CentOS 5 :: VirtualBox VM On Win2008 Server Pegs CPU?
Aug 31, 2009
I have installed a recent version of CentOS 5 (kernel is 2.6.18-128.el5) as VM in VirtualBox on a Windows 2008 server. When CentOS is totally idle, the CPU on the host (windows) machine is totally pegged from the VirtualBox process. I have read on some other forums that this is a problem with the clock running at 1000Hz and that recompiling the kernel configured with the clock at 100Hz will fix, or at least minimize the problem.
Has anyone else seen this problem? Can someone point me to a good set of instructions on rebuilding the kernel? I followed one set of instructions, but it wasn't for CentOS. After I building everything I was supposed to and copying files over the System.map* and vmlinuz* in the /boot directory (I think I screwed up that one), I went to modify the lilo.conf per the instructions, but I couldn't find it.

I just ran into a weird problem with a CentOS 5.5 64-bit server running VirtualBox 3.2.8 (I would run Vmware Server 2.0.2 if not for the well known fact that Vmware doesn't care about its Server line anymore and it doesn't run on CentOS > 5.3 without major splits). I currently have two guests in that VirtualBox setup, a CentOS 5.5 64-bit and a Fedora 13 64-bit. The CentOS 5.5 guest shows less memory available than configured. If, for example, I give the virtual machine 512MB of memory the guest OS only recognizes 380MB. If I give it 768MB it only recognizes 637MB, and so on. I don't have that problem on the Fedora guest - 1024MB configured, 1024MB available.

I am trying to set up samba in my CentOS virtual machine that is running on a Windows 7 host. I have found a tutorial in the How-Tos on this site but I'm not sure if they are exact and I'm paranoid about messing something up. The link to the tutorial is below. Is there anything that I should do different or anything that I should be aware of? Also, once this is set up, how do I transfer files between the two machines?

I decided to take centos 5.5 for a testdrive. I download the live cd iso and attempted to boot the system via virtualbox on my mac os 10 system. I get the blue boot screen and choosing either the graphical boot or text boot gets me no where, the blue screen remains and nothing happens). Virtualbox is able to boot other linux systems fine so I am not sure if this is a centos issue or centos/virtualbox issue.

I am trying to learn about networking and am looking to set up a mini network between three bare bones Centos machines in Virtualbox. I set up the machines with a static IP. In the Virtualbox I am using NAT and have the IPs as follows
Centos-1
IP: 10.0.2.15
Gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 10.0.2.3
Centos-2
IP: 10.0.2.16
Gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 10.0.2.3
Centos-3
IP: 10.0.2.17
Gateway: 10.0.2.2
DNS: 10.0.2.3
On all machines i can ping google.com, and yum updates, but I can not ping any other machine. It says they are unreachable. NOt really sure what to do. Any help would be much appreciated.

I want to install a Centos 5.0 Virtualbox for Windows 7 x64. Can someone please let me know where I can go to get that, because I would like to have the virtualbox to further understand how LINUX works. I have taken a course in Redhat Enterprise Linux Computing Essentials, and I enjoyed using LINUX. So that is why I am searching for a 5.0 free download of Virtualbox.

I installed centos 5.3 with last update in Virtualbox 3.06. Everything looks quite good except the unix time. It's very fast than normal. I even couldn't make ntpd work.
[Code]...
I also modified the menu.lst files as following: kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-164.el5 ro root=/dev/vg00/lv00 rhgb quiet divider=10 But it still dosen't work. how to sync the local time in the virtualbox? It looks like a bug in current kernel as other linux with newer kernel don't have such problem.

I updated my system to the latest version - 5.5. After that I could not install VirtualBox. I was thinking, trying to fix, googling... it over for hours... Finally I found the reason. VirtualBox installer searches for the source kernel at /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.17.4.el5/build, and it can not. Look into /lib/modules, I have some kernels such as:
- 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5
- 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5debug
- 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5xen
... and more old ones.
At that time, I booted on 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 kernel. But inside that directory, there is no build or source (directory/ file). Then I looked into 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5debug, and it had. So I typed: ln -s /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.17.4.el5debug/build /lib/modules/2.6.18-194.17.4.el5/build

