Debian Configuration :: PXE Boot Server - Adding ISO Disk 1 To PXE And Win10
Feb 24, 2016
I'm trying to setup a PXE server with Jessie. I've got the basic setup working by following the steps at [URL] .... That part was really easy. I would like to make the process as automated as possible and then add Win7/10 to the system as well.
The first hurdle I've come across is the fact that netboot downloads everything off the repositories. This has the potential to use up a lot of bandwidth and I would like to avoid this if possible. The first idea I came across was to create a local mirror, this way not only will I be installing everything off the LAN but I'll also be getting all the updates for my systems off the LAN too. I wasn't too keen on this. The other option that I read about was to use the debian ISOs instead.
What I have tried is to copy the Debian ISO to /var/www/html/debian
Then, when my boot via the pxe, i set the option to manually select a repository and then i type in the IP address for my webserver for the address and type in /debian for the mirror directory.
However it breaks at this point. I get a message saying "Downloading a file failed"
I would prefer the as much of the install to come from the ISO as possible to keep bandwidth usage to a minimum.
For Win10, I read that I have to use an AIK to build the Winpe and then boot that. Then I can load the Windows10 ISO via nfs through Winpe.

I have added a 10 Mbps network card to my SGI O2 MIPS workstation running Debian Lenny running the 26-2 kernel. The workstation already has an onboard NIC which is working fine.(eth0).
lspci -v shows ths card as:-00:03.0 Ethernet controller: Compex ReadyLink 2000 (rev 0a) Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 18 I/O ports at 1800 [disabled] [size=32] Upon googling I found out that this card is an NE2000 clone. I downloaded the latest 2.6.36 kernel sources and did the following:-
1. Make Menuconfig
2. Loaded an alternate kernel config file (my working kernel config file)
3. In DeviceDrivers->Network device support->Ethernet (10 or 100 Mbit)
I selected ASIX AX88796 as the help associated with this showed it as an NE 2000 clone. configured it to be a module and did make, make_modules and make_install. Edited /etc/Modules to load ax88796 and added an alias eth1 ax88796 to this file. copied the new kernel to the /boot and did a reboot, the machine booted up fine and udev -r showed the 2.6.36 kernel and lsmod showed ax88796 loaded. But, Iam not able to bring up eth1 using:-
ifup eth1
The error messages given are:-
SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device

I'm running Redhat 5 which is running as an email server with Lotus Domino 8.5. Its a VM on ESX 3.5. The server was running out of space to so I added a new hardrive and mounted it to /domino/mail2, everything was fine for a couple of days, but then the machine became unresponsive, I couldn't even see anything on the console screen so I rebooted, it then did a file check and everything came up fine. This has now happened 2 more times over the past few days, I haven't seen any evidence that the extra disk is the problem but if I can't find anything else I will remove it and see if the problem goes away. There isn't really a consistent time it occurs.
Here's the output of the logs from the last time it happened if anybody who know more about this stuff then me ( which isn't a lot) wants to take a quick look as see if the problem is obvious or what I could be trying.

firewall server which runs on Debian and then theres windows 2003fileserver. On this machine runs as well SQL server. Letssay it listens to port 1000. From other windows machines I want to connect to this Sql server which holds library database for users. But the connection cant be made. Possible error that firewall Debian machine want let the packets through.So how to I add a rule into iptabels (what file to open and edit?) So that all localconnections to the server lets say which is 192.168.0.2 and the firefall machine is 192.168.0.1 go through! So the connections allowed would be 192.168.0.3-255. How is it safe to do and how will it look like? Sql server uses TCP/IP connection. Heres what I found from web, I think this may be the right rule, but how i modify it correctly.iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -s 0/0 --sport 1000 -d 192.168.0.2 --dport .........? -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

I just installed Debian 6 squeeze on a P3, 632 MB RAM, 20 GB HD, and am trying to get it on-line. Ran lspci and lsusb on it (advice from another forum). Got the following results:
[Code]....
Exactly what I am trying to do: Existing network is as follows: Comcast internet to cable modem to Belkin N Wireless Router Model F5D 8236-4 v3. That router is wired to one desktop (running Windows XP)and has 4 wifi notebooks (two running Windows 7 and two running Mint 9 Isadora) and two Wii consoles running off of it. I am seeking to add another desktop to the network in another room without having to drill some holes and run about 40 feet of cable. Seems like it shouldn't take much to get the two routers to "talk" to each other so I can do this. The router I am trying to hook to it is either a Belkin F5D 9230-4 wireless router or a NetGear N150 WNR1000 v2 Wireless router.

I am currently running a Debian 4.0 (etch) PC and I can't upgrade to a newer distribution for legacy software reasons.
It is currently running on Kernel 2.6.18-4-686 and I would like to upgrade it to Kernel 2.6.22-3-686 (whilst keeping my current Debian 4.0 Etch installation). Does anyone know how this could be possible?
Prefereably I would like to instal Kernel 2.6.22-3-686 along side my current Kernel 2.6.18-4-686 with the option to specify which kernel to use when booting.

I'm building a Debian based router, I want to add to this router a mail service function. I don't want mail to be sent outside of the network, what I want is the ability for services to send mail to the Debian server and for me to then pick them up from this server via pop3 into my normal mail application. Given I'm not looking for mail to be sent outside of the network and its strictly for services to log notifications via. What of the various mail applications should I setup? i.e. just looking for SMTP + POP3 internally.

I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.
I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.
I will update the topic later..
My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.

I'm very new to linux and running debian 4.0. On boot got an error:
I did a ghost image of drive before I do any more damage and when performing the ghost, ghost stated I need to run fsck. I created the image and noticed that a lot of folders were missing (bin, boot and others).
1. How do I run check disk from an boot disk?
2. Is there something else I should consider?

