CentOS 5 :: Yum Update With Awstats Hangs?
Feb 23, 2010
I have a strange issue. The only time I have trouble with yum is when awstats is included in an update. When it is, it always hangs on it when it gets to it. Yum will not complete. I have to cancel out... kill the yum pid and do it again. Tonight I did a yum-complete-transaction to do some unfinished actions - one included the removal of an old awstats - it hung on that.

Because I had some difficulties to make awstats running (I'm not an expert!), I would share my experience with a MINI STEP BY STEP GUIDE. I would like also to discuss some details with experts thus at the end of the guide ,I'll make some questions to them:
I have installed a new server Centos 5.5 32 bit and configured 3 virtual hosts; at the end of /etc/httpd/conf/http.conf I have:
-------http.conf virtual host--------
ServerName 127.0.0.1
NameVirtualHost *:80
<VirtualHost *:80>

Ran the updater, went to boot to Win7 to use Photoshop and realized that the grub menu was gone. Ubuntu boots by default now. I tried running "sudo update-grub" at a virtual terminal and while it listed the various linux kernels ok, it then got caught in a loop spitting out some crazy looking errors. I rebooted and Ubuntu came up fine. I tried running "sudo update-grub" again from the gnome terminal and it hangs the whole computer for a few minutes and finally gives me this:

i am trying to install centos 5.5 x86_64 as a guest OS in vmware server 2.0.2 using netinstall iso. Installation runs fine until the point, when it tries to install selinux-policy-targeted-2.4.6-279.el5.noarch, the whole virtual pc hangs at this.any ideas? i tried to google few things about this, but i have found nothing. this has happened 3 times in row, whole virtual pc always hangs at the same package. i dont have any other problems with vmware, gentoo runs and installs fine in it.i would prefer to do installation using netinstall.iso, it would take a lot of time to download all cds or whole dvd and all i require is a very basic set of packages.

My Dell poweredge server running CentOS 5.4 and booting kernel-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5. All boot processes seem okay and the graphical screens for CentOS operate, but just before the desktop loads the screen goes blank and the arrow/cursor is being circled by small spheres. This remains indefinitely. While the arrow is being circled, here are the results of 'getinfo.sh device'

I have encountered the same problem as indicated in this post: "udev hang after upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4"[URL]... I'm testing the upgrade path to centos 5.4 on several virtual machines prior to upgrading our production systems. I have upgraded centos 5.2 --> centos 5.4 and centos 5.3 to centos 5.4. In both cases udev hangs after the upgrade. The following message is displayed on the console: "Starting udev: Wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED]"
I found another related post: "udev hangs on boot for a long time, suspect pam_console_apply"[URL]..So, I booted by VMs using the "udevdebug" option to grub and received the same error message - "udevd-event [###]: run_program: Waiting ## seconds for output of '/sbin/pam_console_apply /dev/..."
In my /etc/ldap.conf file "bind_policy hard" is commented out. I added a line "bind_policy soft" as described in the post and my VMs booted fine. NOTE: This problem is not encountered with a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 and the "bind_policy hard" option in the /etc/ldap.conf is commented out as in the upgraded systems. What is really causing this problem and how do I get it addressed? I have a couple hundred systems to update from various releases of CentOS 5 to the latest current version 5.4. It would be nice to get this bug squashed..

I have recently rebooted after applying weeks of updates and I cannot login through ssh. In the /var/log/secure log it shows the public key is accepted but the session never gets to a bash prompt and ctrl-c must be issued from the connecting xterm. I have tried to connect from several other redhat and ubuntu machines all with the same result.

I was wondering how I can get this done. I reinstalled my awstats and deleted my awstats data. How do I pull the data from my original access_log which is around 270MB in size.
Any suggestion? I tried updating awstats but it's timing out and I'm getting an internal server error which I assume is from the 270MB access_log size.

I recently downloaded 11.2 to a flash drive and while updating it from online the updates hangs at 48% and the last line reads:
Installing ./rpm/x86_64/libexpat1-32bit-2.0.1-92.4.1.x86_64.rpm: "XML Parser Toolkit"
This fist loading bar is at 100% and total is at 48%.
Is there a way to safely exit this program it appears to be frozen.

When running Update Manager in KDE, it always hangs at 66/67 files, and I have to click cancel. I then get:
Failed to fetch http:[url]...
Failed to fetch http:[url]...
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

fedora 14 did an automatic update and on reboot it hangs displaying the "f" before the login menu. The "f" is how I now feel......... I do "fn+f2" as it is booting and it displays the sequence of loading items which report all is "ok" until it gets to "jexec services" and then it hangs. I beleive the "jexec service" is a Sun Java item but I am not sure. I have been using Fedora successfully for a number of months and need to get data from the machine.

