Please Note: I use sudo, you may have to use root or 'su' from the command line. If you don't know the difference between sudo and su, then you shouldn't try this until you know. At the time I did this, the lastest dropbox version was 0.6.7.

Debian Configuration :: Ifconfig Wasn't Displaying The Same Information That Resides In /etc/network/interfaces File

Aug 14, 2011

i recently started sockets programming. In the process i began to look for relevant network information about my computer and realized that ifconfig wasn't displaying the same information that resides in my /etc/network/interfaces file. On the interfaces file my IP address is 192.168.1.109 for interface eth0 but ifconfig displays 192.168.1.101. I was under the impression that ifconfig got its information from the interfaces file but clearly doesn't. I tried re configuring the device with ifconfig and then disabling and re enabling the device with ifdown and ifup so that the device updated its information but it didn't.

Debian Configuration :: Make Init.d Script That Asks For User Input?

Jul 30, 2011

I'm trying to make a script that loads at boot and asks for user input before doing it's stuff. So I created a script in /etc/init.d/ following the example given there (skeleton file) and used update-rc.d to make it load before GDM.

But when my script requests user input, init doesn't stop, and goes on loading other services and loads GDM. I have to CTRL+F1 to get to my script. I want my script to pause the init system till it ends doing it's stuff and the the other services can go on loading.

I tried
#X-interactive: true to no avail.

Debian Configuration :: Keeping The Dns Server Running With Current Server Information?

Jun 26, 2010

I'm running the current release of Debian with the 2.6.26-2 kernel. This is an upgrade from an older (2.4 kernel) series redhat release. One of the things I had working in the older system was a dns server with accompanying monthly update of the root hints file. I tried working through a dns how-to to set this up again, but it seems much has moved around since I last played with this. All of the files listed in the how-to are not where it says they should be. I am looking for a better reference on keeping the dns server running with current server information.

Ubuntu Installation :: Security Updates Clobber Configuration Information?

Jan 13, 2010

Why can't Ubuntu store configuration information in a way that it wouldn't need to be clobbered in order to apply security updates? For example, this mornings updates told me I had to choose between using a new version of smb.conf that's part of the security patches, stick with the old version, or let the update installer merge them. Of course, the first two choices have obvious drawbacks: why should I have to choose between losing all my SMB settings or refusing security fixes? So I chose the merge, which came back with "Conflicts found during three-way merge! edit `/etc/samba/smb.conf' and sort them out manually."

Red Hat / Fedora :: "Reload" Old Repository Information And Configuration ?

Jun 26, 2010

I have been having trouble installing some programs because of some dependency resolution errors. Sometimes I can work around it, and sometimes I can't.

The problem is that it looks for a package named in a different way or something.

Currently, I'm having problems installing "evolution-data-server" from source. It gives an error during configuring that says "libdb" can't be found, but I do know I have it installed.

I'm giving "reseting the repos" a shot because this might solve everything else. Basically, what I want to happen is that the package manager, and the repository list, would be back to "normal", the state where it's as if I just installed F13.

Here are screenshots of my repo list

It's tiring sorting out dependencies manually. Plus, there are no guarantees that I can have a successful installation.
