Debian :: Apps Shut Down Mysteriously ?

Apr 23, 2009

Running Lenny in my plain vanilla x86 box since Lenny went final. No video card. System is completely up to date with the 26-2 kernel. All apps are Deb stable from repos.

chkrootkit, rkhunter, and clamav have all been run within the last 24 hours (clean). Firestarter is the firewall.

I left the box with about 10 apps running over all 4 virtual desktops (KDE). Came back in a couple of hours to find all apps closed except Gkrellm. Boinc, which had been dormant for lack of work, had gotten some jobs and was running in background. All apps reopened normally except Iceweasel did show the "closed unexpectedly" notification. I don't use a screensaver.

System did not shutdown and auto reboot. Uptime clock and syslog had chugged along right through it. Syslog seemed normal except for the exerpts below that looked curious to me.

Ubuntu :: Desktop Effects Being Shut Off By Other Apps?

Oct 15, 2010

I have recently switched to Kubuntu 10.10 maverick on my laptop. Almost every time that I start my laptop up now, the screens and the start bar are very plain looking. When I go to my desktop effects, it says that they have been stopped or shut down by another program. so, I use alt+shift+f12 to turn them back on. Sometimes they turn back on and stay on, other times they will shut right back off and say that another application has shut them off. So, I'm just wondering if this is a known bug and if so, how do you fix this?

On a side note, I've noticed that be web browsers are kind of glitchey on kubuntu 10.10. For instance, whenever I am on a site where there is a text box that I need to type into, it sometimes doesn't load and when it does, it will mess up throughout the time i'm typing. So,

Fedora X86/64bit :: Running F11 I586 On Laptop / System Shut Off (not A Normal OS Shut Down, But A Sudden Power Off Without Warning)?

Oct 13, 2009

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Fedora :: F14 On Laptop Mysteriously Stopped Booting?

Feb 1, 2011

Fedora 14 on my laptop has randomly decided that it hates me. The system stops booting after "starting atd", right when its starting X. It "hangs" after the fedora logo, though it will reboot when I try "ctrl-alt-delete". I can see that haldaemon is failing to start, and when I boot the kernel with "selinux=0" it gives me an error message:

error while loading shared libraries: libdbus-glib-1.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory. NetworkManager fails with same message. the .so file is in its proper directory, where it has been all along. I've tried booting into runlevels 2 and 3. No luck there either. It'll boot to the login prompt, but as soon as I under my userid the screen flashes. I managed to get the error message it was giving me before the flash: inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 503: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT` failed!

I can boot into single user mode just fine. I've checked dmesg and Xorg logs, but I honestly don't know what I'm looking for (and I imagine that those logs would be useless if I boot into runlevel 1, since the error is at higher runlevels. But I can't get the logs for those because the computer just hangs. SSH and networking are never enabled before the hang.)

I'm at a loss here. I use the machine for both school and work [and I have quite a bit of both to do today] and I've been trying to get it to boot normally for hours now. Anyone have any ideas that I could try?

Ubuntu :: Applets Mysteriously Vanish From Panels

Dec 12, 2010

A friend of mine is running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Applets (indicator applet, main menu, etc.) on his top GNOME panel frequently fail to appear when he logs in, and have to be added manually.

What we've tried:

1) Right-click each applet and check "Lock to Panel".

2) In gconf-editor, set "/apps/panel/global/locked_down" to true.

Neither makes the applets stay put.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as well, and have no such problem.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Battery Life Mysteriously Worse

Mar 3, 2011

I've used an older version of ubuntu before, when it was brown and orange. I ran it off of a 8 gb solid state express card. Used it for about a month, didn't like it because I didn't know how to install anything and because it was slow (because ran off of a express card). Now, I'm looking to try ubuntu 10.10 on a partition of a main hard drive, specifically on the chrome os laptop when it comes out.

Now, I've read up that the battery life for ubuntu is mysteriously worse than on what would run a mac or a windows. This battery life issue is driving me away from ubuntu. How much battery life would I actually get for ubuntu if my battery life lasts 4 hours running a windows 7? And how much hard drive space do I need to partition to install ubuntu?

Slackware :: Flash Mysteriously Stopped Working

Feb 16, 2010

With Firefox 3.6 from the official repository, and the flash-player-plugin from Slacky.eu installed here. It's worked fine up until now, where websites either claim it's not installed, or show a blank box instead.NoScript is installed on my Firefox, but given that on fully trusted pages (of which there are very few) it still happens, and nothing else blocks Flash besides AdBlock and Firefox's own settings (both checked too) I suspect the plugin.I also tried downloading direct from Adobe, and plonking the libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib / mozilla/plugins and making a backup of the original one (The one provided from Slacky's package) but to no avail. So it seems to be the plugin, but for inexplicable reasons.Would anyone happen to be able to explicate this inexplicability?

Ubuntu :: Space On Root Partition Mysteriously Disappearing

Oct 19, 2010

I'm not sure if I can even explain this properly! I'm attaching a hopefully self-explanatory screenshot of

(1) system monitor saying that 23.3 out of 24.6 GB of my root is used (!!!)
(2) diskanalyzer showing root should be 5.9+4+3.3+some small stuff = about 15 GB.

At startup I get a warning saying something along the lines of "you only have 50MB available on root file system.. you should delete unnecessary files.. " and that opens Disk Usage Analyzer.

Possible suspect - I had been trying out VirtualBox. On root. My virtual machine did have an 8gig hard drive, expandable I believe. But it never got past 1.7, and I've removed it, uninstalled VB and removed it from trash. (Is this weird: my trash is at /home/me/.local/share/Trash/files - took me a hell of a while to find it!)

