as far as i know Debian "Squeeze" has a disk check utility, but you can't run this on a mounted filesystem. Is there a way to trigger this during boot (before filesystem is mounted) ? I can run this once a month to keep filesystem healthy....

How can I set systemd to do a filesystem check only once every a set number of mounts, like I had set up before the upgrade?

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?
I am using Gnome and Squeeze. I am wondering if I have a problem of understanding, or a problem that I found with Gnome.
My configuration is with a 3 hard disk system.
disk1 (Debian)
disk2 (XP and Fedora)
Disk3 (W7 and a Data partition)
When I boot and log in, all partitions for disk2 and disk3 are mounted read-write. Only by going to command line am I able to unmount the drives with the following sequence
cd /media
umount *
umount *
I should be able to mount and umount a drive by providing or responding to a root password. But I am not given the option to present a password. My request is blocked.
I also do not want to see the drives remounted after a boot. I tried to find out how this was managed, but I was unable to discover the module and it's parameter list that controls or does this task.
I am trying to figure out where the harddisk power management can be found in Squeeze. Before it was in the scripts under /etc/acpi, but in Squeeze it's not. I'd like to be able to change the hdparm -B value from 128 to 200 when using battery.

I did a ghost image of drive before I do any more damage and when performing the ghost, ghost stated I need to run fsck. I created the image and noticed that a lot of folders were missing (bin, boot and others).
1. How do I run check disk from an boot disk?
2. Is there something else I should consider?
I have two partitions in LVM. They are added in /etc/fstab to mount automatically. But, they are not working. The process to mount partitions seems to be happening before the service /etc/init.d/lvm2 is started. I can get it mounted using "mount -a" command, but not during the boot time. What should I do get it automatically mounted on every boot?

how can I set the keyboard layout used by Debian to enter the password of my encrypted filesystem?
After my recent "aptitude upgrade", I have not been able to mount my encrypted filesystem anymore. I have discovered that the keyboard layout used to enter the password has changed. Problem is that with such layout I can't enter some of the characters composing the password. The encrypted filesystem looks intact, since I have been able to mount it and backup my files by means of a live CD. That means that I can edit any system file, if needed.
Every technique I have found to change layout cannot be employed in this case, since they rely on the system being up and running. I've tried editing /etc/default/keyboard, but that does not work.
Before I ask I know what I'm asking is not recommended.
On Lenny It was possible to change the boot login to permit logins as root
I can't find how to do that since I installed Squeeze.
I've installed 6.0.1a on my xi3 box [URL] and it works great. However when I remove the monitor and keyboard it doesn't boot (I don't know how far it gets, there is no monitor...). I did not install, and do not want, any kind of GUI interface, command line only. This is going in a closet as a solid state rsync backup repo. I have another small system (not this exact one) running Lenny that runs just fine headless - is this some kind of Squeeze regression? Is there any way I can get this running headless (I can't run Lenny on this box because I don't think the Marvell GbE driver is there or is working in Lenny.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've got a fresh install of Squeeze on a 32bit host and I have been unable to boot into XEN/dom0.The Xen Kernel is "linux-image-2.6.32-5-xen-686" (pvops) and Hypervisor is xen-hypervisor-4.0-i386.The system default installed with grub2.It boots quite happily in normal mode, using the above Kernel, but just reboots itself if I try run it as Xen/dom0. (reboots within a second of pressing <enter> ... there is no messages displayed on the screen that I have noticed)The relevant menu (generated by /etc/grub.d/20_linux_xen) entry for running Xen is as below;

I've run into an issue that I'm not sure how to address. I'm running Squeeze and upgraded my system this morning.
The packages upgraded were:
About 10 seconds after upgrading, the system froze completely and I had to do a hard restart. The system froze again 10 seconds after the bash login prompt was displayed (I'm not using a display manager) after reboot. The source of the problem appears to be my Realtek 8192SE wireless driver. I was able to boot the kernel in recovery mode and uninstall it, which has fixed the issue. Rebuilding the driver causes the problem again.
I suspect that something to do with the sysv and init packages affected the driver in this way, but I've no idea where to start in trying to fix this. I can't imagine this is a fault of the Realtek driver as it worked just fine up until this point.
Squeeeze is now frozen.Lenny has Ext3 as default filesystem and that's fine.But I am unsure if the Ext4 or btrfs is the best - and why.What's the best? Ext4 or btrfs?

