Debian Configuration :: USB Magnetic Stripe Reader Treated As A Second Keyboard?

Jul 26, 2011

I am new to Linux but have installed debian using the 'net method. The computer, in general, works fine. I have a USB keyboard which works OK and a Magnetic Stripe Reader which the OS thinks is another keyboard. If I open a terminal then swipe a credit card the data are transfered to the terminal screen at the cursor which I do not want.

How do I prevent the OS from grabbing the MSR? I want to use a program to address it as "/dev/hiddev0" or similar for read and write. I have tried "blacklist hiddev0" in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf but to no avail.Regarding these forums, I, for the life of me, cannot understand why a search for USB turns up empty when I can see the term in several titles on the first page of topics.

Debian Configuration :: Finger Print Reader?

Jan 22, 2010

debian unstable system i have a problem with thinkfinger. By default i should only swipe my finger and i don`t have to press enter after that. The problem is that now i have to press enter. For example in GDM if i enter my username i should swipe my finger and it should let me log in. Now after i swipe my finger nothing happenes unless i press enter. The problem may be related to the update of xorg. The same problem has been reported here: Is there anyone here who uses thinkfinger who could possibly have an idea why is this happening?I am using thinkfinger 3.0 on debian unstable with kernel 2.6.32-amd64, xorg 1.7.4, SGS Thomson Microelectronics Fingerprint Reader and GNOME. Other than the having to press enter i have no problems with thinkfinger. I am have patched thnikfinger with two patches:This patch solves the problem with thinkfinger taking too long to intialize:

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard And Mouse Or Maybe Screen - Freezes

Mar 29, 2010

So it's a beautiful day and I'll be happily using my computer when I realise that the screen is no longer showing that I'm typing or moving my mouse (or finger across a touch-pad). I can leave my computer in this frozen/crashed state for hours. My only recourse is to drain the battery or hold down the power button until the computer shuts down. The computer is a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop/notebook. As my memory serves, it has an ATI graphics thingy. Radeon 1400, maybe. But I've had the computer for years and this behaviour has emerged only the past couple of months, with seemingly increasing frequency.

The OS is
# uname -a
Linux polaris 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Jan 10 22:40:40 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
(aka Squeeze?)

Sometimes this happens within minutes of turning the computer on and logging into Gnome. Sometimes this happens only hours after I've started using the computer (mainly just surfing the web). Sometimes it is preceded by a loud boop sound and the following if I have console open, sometimes not. So maybe that's unrelated. But that happened just now so I thought I'd throw it in.

One weird thing: Usually this happens within an hour of starting to use the computer, but one occasion I noticed I had not had the problem for several hours. On that occasion, the only thing I noticed I was doing that was also unusual: I had turned on and forgotten about a kvm virtual machine. After I shut down the vm, I had about only a minute before the freeze. I'm surprised now that it hasn't frozen since I started typing thing. Maybe I should always keep this forum open in a browser window.

Debian Configuration :: Changing Keyboard Layout On Console?

Apr 9, 2010

I know there are many threads regarding this topic.I probably read most of them. At installation time I told Debian to use German keyboard layout (since I am from Germany). Now I want to switch it to American keyboard layout. In X this was no problem. But in the tty consoles I cant get it changed. It does not matter to me if it is system wide or user wide because I am the only user. (system wide would be a little bit more preferrable because it would affect the super user too, I think).I tried dpkg-reconfigure console-data
and selecting my desired layout. This changes the Layout to American until reboot

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard And Mouse Not Reacting After Boot?

Jan 22, 2011

A couple of weeks ago I installed a new 4-core Lenovo PC and installed Squeeze on it - keeping it updated every day. When kdm or gnome display the login screen, my USB-connected keyboard and mouse don't react. When I then unplug and re-attach them into the same socket everything ist fine. Surely this can't be working as intended? I can however get into BIOS-Setup as usual during the initial boot-phase by pressing Crtl-S and F1. Things also are fine when selecting the debian version to run from the multi-boot screen.

I am enclosing the kern.log of the last boot below (don't know how to attach files!). In that I can see that on line 530 ist says New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c03e (address: 5; optical Logitech mouse) and then on line 542 New USB device found, idVendor=046d, idProduct=c31c (address: 6; keyboard).
It seems to get "interesting again on line 632 etc. with the message usb 2-1.8: USB disconnect, address 6.