I've just installed debian to a thumb drive on a system with no hard drives. I did not install any hard drive to avoid confusion. The installation went well, I rebooted the system several times with no issues until I decided to install the hard drive (SATA drive). After I installed the hard drive the system failed to boot showing something like:
Code:
Decompressing Linux... Parsing ELF... done.
Booting the kernel.
Loading, please wait...
mount: mounting /dev/sda1 on /root failed: No such device
(continues for other partitions and mount points)
Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init
No init found. Try passing init=bootarg
BusyBox v1.10.2 (Debian 1:1.10.2-2) built-in shell (ash)
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs) [9.670347] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through [9.673805] sd 0:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
(some insignificant text was not copied :P)
I am guessing that the new disk is somehow confusing debian regarding where to look for system files or the address where the devices are located because if I remove the data cable from the hard drive the system reboots correctly (no hard drive though). Hotpluging the drive works but once I reboot it happens again.

How can I load packages from the cd? I installed from cd1 which I burned on a desktop, then installed Lenny onto a laptop. Works great, no problems except I have no way of connecting the laptop other than wireless.
I've found the network manager package on the cd, but don't have a clue how to install it. I really need to get the wireless working so I can install package manager, wi-fi radar and some other things. I tried putting the disk back in and thought rescue mode might bring me back to where I could select the individual packages I need, but that didn't work, it just wanted to go through another install. Thought there was a way to select individual packages and add them to the installation.

(has worked in ubuntu 10.10)I can hibernate, but when I switch on the system cold boots (it does not restore previous session).Note suspend works fine. Have looked in /var/log/pm-suspend.log Shows for each block of suspend suspend a block of resume suspend, but hibernate hibernate is not followed by resume hibernate ( I assume that is what is expected.)

We had a server failure this morning because grub was throwing error 15 (file not found). We discovered that the disk had changed names from hd0,0 to hd1,0. Making the appropriate replacements in menu.lst fixed the problem, but I'm still wondering what could have caused the spontaneous name change.
here are some other possibly related tidbits: * the server had been down because of a power loss, but it is behind a UPS so i doubt there is any electrical damage * eth0 also temporarily failed but the system failed over to eth1
My current theory is that when the bios was configuring the hardware the loss of eth0 shuffled around the addresses of the remaining hardware on the pci bus, which somehow caused the hd0/hd1 confusion. The problem is that everything i've read [URL] says that the drive assignment should be based on the way the disk is connected to the motherboard (which in this case didn't change)

I've bought a new notebook. The hard drive won't stop spinning down and then spinning up again during load. I don't want HD power saving, so I disabled it within
1. /etc/hdparm.conf
Code: Select all# -B apm setting
apm = 255
# -B apm setting when on battery
apm_battery = 255
It didn't work. I can still hear the HD spin up. It's annoying in a video game because things just suddenly stop for a second.
2. /etc/udev/rules.d/50-hdparm.rules
Code: Select allACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="sda", RUN+="/usr/bin/hdparm -B 255 -S 0 /dev/sda"
This was also every tip I could find during RTFM.

AMD A8-6410 APU
4 GB RAM
AMD Radeon R5 2 GB VRAM

How can i get a RAID virtual image disk?
What i need is to mount several directories from any other partiton (or file system) as a new merge file system that can grow or decrease depending on the free space. As if it was a dinamic RAID,so i can work with huge files distributed over the partitions mounted.
Ejemp: /mnt/sda1/dir_raid1 + /home/dir_raid2 + /mnt/sda3/dir_raid3 ---> /mnt/RAID/
mhddfs and unionfs <---- are not the solution im searching (cant use huge files)

I seem to have a major discrepancy between what df reports and what du reports. df tells me that I am using 20G, but I am only able to find 9.5G using du. What follows are the ls -l of root, a df of my system, and the du for every directory in root that is not a symbolic link, mnt, or proc. I would appreciate any suggestions on where to look for the remaining 10.5G that seems to have disappeared.

concerning Linux, mdadm, and creating RAID Array's in Debian. I've done a lot of reading and research on RAID both on this board and elsewhere (The Linux Documentation Project's Software-RAID HOWTO is especially good), but I've run across something that no one seems to explain, and I'm not sure why. I'm instructed to create partitions on the drives I wish to add to my array. These partitions inevitably take up the whole disk, and are always have their system IDs set to "Linux raid autodetect". What I don't understand is why, after creating these partitions, some guides then go on to create an array (say a RAID5 one) with just the disks themselves as members, while others go on to create the RAID5 array with the previously created partitions as members. E.g.,
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd
vs.
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1
What's the advantage of using one over the other?

I have some general question with with quite an impact for the system I use I have a media server with 2 raid1 mirrors of 2 1 To disk aggregated with lvm and used by a big 2 To ext3 partition.A few days ago, munin (awesome!) started to send me notifications about smart attributes of some disks. Fyi, here's my hdparm.conf:
/dev/sda {
spindown_time = 54
}
/dev/sdb {
[code]...
regarding reliability and disk longevity, is it recommended to have them spin down while not used (most of the day, as these are storage unit for movies, pictures, documents..) or let them spin whatever.. ? Those are WD green and according to Tom' Hardware, the consumption is only slightly greater in idle compared to standby. The other question, (boat one as we say in french ) what is the best configuration here ? My 2 raid 1 stripes, or a raid 5 ? I know that two disks kill the raid 5, and they have to be of the same stripe to kill the lvm on the raid1, but what are the odds ?
