How do you set the default player for things like CDs and DVDs? I finally got Audacious installed but every time I play a CD the other player starts up. Same for DVDs and so on.

I installed Fedora 12 recently. The Open multimedia installed by default does not play DVDs. It stops with the error " Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because it does not have the appropriate plugins to be able to read from the disc. "

I am having problems playing dvds on my laptop which is a bluray player. I cannot even play regular dvds, I can read them and see there is stuff there, but cannot play them in mplayer or totem.

When I put a DVD in my PC (any DVD), it recognizes the DVD and even tells me the title of the movie (for example, it knows that I put Cat People in the DVD drive). But then it gives an error message, "An error occurred. Could not read from resource." I have Ubuntu 9.10 on a HP Pavilion ZE4900 laptop.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a thinkpad with an ibm cd-rw/dvd player. It will play some dvds; others identify the disk but will not play; then the message is that a dvd decrypter is missing. The difference seems to be that a recent dvd will not play, but older ones -- at least the content is older -- play without a problem. The video program on the machine just says "movie player."

Indeed, Dragon starts to play the DVD. However, the image is distorted and you can't recognize anything... This is what the terminal messages say when I start Dragon over the terminal:

I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?

i just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed the LG BE08LU20 on five Centos servers during the past three months. Two HP ML115, two Dell T110 and mine which is an older Dell Dimension. All except one of the Dell T110 work fine. The BE08LU20 drive is used for 50Gb backups using mondoarchive. On the problem machine which has just been installed from scratch again, it will quite happily mount cd and dvds but not 50Gb BD-RE. I take the same BD-RE disk which it objects to and load it on my identical be08lu20 on a Dell Dimension with Centos 5.5 and it is recognized and allows writing. I swapped my working drive for the problem one but it makes no difference. The 'faulty' drive works perfectly correctly on mine. The OS is Centos 5.5 I have used the same DVD to install three machines with it. Two work including mine, but not the T110. Another customer with T110 also has a be08lu20 and mondoarchive with bd-re disks and theirs worked from the start. They have Centos 5.3 and up-to-date patches, but it should make no difference I've tried both usb and e-sata the result is the same. The centos 5.5 has kernel 2.6.18.194-el5PAE

There was another problem with this particular machine. I could install Centos, configure Samba and join the users to the domain without a hiccup. Then in the small hours of the morning (not always the same time) it just locked up, no kbd, no mouse, no display, no disk active, no network. Only solution was switch off and it would come up again quite happily with nothing logged and run without a problem for another 20-24 hours. Dell eventually agreed to replace the motherboard. I installed Centos again from scratch. It's been fine all week. The blu-ray problem has been there from the start, and has NOT been solved by the new motherboard.
I am used to real Player and want to reset it as my default player. How do you do it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to Lucid, I haven't been able to play videos in Totem or VLC player, though I've got all the necessary codecs. The sound plays, but I just get a black screen with (very) occasional flashes of the image. However, I've found that SMPlayer DOES work.
Is there a way to make it the default, so that when I double-click the vids, it will fire up automatically, instead of my having to use right-click/open-with ? I've tried changing it in the multimedia tab of 'Preferred Software', but that doesn't seem to work.
I would like to set xine as my default player for DVD playback and cannot figure out how. I have read other posts that state to right click on file>properties>open with but do not seem to have the open with option when right clicking a dvd that is in my dvd drive. I would also like to change the open with option in the right click menu. The current option is to open with movie player, and movie player cannot seem to find additional plug ins to open file with.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Windows 7 and Ubuntu(latest version), dual boot, and I've locked myself out of Ubuntu. I have 2 hard disks and 2 cd/dvd drives. I was working on getting my 2nd hard drive to mount on boot up and succeeded. I should have left well enough alone, but I changed the 2 cd drive from swap to default, (just to see if it would mount automatically), and now I can't boot into ubuntu. It just hangs. I can't even in get using recovery mode because the updated graphics drivers won't allow me to read the screen during the boot into ubuntu until the boot has completed. If anyone has any ideas, please help. It had been working pretty well until this set back.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried everything first I tried with Preferences/Preferred Applications - no result. then File Type Manager from Ubuntu Tweek - nothing... I tried with a few older Exaile versions (from various repo's) - nothing... compiling 0.3.1.1 from source - still nothing. with these I can set every other player to be default player (so, only Exaile refuses to obey). to be more exact, after setting Exaile as default, double-click on any audio file associated with it results with temporary CPU usage increase and than NOTHING :S just don't tell me to use VLC, Audacious, Rhythmbox, Amarok, QL or any other player... I used them all but I NEED Exaile (and not just because it looks beautiful enough with Ambiance to make me completely forget foobar2k... and because it's sooo stubborn ).
