Debian :: Many Package Uninstalled - Can't Seem To Upgrade To A Higher Kernal
Dec 27, 2010
I was attempting to install CRYPT-SSLEAY for perl. at the end of the installation many packages were auto uninstalled including aptitude & perlmagick ( both i need ) I think the system is tell me I need to upgrade the kernel but all my sources.list seem to be bad.
then I received this message:
Code:
The installation of a 2.6 kernel _could_ ask you to install a new libc
first, this is NOT a bug, and should *NOT* be reported. In that case,
please add etch sources to your /etc/apt/sources.list and run:
apt-get install -t etch linux-image-2.6
Then reboot into this new kernel, and proceed with your upgrade
Using Lubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled Apache Server (it was once installed). But the update manager is cites many new Apache updates that I need. But again Apache is not installed anymore. Synaptic says it's not installed. I have a checker for orphaned packages it says nothing about Apache. Why does the updater say this? Maybe there's a "residue" of Apache somewhere?
Go ahead a laugh but then please help me out. I want to take a look at the line by line of a package before I install it. I've downloaded it and here it sits. I tried "open with" "Geany" and got a Geany "new doc" page with nothing on it as a result. I thought an editor was what one used for this sort of thing. Again I want to see what is in it before I install it. I ran a search for "pkg edit" here on the forum net and got more than 17,000 hits. I can't wade through all of that or I'll go nuts. Manuals say something like "use editor" etc.... Nice but how do I "use editor" on an uninstalled pkg.
I installed Slackware 8.1 thinking that it was the earliest version to support flash drives (based on some forum discussions I had read), but then discovered Wiki info on flash drives which states that the 2.6.2 kernal is the first kernal to support them. Is it possible to load 2.6.2 into Slackware 8.1 or does this following link the highest kernal I can go with 8.1? [URL]
Last week I could burn dvd's and cd's and had no problem. I did the latest kernal upgrade for Ubuntu 10.04 yesterday and today I cannot get K3B or Brasero to recognize any type of medium weather blank or filled. Looked on the forum and there appears a bug in the kernal. Is there a workaround? If so how do I use it.
I'm a bit new to installing/upgrading on Linux/Centos so apologies if I've made a basic mistake here.I've searched around for the answer to this question but not found it - but apologies if this has been discussed in the forum before. The issue is that I want to upgrade Apache to version 2.2.12 or higher, because I want to install a second SSL domain on the same IP address. According to this page [URL].. you can do that from version 2.2.12.
Incidentally I've got Centos 5.4 installed. So I've had a little browse around with yum and did a "yum list *httpd* with gave me the following
Im fairly new with Linux (Puppy and Mint) and have only been working with Debian for 24 hours. I have come across the errors shown in the attached screen shots.
If I install (say) Iceweasel from Lenny Backports, do I need to un-install the standard Lenny Iceweasel first, or will the new one overwrite/upgrade the old one? And- I understand pinning I think, but nobody explains what the * in the line:Package: * means. Does it mean all packages installed from the release specified in the line Pin: release a=lenny-backportsor do I need to specify each package in it's own entry (in /etc/apt/preferences)?
A server of mine previously running ubuntu 9.10 used to be between 0.01 and 0.10 load average during the normal load of users using various server programs on it (mostly apache with php scripts).
Now, after upgrading to 10.04 (which went smoothly for the most part), the load average is much greater under the same user workload, hovering between 0.1 and 0.3 under very light work and up to and over 1 regularly when more users are accessing the same scripts.
Are there any known issues that would cause greater usage of the same resources in lucid, or are there any ways I can trace what's causing the higher load? Downgrading or starting with a fresh install are last resorts, as there are a lot of customized options specifically set up for this server and I'd rather not go through backing them all up and restoring them after a complete wipe.
I am trying to upgrade a Debian 4 server to v5 with the instructions from document. However, I am having trouble with getting an installed package upgraded to the latest version for the current release (see error below). And I am afraid to upgrade the distribution if I can't get this package to upgrade. One thing I did notice in the error was, "Aborting downgrade from (at least) 5.1 to 5.0". The dpkg --get-selections command showed that both MySQL 5.0 and 5.1 were installed (I don't know how or why, as I was not the one to setup this server), but 5.0 was the one running. So I've since uninstalled v5.1 but that error still shows up when I try to do an apt-install upgrade. I don't know that this is what is causing the package upgrade to fail but I thought it worth mentioning.
I am in process of installing a VMware tools PKg and am being asked for the path to the C headers for the kernel. I've browsed every folder, found lots of 'C' header files and tried these paths but none are being taken by the script. which path I need to provide for 'the C headers' for my kernel? running Piapix, Deb5. The os is running perfectly so I doubt there is error other than I am not 'wise' enough to locate these little buggers!
I have downloaded a Non-free Deb pkg, when I tried to install it using "# dpkg -i pkgname", it appeared to install as expected. The pkg exists, I found the new directory and the executable file, but if I try to run it I get kicked out of my session, and back to GDM.
When I run "# dpkg -l pkgname", immediately after the install, I get this: "un pkgname <none> (no description available)"
Since it is not installed I can not remove it, or reconfigure it.