In Linux Mint pressing <Esc> cancelled the check; however in Fedora this does not work (nor does Ctrl+C nor anything other I've tried). What is the key to cancel the check in Fedora?
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a PXE server with Jessie. I've got the basic setup working by following the steps at [URL] .... That part was really easy. I would like to make the process as automated as possible and then add Win7/10 to the system as well.
The first hurdle I've come across is the fact that netboot downloads everything off the repositories. This has the potential to use up a lot of bandwidth and I would like to avoid this if possible. The first idea I came across was to create a local mirror, this way not only will I be installing everything off the LAN but I'll also be getting all the updates for my systems off the LAN too. I wasn't too keen on this. The other option that I read about was to use the debian ISOs instead.
What I have tried is to copy the Debian ISO to /var/www/html/debian
Then, when my boot via the pxe, i set the option to manually select a repository and then i type in the IP address for my webserver for the address and type in /debian for the mirror directory.
However it breaks at this point. I get a message saying "Downloading a file failed"
I would prefer the as much of the install to come from the ISO as possible to keep bandwidth usage to a minimum.
For Win10, I read that I have to use an AIK to build the Winpe and then boot that. Then I can load the Windows10 ISO via nfs through Winpe.

I've had a look at some similar threads but as I'm very new to linux they're already a bit technical for me. Sorry, this calls for someone with patience. I gather from other threads that disconnecting an external drive without unmounting is a no-no, and this seems to be the likely cause. Now the disk is read only and I'm unable to change any settings through the usual control panel on ubuntu. I'm just not familiar with the terminal instructions. I tried to cut and past a few command lines from other threads but I got some warnings that proceding could damage data. Like this one: WARNING! View 5 Replies View Relatedyou can refer to this ubuntu thread for context, but i'll sum up what i'm trying to do here to spare the reading. basically i want to be able to schedule a filesystem check with automatic repairs at the next boot time. but i'm not sure if this will try to automatically fix errors which is what i want to do. the reason i want to do this is because i experienced a power outage (the machine was not plugged into an UPS) and i want to make sure everything is ok.

I currently have ext4 and I have nothing to complain about. In fact, my overall experience has been very positive. Ext4 is definitely faster when fsck runs during boot.
What would be the cons of having ext4 as default in Squeeze?

It all seems to work, however debuild gave an error about secret keys. Is this a sensible procedure? What happens in the (probably unlikely) event there is another source patch?I've gone to a tiling window manager as the result of the purchase of a wide screen LCD monitor. I like to have some stuff down the right hand side when running Firefox and OpenOffice in the main panes. Any configuration tricks welcome. Modern screens are the wrong shape!
Hardware at issue is an nVidia GeForce 9600 GT. Issue occurs regardless whether the driver is downloaded and installed from nVidia, or installed via Synaptic courtesy of the new dkms package in the repositories.
It should also be noted that the issue only arose after an update today, as follows:
I do not believe it is related to the last three items in that list. Because everything worked perfectly before todays update, it would appear that one of those other updates is causing KDM and nVidia to not want to co-operate with each other.I also notice that, new to the boot sequence, the system is booting with "concurrency" - never seen that scroll by before - which may have something to do with it too.
OK, what happens. KDM "fails" to start when booting the computer. Symptoms : At the appropriate spot in the boot sequence, the screen goes black (as usual), but then, instead of the cycling cursor followed by the logon screen, the nVidia logo appears, and after about 7 or 8 seconds, the screen goes black for about a second, then drops me back at the console. From there, I can log in as root.
Now, the thing is, KDM is actually running, but using <control> <alt> <F7> only brings me to a blank black screen. By issuing the command /etc/init.d/kdm restart, I come up to a normal logon and can proceed as usual. As well, if I delete xorg.conf, system boots OK.
Looking at the system log, we find :

