CentOS 5 :: 5.3 Graphic Installation Hangs?

Apr 16, 2009

I'm attempting to install CentOS 5.3 on my IBM IntelliStation Z Pro 6221/37G, powered by some extra equipments as nVidia NV44 GeForce 6200 video card, MV88SX6041 SATA II Controller, 2x1GB DRAM.

The problem: CentOS 5.3 DVD i386 didn't install, the screen becomes unreadable because of vertical bars just after anaconda start running. Choosing at boot time different "linux resolutions" did not help, as well as the "text mode" still useless because Logical Volumes need to be created/handled and the graphical interface is mandatory.

Same result booting CentOS 5.2 Live CD. This sounds really strange to me. I checked iso images against their md5sum and are ok. Centos 5.3 x86_64 does not boot yet :"Your CPU does not support long mode", evem they are 2 x Xeon 2.8GHz / 512KB

Fedora Installation :: F13 Live CD Hangs At "f" Graphic?

Oct 9, 2010

I was trying to do a fresh install of Fedora 13 using a live CD on my 7-year old laptop. However, the installation failed during creation of home folder, citing some disk issue.Now, when I try to reboot my comp with the live CD, the boot screen hangs at the "f" graphic. What could be wrong? Is there anything I can do to reboot with the live CD and also install Fedora 13?Also, is there a way to fix corrupt disk sectors or skip them during installation?

CentOS 5 :: Centos Installation In Vmware Hangs At Selinux-policy-targeted?

Jun 14, 2010

i am trying to install centos 5.5 x86_64 as a guest OS in vmware server 2.0.2 using netinstall iso. Installation runs fine until the point, when it tries to install selinux-policy-targeted-2.4.6-279.el5.noarch, the whole virtual pc hangs at this.any ideas? i tried to google few things about this, but i have found nothing. this has happened 3 times in row, whole virtual pc always hangs at the same package. i dont have any other problems with vmware, gentoo runs and installs fine in it.i would prefer to do installation using netinstall.iso, it would take a lot of time to download all cds or whole dvd and all i require is a very basic set of packages.

CentOS 5 :: Installation Hangs / What To Do?

Jan 11, 2010

I need to set a new centos on an "old" box : PIV 1.8 1.5Gb

The Centos will run on a 40 Gb PATA Hard Drive set as main drive, The Box runs a another SATA Drive with 2 different windows installations.

The installer first hanged on the loading ata_piix driver screen so I restarted with the irqpoll option to complete the wizard.
But I'm now stopped on the last X screen : starting installation process please wait.

I have changed the hard drive, the DVD drive, the Centos DVD, tried with a 5.3 and 5.4 with no success.

CentOS 5 :: Kickstart Installation Hangs At GetNetConfig?

Apr 22, 2011

I am trying to do a kickstart installation of CentOS 5.5 x86 using a static IP on eth1. (The machine has 4 ethernet ports). I set ks, ksdevice, ip, netmask, and noipv6 when the boot disc asks for the init commands.I have similar networking information configured in the kickstart script. I have tried switching the order of the network config lines in the kickstart script to place eth1 at the top. Either way the installation hangs. On tty3 I can see that the command last called is getNetConfig. All of this configuration is using static IPs. I'm not sure why it thinks it has to do anything extra... Is there a problem trying to reuse the same eth1 NIC for the second stage? I have tried using the same and different IPs on the same subnet but nothing changes the outcome. Both the kickstart file and the install tree are on the same subnet, the same server in fact. Both are accessed via FTP but I had this problem with NFS as well.

Fedora :: Rpm Install Crash - Now Hangs On "f" Graphic

Jun 22, 2010

I was installing supertux for my daugter, which doesn't apparently have a yum repo, I'm pretty sure I had the right rpm. Anyway, I got a hard-boot/crash in the middle of install, and now she's bricked. I had alot of configuration done on the box that I'd rather not redo. Where do I start debugging it? If I hammer on ctrl-alt-F1 on boot, instead of hanging on the "f", I see all the services start, then I get a (literally) blue screen with a blinking cursor at the bottom, and a ctrl-alt-F2 will get me a login screen, whereupon I can 'startx', but all the applets on the gnome panel are missing, so the thing is clearly fubar.

I've alot of freeBSD experience, but it's alot more nuts&bolts than fedora (and it's laptop support is total crap). I have no idea how we get from boot->gdm normally, or where to start looking for which .so's or whatever got hammered...

CentOS 5 :: 5.2 Installation Hangs On Server With Large Number Of Drives?

Apr 6, 2009

I am attempting to upgrade a system from 4.7 to 5.2 using a (now) DVD drive attached to the onboard IDE. Originally I had tried using a remote NFS image and a USB stick but I thought maybe there was a problem with the image. I can get up to the point of the installation of selecting the keyboard for the system and then it freezes and never goes any further. It doesn't appear to be a kernel panic since I can still switch between consoles.

I've got an MSI K9NGM2-FID with 14 drives in it. It serves as a file server for our backup server. It's got a secondary 4 port Silicon Image SII 3114 SATA card using the sata_sil module, and an old IDE Promise FastTrak TX2000. Technically I could have 16 drives but the 750W PS is walking the fine line on tripping it's self-breaker with the 14 drives and 7 fans. I would like to NOT have to disconnect all of this to do the upgrade.

I thought maybe that running the install using the "noprobe" option would help so it didn't detect and load the modules for the Silicon Image or the Promise cards and detect all of the drives but it still gets stuck on the step after selecting the keyboard. The installation info console and the dmesg console don't really provide any useful information. The installation console says:

INFO : moving (1) to step welcome
INFO : moving (1) to step language
INFO : moving (1) to step keyboard
INFO : moving (1) to step findrootparts

And the last lines of the dmesg console says:

<6>device-mapper: multipath: version 1.0.5 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath round-robin: version 1.0.0 loaded
<6>device-mapper: multipath emc: version 0.0.3 loaded

Is there a hidden "debug" option that will turn on a lot of extra logging?

