CentOS 5 :: Installation Of 5.4_i386 - ACPI Errors ?
Jun 25, 2011
I just tried to install CentOS 5.4 on my notebook (HP G42-214BR), I use Windows 7 at the moment.
On the first time I got W7 installed at C: and couldn't istall centos on it. Before trying again I went to Windows and free something like 40GB from C:, but the disc where C: is went from basic to a dynamic disc.
After that I tried to install, and got some errors like:
And the final row was like:
And the installation don't go any further than this. What is going wrong?

I'm a total Linux newb, and I seem to have got the wrong laptop for that. An L505D-GS6000. Apparently, it's hard to install linux on it unless you do some things (it stops with a bunch of ACPI errors. I found a solution, but I have no idea how to do it.
To summarize:
for L505D GS6000
Install 10.4
Boot with pci=noacpi
Run HexOr's script found here: [URL]
Get wifi drivers from here [URL]
I have 10.4 working on my Toshiba Satellite L505D GS6000, with everything fine, power controls, trackpad, wifi now." How do I boot with pci=noacpi? How do I run a script?

I have a HP Pavilion dv7-2230sa During boot I get a series of errors about ACPI and AHCI Conflicts, the result of which I have to dissable ACPI with acpi=off. However when acpi=off my wireless Broadcom b43 series refuses to enable the wifi. I just can't press the button that would enable / dissable the wifi.
The wifi is detected, the drivers and firmware are installed, however the light remains firmly in the RED.the ethernet works, sound works fine, There also seems to be an issue with the ATi/Radeon Driver being missing which is causing fatal errors at boot time and also some memory conflicts again causing fatal errors.
I have tried this laptop under opensuse 11.2 and now under opensuse 11.3M5 without sucsess - however to my dislike Ubuntu have managed to resolve this by accident between 9.4 and 9.10 but i wanna use opensuse not ubuntu i have asked them to tell me how they fixed it to share it with you but I am still plowing my way through their forum!

When I run OpenSUSE from the Live CD using normal settings, booting stops with a blank screen a moment after the kernel is loaded. When running it with ACPI disabled, it works, but direct rendering is disabled, even though it detects my video card (Mobility Radeon HD 5650) correctly Here's the Xorg.0.log file: my xorg log - [URL]

We have two Sangoma U100 products connected to our Acer Aspire Revo 360 (runs on Atom board). The Sangoma USB units provide connectivity to PSTN. Occassionaly and probably in a pattern they have failed every monday for the past month or so.

Any pointers would be appreciated. Following is some portions of dmesg output:

I'm having a bit of a problem with a CentOS install I'm working on.This computer is an Asus M2A-VM mobo with the latest bios and a fully patched CentOS 5.3 system.The system randomly freezes and I've been able to narrow it down to what i think is ACPI issues with the chipset since the system is rock stable if I use the ACPI=off option in grub. However, when I do, I get messages about OHCI and EGCI controllers not having the correct PCI IRQ or somesuch and my USB don't work. Since this system has a usb keyboard, mice and printer, that's a bit of an issue!The system boots fine but will freeze after a random amount of time, sometimes even during startup (after the X Window system has been opened).
I'm at the end of my rope here as I'm admittedly pretty new to Linux (about 2 months experience although I've succesfully set up 5 systems and a zimbra server in that time - slowly learning when I'm trying to do something) and I've been scouring the net to try and find a solution to no avail.I know this particular chipset seems to be very trouble prone if I look around but the only thing I could find about issues like mine was related to ACPI with the chipset but that supposedly solved in earlier kernel revisions (and I have the latest kernel).troubleshoot the defective part of ACPI on my chipset would be appreciated so I can turn off the offending ACPI "feature".
PS : I also get an error message when booting : ACPI expecting a [REFERENCE] package element, found type F7B953PC

I have tested just now if my small compaq 110 will work with ubuntu 10.04.1, it works from the life CD, but it needs the acpi=off to be set.
Whe I install it from that CD, where do I have to set the acpi=off before I reboot? (the ubuntu will not boot otherwise)

I've installed 10.10 on a laptop and everything is working except for suspend. The laptop will go into suspend, but will not wake up. I have to hard reboot to recover. From my research it appears to have something to do with ACPI and I would like to switch to APM. However all the instructions I found for doing this seem to apply to older versions of Ubuntu before the switch to Grub2 so there is no menu.lst file to make changes to. So I'm looking to understand how to switch to APM in 10.10?

I try to set up a 5 nodes cluster and a shared Coraid Storage with conga but it fails with "Shared Storage Support" checked.The message is:'A problem occurred when installing packages: Packages of set "Clustered Storage" are not present in available repository' and it is shown under every node on the next sceen after I submit.The pc where conga runs is on the same subnet (192.168.xxx.xxx) and it has the same /etc/hosts of the other nodes.In that pc runs a proxy too and the nodes go out through it (that pc has 2 NICs)Every node (2.6.18-128.1.14.el5-xen-x86_64) is patched whith the last yum update (this morning) the same is for the pc (2.6.18-128.1.14.el5).Every node has 4 NICs , 2 NICc towards the storage the others in bonding towards the WAN.Every node is exactly alike, they have been installed with the ks.cfg generated from the first node and they all have the support for Clustering, Virtualization, and Clustered Storage.