I'm trying to set up awstats for my web server which runs ISPConfig3. Due to ISPConfig, my log-rotated files have the extension .log.gz, and the naming syntax of DATE-access.log.gz.
According to awstats documentation, I need their tool to merge the log files, however, I cannot get it to work. I always get file not found or pipe error like messages.
Code:
I took a look at permissions, log files are world-readable. Checked path's 1000 times, no typo. When I try to find out whats wrong, the problems usually begins when I try to use the * character in the LogFile variable, ..
Anyone got experience with multiple log files and awstats? ...

After my most recent update, the boot sequence hangs at:"a start job is running for Create Volatile files and directories" with a timer and no limit .. I let it go for 12 minutes, but nothing. It seems as long as this sequence remains, the boot process does not finish and just hangs here.I haven't been able to find anything specific to this. I currently cannot boot into this machine, though do have access to files via dual boot.

I did an update recently and it won't continue booting past a certain point - which I think is rather strange, the last message I can manage to see is:
Code:
* Starting init crypto dicks...
No. That's not a typo. I couldn't believe my own eyes - I took a picture: [URL]
I can guarantee you this is not a joke. I suspect my video card is aging on me as I get a 'London Pound" symbol on my CLI terminal sometimes.
Anyway, that's not the real issue for me. I cannot start into 2.6.31-17, but I can start into 2.6.31-16 - is anyone else having this problem?
Edit: Restarting doesn't give me the crypto dicks thing but I still get another common error:
Code:
init: ureadahead-other main process (###) terminated with status 4

I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 on a desktop. I then did the system updates and on the reboot the system now hangs at the splash screen before the login screen. I only get a blinking cursor on the text-based terminals. I don't see the grub menu, I assume because Ubuntu is the only OS on this machine. So I can't boot to single user or text-only mode.

I ran apt-get update to fetch firefox5. I didn't updated ubuntu since long so it down loaded around 280 updates including firefox. Now while installing I saw once EULA acceptance message for Microsoft ttf font installation, this message window doesn't have any button etc to confirm, so I did ctrl+c to exit, and then "apt-get" seems to have terminated in terminal. But I checked that it is still running in the background in process list, not sure active process or not.
I did rebooted PC assuming update might have completed. Now after reboot it boots up to the login prompt, but I don't see any cursor movement or key stroke effect. It just stays there and then after some time shuts down, with flashing error message relate to "Init.." i couldn't read it completely.

In a squeeze box, I installed awstats and it's working like a charm. Its cron job update the awstats database every 10 minutes (as it runs as root). But I would like to be able to update the statistics from the browser as well. So I setup everything as required and I gave "read" access to "others" to every apache log file. Now, a couple of questions came to my mind:
1. Am I compromising server's security giving "read" access to "others" to apache log files?
2. Instead of giving "read" access to "others", I could add www-data user to adm group (as apache log files are owned by root:adm and permissions are rw-r----). Is this more secure than giving "read" access to "others"? 3. If the option would be giving "read" access to "others" at the end, a log file would be owned by root:adm and its permissions be rw-r--r--. As apache rotates its log files, when Apache create a new log file, does it preserve the permissions (rw-r--r--) or create it with the default permissions (rw-r-----)?

I'm trying to install the GeoIP plugin for AWStats. I've installed the packages geoip-database, libgeoip1, and libgeo-ip-perl. geoip-database installs the database file at /usr/share/GeoIP/GeoIP.dat, so that's the path I'm using in my AWStats config file. When I try to run AWStats on my logs, it hangs without generating any files. No debug messages about this are printed when I enable them. I've also tried installing libgeo-ipfree-perl and uncommenting the geoipfree line in my conf file, but that didn't work either.
Possibly useful detail: I previously tried installing the GeoIP C library and Perl module manually, which didn't work, and then I tried installing the Pure Perl module manually, which also didn't work. I simply deleted them all, which I'm not sure was a good idea. I don't know anything about this stuff.

I like AWstats for viewing/visualizing web traffic to my server. However, I am in a situation where I would like to visualize ALL traffic to/from a network, in a way similar to AWstats. That is to say, Free and Visual. The program will have to be linux/http/java based as it will run on a linux server off of a Network Tap.