Should mention that was using the latest stable driver from nVidia (195.36.24), but in the hope that maybe something in the latest beta may solve the issue, installed that, but the answer is nope And yes, completely uninstalled the nVidia drivers between each test of the nVidia driver, the same driver in the repositories and the latest beta driver, before anyone mentions.
I did the "yum update" today, the process was doing well but, the follow error appears:

I have a set of vm's with stable, testing, and sid to keep track of how things are going. When I did an apt-get dist-upgrade with squeeze last week, things seemed to OK (350 package updates) until the end. It didn't seem to like and / or was confused by a kernel dependency.
I am not too concerned yet. Because these are in vm's, I do a snapshot before any significant change. I can futz around with impunity because I have that backup.
I re-booted, and tried the apt-get dist-upgrade again with same results. I think I also tried apt-get -f install.
So I reverted to the snapshot, and will simply try again in the future. I recall that with lenny as testing, the font-desktop was really screwed up for about a period of 6 weeks.
However, just in case someone else runs into this:
1) a re-boot worked, but the failure of apt-get made me nervous enough to revert.
2) waiting for corrections has seemed to work in the past (with a single exception with a 4-disk SCSI software RAID10 update that failed to re-boot lenny successfully after what seemed to be a minor update -- that was on a real system, not a vm. I haven't gotten back to look at that.)
I recently just installed Squeeze on an ia64 system and was having some troubles with running VNC.I get the following error, more specifically for some reason I get a malloc - memory corruption error:

After display all the code above, it just stops. The port 5901 is still closed - if it runs properly, would it open automatically?Is there something that is incompatible? Or am I missing some system configuration component?
I would like to resize the /home partition but it is mounted and when umount is run, it errors with 'busy'.
System Configuration:
I installed jessie on a laptop with one SSD. I used guided partitioning and selected the whole drive with multiple partitions. The /home now takes up 420 GB. I would like to reduce that to 20 GB to make room for another partition.
What are the methods reduce this partition?
How to run a fsck on a mounted drive? I attempted unmount and it said no. I suddenly got an error 4 and trying to run a check, and it aborts with can't cause mounted.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have updated from Karmic to Lucid not long ago, and everything went smooth and my system is been working like a charm for about a month. And it still does, with the only issue being that every time I restart my system, one of my partitions is checked.
My disk is split into 4 partitions:
sda1, NTFS for windows
sda2, ext4 for "/"
sda3, ext2 for /home
sda4, swap
Now what seems to happen is that sda3 is being marked as "not clean" on every shutdown, which makes me assume that is not being umounted at all.
I've been reading logs, commenting network drives out on fstab.. nothing does the trick.
I've booted into single mode and run e2fsck (which doesn't find anything wrong, and marks the FS as "clean") and then rebooted. The result is: if the FS wasn't mounted when I restart, then I get a clean boot once, but it is checked on the following one; if it was mounted then it is again checked at start-up.
Again, all points to the problem being that the FS is not cleanly umounted on shut-down.
I could not find any log with info of the processes killed and FS umounted at shut-down, so if anybody knows where to look, it could be a good start.
Found this 'Startup Disk Creator' in Ubuntu,it is useful,how we get it install in Debian Squeeze? There's a Unetbootin for Debian,but it pull in lots of qt stuff,I don't like it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm not sure if this is a bug in Squeeze beta 2 or if it's something I've overlooked. I have a Maxtor 250 GB external USB drive that I use for backups. It gets auto-mounted fine, always in the same place, and from my normal user account I can write to it, even delete directories on it if I want to. But when, from Gnome, I select the "Safely remove" option, I get an error to the effect that it can't stop the device. The weird thing is that the thing actually *is* unmounted. I've checked the mount point and it's no longer there.Is there some package I maybe should've installed but haven't? I'm not really worried about data loss, since I'm sure the drive wouldn't unmount unless it was properly synched; it's just the error message that bugs me.

When the disk checks happening I press escape and it usually says its deleted inode something because it has zero Dtime or some thing similar and also a paragraph of repeated lines saying something like all system files need alsa base.cnfg it will be ignored in a future release then the disk check completes and it restarts and is fine then, also sometimes it says dev/sda5 (my ubuntu partition) was not cleanly unmounted check forces. Is their a way to stop this happening as it ends up taking ages just to login.