Ever since I started to tinker with GNU/Linux on my machine, ACPI has been a thorn in my side.
I can't find any BIOS updates or DSDTs for my laptop, either.
The only distro I've ever gotten to boot without acpi=off is Fedora 20 with the 3.11 kernel and nohz=off parameter. Which leads me to believe a change in the kernel after 3.11 is to blame.
Anyways, I have installed wheezy 7.8 XFCE with LVM encrypted, but alas I am stuck booting with the ACPI=off parameter.
The installation CD booted perfectly, with my wireless card working (an indication of ACPI functioning) as well.
This leads me to believe that it is possible to have a stable wheezy install on this machine.
The install disc used the parameters: video=vesa :ywrap,mtrr and vga=788.
I tried these, but the boot hanged after "switching to clocksource: acpi_pm".
How I could track down the problem with ACPI on my machine?

I have tried both DVD and CD (both are MD5-checked) of both Lenny 5.0.8 and Squeeze RC on my HP DV7-3074CA. (a.k.a 3085DX)When I choose a graphic install, it just hangs after loading the initial files.When I choose the normal install, It gives the following error:
[1.383207] ACPI: EC: Input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction.
Is there a boot command I can input to override this? I tried removing the battery slot, but the only difference is that that message does not appear, but the setup hangs anyway.
UPDATING:Tried "pci=noacpi" but that did lead to a kernel panic.[1.547564] Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

The problems I was having earlier: [URL]seemed to be solved.
I was not getting any error messages after restart. I should have powered down fully, but did not think that it would make a difference. :(
The same issue is again occurring, but after shutdown ONLY and only on the first boot. After the first boot, a system restart will not cause any error messages. (I have rebooted at least ten or twenty times to make sure)
But after a system shutdown, the first boot hangs up and I get the
"Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.6 starting hdb: timeout waiting for DMA hdb: drive not ready for command"
errors five or six times before each boot. Also the system boots very slowly the first time.
I used the getinfo.sh all command and posted the info to the suggested site here: [URL]
Is it possible this could be a hardware issue? This is an old salvaged HDD. Ive changed everything I c an think of in the BIOS with no results.
I have used the hdparm -d /dev/hdb command and verified that dma is not being used on initial boot or after a shutoff but IS being used after a reboot...
here are the HDD settings
/dev/hdb:
multcount = 16 (on)
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)

I've made a CentOS 5 x86_64 setup last year, around november/december.This system is supposed to operate as a home router/gateway, firewall, nas, small intranet/extranet server and media center.I've previously built a system using older parts (Pentium III 866MHz), and had on it CentOS 5 x86.It successfully served the same purpose (except nas and media center) for quite some time, about 1-2years, until i felt i needed better hardware (more memory, speed and disk space mainly) and 64-bit support.
Part of this intended setup isn't finished (router/gateway, firewall, media center), partially because i'm still lacking a good 1000mbps switch and a supported wireless n 3-antenna card in AP/server mode.In the previous setup, i had router/gateway, firewall and small intranet/extranet server working, with a crappy 100mbps switch (the switch is broken now).the new setup has run pretty well, it had been upgraded 2 times, etc...But since it has been installed, even before any updates, upgrades or repo additions, there has been always warnings/errors during kernel boot.I'm listing my specs, configs, versions and logs bellow. all the partitions, RAID and LVM were created during CentOS initial setup.

I'm running CentOS 5.3 x64 within a 32 bit version of Windows XP via VirtualBox. What I'm trying to do is install Eclipse such that I can code in both C++ and Java. I'm going to need to eventually add the OpenMP library, but that's later on. Right now, I'm just trying to get Eclipse to that point, I have the gcc and jre installed...it's just that Eclipse is not wanting to cooperate.
I did uninstall the open-jdk and install the Java SE 6u14. java version "1.6.0_14" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_14-b08) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)

I have just installed a fresh copy of CentOS 5.3 and from the get-go, the NIC started dropping packets like crazy. I even closed the port on the switch,. moved the cable to a different port,. All yield the same "dropping packets" behavior. Zero on the errors, just dropping packets. Should I stick a diff nic instead?

I am a complete novice when it comes to Linux, but want to learn, and installed CentOS5 on an old P4 Dell I had lying around.
Dell Dimension 8100 BIOS is version A02
Install seemed to go fine, but when I power up I get the following message
Red Hat nash version 5.1.19.6 starting
hdb: timeout waiting for DMA
hdb: drive not ready for command
this happens a few times each, then CentOS finally loads.
If Im understanding this right, DMA is direct memory access.
Is it possible the hard drive, motherboard etc does not support this?