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard Freezes Periodically In Testing

Feb 17, 2011

I am running testing (with fluxbox) and my keyboard periodically freezes, meaning whatever I type in it doesn't respond. This lasts a few seconds (can be 2-3 or sometimes even more like 10) and one's it comes back I get all the keystrokes I was typing during the freeze. The frequency of the freezes can be like 4-5 times every hour and are very annoying. I can't seem to relate them to anything, they can occur during heavy usage but also when the box is doing absolutely nothing but waiting lazily for me to type some google search terms.

Can anybody help me track this problem down? At the moment I am using a wireless keyboard but this must be unrelated since I tested a couple of other keyboards (both wireless and wired) and the problem persists.

Debian Configuration :: 8.1 - Keyboard Doesn't Work On Resume From Suspend

Jun 19, 2015

I'm running Debian 8.1 KDE on a 2007 dv6 laptop. Model number is worn off. lol but the specs:

Intel i3 first gen m 330
4GB RAM
Intel (ironlake) graphics

First off, closing the lid to my laptop doesn't trigger suspend, or anything no matter what I set it to in power options.

I can suspend using "systemctl" or suspend from the "Leave" menu, but upon turning my computer back on, my touchpad and keyboard don't work.

Sometimes, my touchpad will start working after about 15 seconds, but the keyboard doesn't come back. I have to hard reset.

I have a feeling it's something to do with systemd, but I'm not super proficient in linux. Just an end user who is friendly with a terminal.

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard Behaving Strangely Deb Installed On Macbook?

Mar 6, 2011

Yesterday I installed Debian 6 on my Macbook, with dualboot. Everything is working fine, except for the keyboard. As I'm typing, I see the mouse arrow moving a bit and strange things happen, such as text under the arrow being highlighted or clicked.

Other things as Right-Click, selecting text and other mouse-related events also happen. Pretty much all the mouse events are randomly fired while I'm typing on the keyboard.

It's being really hard to type like this. Anyone have any ideas of what might be the cause and how I can fix this?

The Keyboard works during the Grub selection and also in recovery mode (Root Terminal), so I'm sure its not a hardware problem. Could it be that the X-Server unloads the kernel modules for those two devices? Also if I plug in a USB keyboard or mouce they are working.

Debian Configuration :: Keyboard Layout Used At Boot For Encrypted Filesystem?

Jun 28, 2011

how can I set the keyboard layout used by Debian to enter the password of my encrypted filesystem?

After my recent "aptitude upgrade", I have not been able to mount my encrypted filesystem anymore. I have discovered that the keyboard layout used to enter the password has changed. Problem is that with such layout I can't enter some of the characters composing the password. The encrypted filesystem looks intact, since I have been able to mount it and backup my files by means of a live CD. That means that I can edit any system file, if needed.

Every technique I have found to change layout cannot be employed in this case, since they rely on the system being up and running. I've tried editing /etc/default/keyboard, but that does not work.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Zebra Stripe Crashes

After having installed Ubuntu several days after its release, I have enjoyed the OS entirely except for one issue: zebra stripe crashes. When my desktop (stats are in my signature) is left idle, occasionally it will begin flashing from the blank navy blue screen (the screen saver when no screen saver is set) to zebra stripes which can be seen at the top right corner of the screen. When I attempt to move the mouse or even attempt to do remotely anything, the stripes and blank screen continue flashing regardless. I end up having to terminate my session by holding down the power button. I have installed all updates to date. How can this be stopped?

Hardware :: Access Data On Nvraid Stripe Set Using Dmraid And Loop Devices?

Mar 29, 2010

I am in one of those terrible situations...My motherboard died and I am left with a nvidia nforce raid stripe set that I need to get data off. I guess I should have setup that backup regime. Some search results have suggested that dmraid may be my white knight. I have pulled the data off each of the disks (3 of them) into image files (using ddrescue) and created loop devices (/dev/loop[1-3], using losetup).

I am running 32bit ubuntu 9.10 btw. When I do a "dmraid -ay" it tells me it found a raid set but has not activated it. When I do a "dmraid -r" it tells me I have a raid5 array on one of my /dev/sd? devices. dmraid seems to be ignoring my loop devices . Does anyone know if dmraid actually works with loop devices? If it does is there a way for me to point it directly at the devices and get it to do its auto-magic?
