I decided not to remove the xserver-xorg-nouveau package. Any suggestions on how to proceed in order to configure X with a free driver (nv, vesa, or nouveau) so that the video card is handled properly?

Boot and module loading are successful, but when X starts, I only get a black screen. I attached here my Xorg.0.log, however it doesn't seems to have any problem.
I want to install the nvidia drivers from the repository (they seem quite updated lately). But i hit some issues:

I get plymouth and install it success, but it only support nouveau(nvidia) mode.
When I update my driver with [URL] , plymouth gone.
Is there any other way to do boot-image with the driver from [URL] ?
I find super-image-manager(buc), but I can not install it.
Addition: What is buc ?