With 100MB available on root I can barely do anything! My whole compiz/config setup even disappeared after a reboot!

Networking :: SIP Packets Mysteriously Disappearing / When Iptables-nat Activated

Sep 10, 2010

I have a very weird case in my firewall.I have an asterisk server and some phones and between them there is a linux firewall based on iptables. With basic rules on iptables everything works ok, but when I put a single nat rule (no matter what rule I use) some packets from some phones misteriously disappear from interfase to interfase.

Clearer:The firewall has two interfases: eth0 (pointing to phones) and eth2 (pointing to asterisk). One problematic phone is 192.168.3.242, so I use tcpdump this way.

Ubuntu's current utility works by clicking on the top right corner which shows a list without opening a new mini-window or anything allowing me to select however it is that I want to change the state of my computer if it wasn't obvious as to what I am referring to.

Debian :: How To Exit Windows Mgr (Cannot Shut Down Computer)

Apr 22, 2010

I could be wrong, but I swear that when I first considered switching to Linux a few years back the gnome windows manager's main menu had an option to exit said windows manager. There is obviously no such option now. Looking at some other forums, it seems that you can START gnome properly... but to exit the windows manager you have to kill processes? If I want to close down the Gnome WM without rebooting the computer - say, to just try TWM alone, or some other WM - there must be a 'legal' way to do it.

Debian :: Unplug USB Drive - Kernel Failure - System Will Not Shut Down

Jul 13, 2011

I have a flash drive that I regularly use on my laptop. If I unplug the flash drive without first unmounting it, I get a popup notification of a kernel failure (with diagnostics sent to kerneloops.org). Then, if I attempt to shut down the system via the console, it hangs on "The system is going down for halt/reboot NOW!" and doesn't actually shut down. Using Gnome's graphical System > Shut Down feature just logs me out and sends me to the login screen; the shutdown feature from there does nothing. I have to disconnect the power cord on the laptop in order to shut it down, and I don't like doing this.

System: 32-bit Debian Squeeze stable with kernel version 2.6.32-5-686, running Gnome 2.30.2, on an Acer Aspire 5570z.

I use Keepassx to store my passwords and keep the keyfile for my password database on the flash drive in question. I mention this just in case it helps determine what's causing the failure.

dmesg has quite a bit to say about this:

Debian Multimedia :: Gnome Update Error - Forced To Shut Down Via Terminal

May 3, 2015

I have recently updated my GNOME installation from 3.x to 3.14. Suddenly, there are many glitches. The power buttons on the power menu does nothing, I am forced to shut down via the terminal, everything goes black every now and again, and there is a weird colour pattern behind some icons when I hover over them. But most importantly, the icons and text do not show up on the "Activities -> Show Applications -> All" menu. They still there, as you can see the opening animation before they disappear, and I can click on them, but you just can't see them. The "Frequent" menu works fine. Here is a YouTube video I have made to explain my problem.

[URL] ...

I did change the icons, but this was after these problems started happening, and so it should be un-related.

Debian :: Can't Get Basic Apps

Jun 2, 2011

I'm trying to get compiz setup but it is not having any affect at all. I installed it and went to the synaptic system manager and added all the compiz plugins that were there. I restarted several times before and after going to the synaptic system manager. It said installed successfully, however it has no effect so it isn't "on" whatsoever. I have watched ..... tutorials on how to set it up. It looked easy enough but did not work for me. I have tried commands from tutorials but I don't know enough or how to edit folder contents. I think they were old tutorials anyways, I am running the newest squeeze debian distro. The 3d desktop was one reason I wanted to try linux. If I can't get the basic apps like this to work then there is no reason for me to use linux.

Debian :: Using KDE Apps In GNOME?

May 24, 2011

it was difficult for me to get it set up. So, when Squeeze became the stable release, I strayed. Tried Ubuntu, Mandriva, PCLOS, Mepis, both KDE and Gnome, and after using Lenny for several months, they all sucked. So I'm back, and although it took me several hours, over a few days, and 50 searches, I have Squeeze set up just how I want. I love how fast and stable it is!!

I've become a big fan of Gnome over the past year, because of how simple, fast and stable it is. But, there are a few KDE apps I prefer over the ones available for Gnome. I want to install K3b, KTorrent, digiKam/showFoto, and probably Amarok (although I haven't given Rythembox a fair chance). I realize this will install the KDE base, but other than the space taken up, is there any disadvantage to doing this? If there's a chance it will affect the speed and stability of the system, I'll learn to live without them.

Is there a way to extract the MD5 SUM from a .iso I download in Gnome?? K3b does it automatically before the burn. Does Brasero do this and I'm just missing it?

I've tried using Transmission a few times before to download torrents, but never with success, yet with KTorrent, I just click on the file and it starts downloading it.

Debian :: Adobe Air Apps Cannot Be Installed In Sid

Jul 7, 2010

I have read this simple instruction to get me tweetdeck into my desktop computer (AMD Athlon X2, 2GB ram, 160gb HDD - Debian SID)[URL]

I'm not sure what happened but installing Adobe Air in Debian is like installing in Windows XP -- I used the .bin file instead of the .deb because the .deb say's Adobe Air is 32 bit application.

So it is installed (sucessful or not I still don't know) -=- I go to tweetdeck site and got to its desktop page where there should be an install button -- however, there aren't any or it wont show -- it partially show like a running circle but it's not running. Then when I click on it -- it disappears.

I tried installing other air app like livebrush but the same -- the button is not shown. My Sid is updated as of now. I also have google chrome browser -- the behavior is the same as with iceweasel v3.5.10