I run Debian Testing with Openbox as my window manager.
I'm running Debian squeeze and my packages are all up to date. I usually do my updates by typing 'aptitude update' and 'aptitude safe-upgrade' at the command line as root.Sometimes when doing regular updates aptitude, or the package that's being updated, shows a ncurses-style dialog box on the screen, usually to have the user 'OK' a change, or to select which version of a configuration file to keep. Recently I've found these dialog boxes to be slightly messed up... in that the spot at the bottom where I would expect the 'OK' button to be is replaced by nonsensical characters.
There seems to be no problem with the way that the program functions, as I can press the tab key and then the return key, or just the return key alone, and the dialog goes away, seemingly doing it's job. But I would like to know what this program is. It's likely been updated recently, but looking through /var/log/aptitude and /var/log/aptitude.1.gz I cannot figure out which one it is. I'd like to file a bug report, or simply be able to follow the progress of someone else's bug. That's all.
So I had decided to install debian but I thought I couls do it by myself without anything which I was wrong about, because I wound up installing Debian on my C: drive/windows partition. So far nothing has been bad and I am still running windows but now my C: drive has been renamed to "Install Debian GNU/Linux" I know the name doesn't mean shit but I'm curious why every time I go to change it it auto changes back. Also now every time it boots up it asks me to choose between UNetbootin, which i uninstalled, and windows. how do i get rid of the option to remove unetbootin even though I uninstalled the program. Same with Debian I deleted everything i could find but it still changes the drive name, how to fix any of this and might there be files I haven't found where would they be located?
I use Jessie, with the Aptitude curses interface for package management. It seems that every time I successfully uninstall/purge a package (along with its dependencies), then the next time I try to install/uninstall anything else it wants to reinstall that package (and its dependencies). It takes several (I haven't counted) "don't install" instructions from me before it will forget about it.
My computer boots up, grub loads up, but I enter tty1 instead of the desktop environment.
I am using Debain GNU/Linux 7.0 (wheezy).
My mother board is an ASUS M4A88T-M.
Former graphics card was a Radeon, bought within the past couple years, pretty high specs. (I am having trouble determining what the card is right now, I'll update my post when I figure it out).
I remember having to mess around with some config files to get it to work at first, but right now how to 'unfix' it now.
I installed Debian 8 Jessie with the GNOME 3 desktop environment and I couldn't get pass the login screen after several reboots. Since I read that NVIDIA graphics are problematic, I decided to reinstall the system but selected Mate desktop, which appears to be less graphic intensive than GNOME 3. It worked. However, I can't get a higher resolution than 1024x768 (In Windows I could). The Mate settings in the "System → Preferences → Monitors" does not show higher resolutions.
Before I try to install proprietary drivers as instructed in [URL] ...., I'd like to see if there's anything to try first with the default stuff installed by the system, because that page says:
As of jessie, the need for the proprietary drivers is pretty much over - nouveau now works quite well and works with dual-headed displays by simple and easy configuring from within your desktop(for KDE see System_Settings/Hardware/Display_and_Monitor/Display_Configuration) . The proprietary drivers don't provide normal logging and can be a hidden source of problems.
I recently got a new external monitor for my laptop, and connected them by VGA. This is what 'xrandr' tells me:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 4096 x 4096 LVDS1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1280x800 60.0 + 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 56.2 640x480 59.9 VGA1 connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 510mm x 290mm 1920x1080 60.0 + 1600x1200 60.0 1680x1050 60.0 1280x1024 75.0 60.0 1440x900 75.0 59.9* 1280x960 60.0 1280x800 59.8 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0 832x624 74.6 800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x480 72.8 75.0 66.7 60.0 720x400 70.1
However when I try to change to some of the higher resolutions, such as 1920x1080, all I get is a corrupted and flickering image. As indicated above, I am currently on 1440x900@59.9h,z but for some reason 1440x900@75hz doesn't work. The same seems to be true for 1280x1024. The three resolutions above that all cannot be selected properly. I tried setting the resolution to maximum in Windows XP and it worked, and my video games console can set it to 1080p, so I don't think there is anything wrong with the monitor. Is there anything I can do or is this some kind of bug or limitation of the graphics driver or something? The graphics chipset of the laptop is an Intel 945GM, which I believe should be capable of displaying 1920x1080. I am running debian unstable with what seems to be the most up to date version of xserver-xorg-video-intel.
I think I need to upgrade my libfaac libraries due to some problems I am having with ffmpeg (the libraries are in the package 'libfaac0'). However, it won't install it because my version of libc6 is really out of date, supposedly (but it is actually the most up-to-date version).Do I need to manually upgrade libc6 or is something else messed up? I don't want to do anything that would put me at risk of screwing up a lot of dependencies.
I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?
when I try to install a package, I've the message The following packages have unmet dependencies:package-xy: Depends:lib-something (>= version_number) which is a virtual package.
If I install XFCE with "yum groupinstall XFCE", then someone adds a package to XFCE at a later date, "yum upgrade" will not add the new package as it need to already be installed for "upgrade" to work.if I issue "yum groupupdate XFCE", will yum catch the new package in XFCE?