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Unable To Install Graphic Card Driver For Dell Precision T3500?

Jul 28, 2010

I have recently installed Centos. During the installation, I noticed that only sound was being tested during the installation. Once everything has been installed successfully. I can run Centos with no problem. However, when I tried to switch from one window (browser) to another. The display was slow. Thus, I suspected the driver for the graphic card of my PC is not being installed successfully. When I type /sbin/lspci | grep VGA in the terminal, I get the following output:

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation Unknown device 06fd (rev a1)

Then, I went to the dell support & driver site to download the driver. In the readme file, it is suggested to install dkms first before installing the graphics driver by typing rpm -ivh dkms-2.1.0.1-1.noarch.rpm

I managed to install the dkms without any error.However, when I use rpm to install the graphics driver as suggested by the readme file:
rpm -ivh dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64.rpm

I get the following errors: error: Failed dependencies:
libX11.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64
libXext.so.6()(64bit) is needed by dell-nvidia-190.42-1dkms_rhel5.3.x86_64[code]....

Since the above errors may be related to the missing packages then I use yum provides and install to find the missing packages. Even I try to install all the matched packages, i still cant install the driver for my graphic card. To be honest, i am not very sure whether I am doing the right things or not. how to solve this slow display problem when switching from one application to another.

CentOS 5 :: Udev Hangs After Upgrade To CentOS 5.4?

May 7, 2010

I have encountered the same problem as indicated in this post: "udev hang after upgrade from 5.3 to 5.4"[URL]... I'm testing the upgrade path to centos 5.4 on several virtual machines prior to upgrading our production systems. I have upgraded centos 5.2 --> centos 5.4 and centos 5.3 to centos 5.4. In both cases udev hangs after the upgrade. The following message is displayed on the console: "Starting udev: Wait timeout. Will continue in the background [FAILED]"

I found another related post: "udev hangs on boot for a long time, suspect pam_console_apply"[URL]..So, I booted by VMs using the "udevdebug" option to grub and received the same error message - "udevd-event [###]: run_program: Waiting ## seconds for output of '/sbin/pam_console_apply /dev/..."

In my /etc/ldap.conf file "bind_policy hard" is commented out. I added a line "bind_policy soft" as described in the post and my VMs booted fine. NOTE: This problem is not encountered with a fresh install of CentOS 5.4 and the "bind_policy hard" option in the /etc/ldap.conf is commented out as in the upgraded systems. What is really causing this problem and how do I get it addressed? I have a couple hundred systems to update from various releases of CentOS 5 to the latest current version 5.4. It would be nice to get this bug squashed..

Fedora Installation :: 13 - Raid0 - Graphic Card Or Something Else

Oct 11, 2010

I've already got two installs without much problems.. one on my laptop and another fedora13 install on an older comp just to test it a bit before installing it on my main comp. But now I've got a problem. Both those install went without problems but when I started installation on my main comp first I've noticed some graphic problems when there is installation started and there is mouse and fedora 13 welcome installation screen. there are some like glitches or something no idea how to describe them.. like bad pixels in small upper part of the screen. But ignoring that everything went OK up to the part where I can choose a standard discs or non starts like sans and stuff..

When I choose standard disc installation just freeze there. No idea what is happening. Only this that came across my mind is that there is a problem with raid maybe? There are 2x640Gb HDD in raid0, there is win7 installed, and another 1Tb HDD, non-raid member disk, where I would like to install Fedora and have a dual boot. Still got programs that I need win for I'm afraid. Installation went smooth on laptop and another comp but there is no raid so I'm guessing that could be a problem. This comp where installation froze is in short:

Ubuntu Installation :: Noisy Pc. + Graphic Not Working?

Jan 22, 2010

I have recently installed 9.10 on my pc. All seems ok except there is a lot of noise coming from the tower now. It sounds like one of those old dial up modems that computers used to have. It starts right after the ubuntu starts. On the first install I had vertical lines on the screen that would become more broken the busier th computer was.So I installed again selecting to use lower graphics mode before installation. The lines have gone but I can't use avant window navigator as I get an error message saying the screen hasn't been composited. It invites me to use compiz to do this but a really can't see how.Also it won't let me select visual effects in appearance preferences. The most annoying thing is the noise like an old modem is constantly trying to connect to the web.

Ubuntu Installation :: Two Monitors On Two Graphic Cards?

Jun 10, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. I should have two graphic cards, and they are both detected in the terminal.

Code:
lspci | grep VGA
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation C77 [GeForce 8200] [10de:084b] (rev a2)
03:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation G98 [GeForce 8400GS] [10de:10c3] (rev a2)

Both cards have monitors plugged into their VGA ports, but only one of the monitors shows a display. The other monitor goes into power saver mode right after start up. Nvidia X Server settings only shows a single graphics card (the 8200) and a single monitor (detect monitor finds nothing). Going through Prefences: Monitors also only shows a single monitor and doesn't detect a thing when detect monitors is clicked.

Monitor one has 1440 x 900 resolution and I'm not sure what the resolution of Monitor two is supposed to be, but it displays rather nicely at being set to 1440 x 900.

Both graphics cards are detected and usable in Vista, but a quick switch of the plugs shows that only the 8200 is registering in Ubuntu.

Ideally I want to have a dual monitor set up, with one screen showing documents or pictures with the other using Gimp or Blender.
