CentOS 5 Server :: RAID0 - Getting Extremely Slow Read / Write Speed

Jun 28, 2010

I am new to Centos and linux in general. I have just got myself a Dell 1950 server with 2x 1T SATA2 hard disks in it. now the server comes with a PERC5i Raid card with 512Mb. Well I put these in raid 0 and the raid card initilzed the disks to 128 writeback and read ahead. When I loaded centos it did not recognize the dell layout so therefore wanted to initalize it again, so I done this as it wanted. Now I created a 80gb boot and o/s partition and a 100gb swap the rest was created into LVM space to run solus vmwear. But I found the raid 0 to be getting extreamly slow read and write speeds.

Example same disks
Desktop PC max 214mb/s windows vista 64
Server with centos 104mb/s

Now I am not sure but I am told that I need to align the o/s with the raid card settings but I have no idea how to do this. How to do this in plain easy step by step instructions. I mean how to calculate it, how to format the disk this way, and what files to edit where if needed. I have spent hours trying to figure out why my raid 0 is slower than a single disk.

General :: Embedded Webserver (mysql) On A Compact Flash: Reduce Read / Write Operations?

Jul 7, 2011

I've developed a tiny webserver for home automation out of an ALIX 1D, and based on a debian lenny. It runs very smoothly and is now able to operate quite a lot of different equipment from a webapp. But i'm not sure how I should handle the compact flash, regarding read/write limitations. From what I've read the partitioning should be ext2, which would disallow the journalisation of the system. A utility to 'flatten' the repartition of write cycles exists, would it be relevant to use if the partition is ext2 ?

I will also disable all logging in execution mode (a debug mode will provide the logs). Is there any other parameters I have to take into account for maximum reliability (i.e. does the system randomly write in some files for various and potentially turned off purposes)? As for the mysql database, it's not important data, and it's actually reconstructed every time the server boots. Given this, is there a way to store the db in RAM rather than in a file? I'm not sure it's the right place to ask, but I sometimes see redirection to here from stack overflow.

Ubuntu :: USB Read / Write Speed Unbelievably Slow

Apr 14, 2011

I started a thread in the hardware section, but I've narrowed it down to being a software issue. The problem is that all USB devices are written to at about 1MB/s, and is read at equally slow speeds. After testing my computer on an older Ubuntu release (8.04 32bit), I verified it wasn't a hardware issue, because the read and write speeds were like they were supposed to be. Then, I downloaded the 32bit release of the Ubuntu version I'm currently using (an up-to-date version of Natty) and booted the live cd of it. It was equally slow there as well.

The read/write speeds are equally poor on openSUSE and Arch Linux, so I don't think that it's an issue with Ubuntu, as much as it seems like a kernel issue (or maybe not, you guys can correct me if it seems like it isn't ).

I am running Lenny. USB storage devices are painfully slow, if the data to be copied is above 4GB it works on transferring for more than half an hour and then comes up with an error dialog(saying something like file size is too big). The problem exists in both read and write.

I did google a bit and here is the output of lsmod | grep hci

uhci_hcd18672 0

CentOS 5 :: Can't Write To NTFS: Volume Is Read-only?

Aug 22, 2010

I installed CentOS 5.5 32-bit with Gnome and want to use it as a file server. The volume I wish to share is a 1.5TB NTFS partition stored on a USB drive. I installed "ntfsprogs" and "fuse-ntfs-3g" to get NTFS support. However, I only have read access to the volume.

How can I fix this and get Read+Write to the NTFS drive?

Ubuntu :: Graphical Operations (Scrolling / Moving) Slow

Jan 31, 2011

On one Ubuntu desktop 10.04 I got an ati 4800 series using the proprietary drivers. All was working well until a reboot a couple of days ago. I am not sure if it had something to do with one of the massive updates I installed on that day. After that, operations like scrolling, moving windows etc have been dramatically slow. I tried to boot from live cd with 10.04 and everything seemed ok.

CentOS 5 :: Cluster Suite And Fence For VMWare ESXi 4.0

Oct 22, 2009

This is my first post, and i have a question with the fence software for VMWare ESXi. The fence_vmware agent only works with ESX, and redhat (in you GIT repository) has submited a new agent called fence_vmware_ng that claims to work with ESXi. But the problem is that they do not specify the version that works with that. Anybody has test the fence_vmware_ng agent for VMWare ESXi 4.0 ?, i follow the instructions here: [URL]...and i can install the software, the API from VMWARE site, etc, but in the moment when i run the agent nothing happen, The agent connects to server, i see in logs, but the off-reboot-on operations not works. Only works status operations, that return the state of a virtual machine. I have CentOS 5.3 (fully today updated) with RHCS.

Ubuntu :: Read And Write To USB?

Jul 18, 2011

I did install QLandkartGT and the plugin to use Garmin with it and it looks like it work, but when I do press "Live Log" I get the error message; "Device Link Error. Failed to request real time position. Realtime thread failed. Failed to configure USB: could not set config 1: Operating not permitted".

I also get a similar error when trying to download tracks; "Failed to download tracks. Failed to configure USB: could not set config 1: Operation not premitted".

My guess is that Ubuntu do not allow programs to use the USB port, so my question is how I do allow this program (or all) to use the USB ports.

Fedora :: Read & Write Share With NFS In 13

I can't see any option for recursive directories in nfs in fedora 13.

This is my set-up:

Code:

Code:

save and exit.

Code:

When i mount the directory /media/Data from another Fedora 13 box i don't have read and write permissions for each and every file. The -R recursive option would be handy unfortunately this option is unavailable. The red hat docs have not been helpful in this respect.

Code:

Code:

The mounted partition is of the ext3 type. With the nfs-3g type i don't have any issue however most of my directories/partitions are of the ext3 type so i need get it sorted.

I changed my user name id number to the same number on all boxes thus giving me write access. There must be a better solution than this.

Ubuntu :: Write And Read From A Ext3 8GB Usb?

Feb 15, 2011

I have a netbook with Ubuntu 10.10 installed in it,and a Pc with also ubuntu 10.10 in it , but x86_64.

I want to copy some iso files and data from my user home directory on the netbook , to the user home directory of the other pc , using a 8 GB usb formated in ext3 with gparted in my pc.

One iso is a windows 7 one to burn then with K3b , as i need to have windows installed in that box. Also of another iso that i have to burn too (windows 7 recovery disk) , and 3 anti-virus trials for windows.

As the usb is owned by the root (or more properly the mounting point,no?), and i can't use my user to copy data to it i usually do :

Usually , what i use is "sudo nautilus" then go to the place where is the data , copy it , and paste it then in the usb. Then in the other pc i do a chgrp and chown to the iso or file.

But , perhaps this is not the better approach. I have investigated a bit , and i think that i have found a better way , but i have some dudes.

The method is change the owner, group and permissions of the mounting point:

Code:
cd /media
ls
umount /dev/sdb1
sudo mkdir usb

[Code].....

If i do this steps in both computers, with each user,in the netbook i can copy the iso to the usb (as fox can write to the mount point of the usb ), but can the other user in the pc 'mulder' read the iso , so be copied to /home/mulder, and then be able to burn it in k3b with success ?

I suppose that having 766 , it should be able to read it , but would have the own of the file ?

How important is not to only be able to read it , but also own it ?

I suppose if the user ID is the same , wouldn't be any problem ,as each ubuntu would supose that the file is owned by their user.

Perhaps the user name change, but if the ID is the same , the user is the same for ubuntu , not any different, no ?