I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

I have installed VirtualBox as per the instructions on this site, and the kernel module compiled without problem, however when I start it, it causes the user to logout!
I am using the nvidia module from the ATrpms repo if that has any bearing on the problem.
Has anyone else seen this issue?
Details:
CentOS 5.5 x86_64 running on a Dell Studio XPS 435MT with i7 920 and 6GB of RAM
VirtualBox 4.0.2 from virtualbox repo.
nvidia driver 260.

uname -r prints 2.6.18-164.el5
Yum install kernel-headers/kernel-devel gives me 2.6.18-194
When trying to run virtualbox I get an error:
Kernel Driver not installed: (rc=-1908)
Please reinstall the kernel module by running "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" as root...
/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules [OK]

Error! Your kernel headers for kernel 2.6.18-164.el5 cannot be found at /lib/modules/2.6.18-164.el5/build or /lib/modules/2.6.18-164.el5/source. [FAILED]
(Failed, trying without DKMS)
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules [FAILED]
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)
I'm assuming the setup program is using the output from uname -r to determine the kernel, the problem is the kernel sources I've got from yum do not jibe with the uname value.

Running Fedora 10, I installed CentOS 5 in Virtualbox, but I can't ping the Virtual Machine...
From within CentOS, I can ping my laptop [known as the host?] but from the laptop I can't ping the CentOS Virtual Machine. I tried turning off the firewall on both too... CentOS was able to access the internet through my laptop right away without any configurations too.
Unless someone has an idea to resolve the above, I am also wondering about something else VirtualBox-related:
To see if it was possible to get around the above issue, I was going to install another CentOS virtual machine to see if I can get them to communicate both ways [if at all], but to do so, I think I have to install CentOS AGAIN on another allocated amount of hard disk space. This will take some time, so I was wondering if anyone knew if it was possible to just create a quick duplicate of the previous installation, if you wanted 2 different virtual installations of the same OS.

VirtualBox-3.0.8_53138_rhel5-1.x86_64
Creating group 'vboxusers'. VM users must be member of that group!
No precompiled module for this kernel found -- trying to build one. Messages
emitted during module compilation will be logged to /var/log/vbox-install.log.
Compilation of the kernel module FAILED! VirtualBox will not start until this problem is fixed. Please consult /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out why the kernel module does not compile. Most probably the kernel sources are not found. Install them and execute /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup as root.

I wanted to setup an ssh server on my computer that I, along with some other people I know, could access from outside my home network. I didn't want to give others access to my computer (even if that access was limited), so I wanted to setup the server within a Virtualbox virtual machine.
STEP 1: Create the virtual machine.Create a vm with the distro of your choice. I won't explain how to do that here since there are TONS of guides online about how to do this.
STEP 2: Configure the host to send info to the vm.I found an article that explains why you have to do this and how to do it:URL...I can summarize the article by saying that the vm is hidden from other network computers by the host computer. Therefore, you have to configure the host to send information received on a particular port (any port you choose greater than or equal to 1024 as explained in the above link) to port 22 of the vm (port 22 is the default port for ssh).

I am running virtualbox on a Mac Mini Server. I would like to install Debian on it and give it an internal static IP address. E.g. 192.168.1.xxx
I am looking at all the downloads. The Mac Mini Server Snow Leopard has no CD/DVD but plenty of disk space.
It will be used as a LAMP webserver, Java, Ghostscript and pdftk but also install ISPConfig on it.
I was looking at this ISO: [URL] Is this ok?
The Mac is a 64 bit Intel based machine. If I wanted 64 bit on the VirtualBox, which 64 bit ISO should I get?

At the beginning I had 4GB on the Hard Drive and the size of the .vdi was 4GB. Lately the size of data on the disk is 15GB but the size of the .vdi is almost 32GB. Why is that? How can I pack / optimize / defrag the HD so it will be the same size of the data on the disk?

I broke down and spent some $$ on a new server for home use. I mostly do technical research and testing, plus store movies and music. My interests are mainly in the IET iscsitarget performance.
Server system consists of an AMD Phenom II 550, 8GB RAM, 1x 80GB system partition, and a LVM-vg0 software raid5, running Ubuntu 10.04 server x64.
The vg0 consists of 3 x 500GB 7200RPM SATA drives (mdadm) sliced up with 100GB for VBox VMs, one slice is an iscsitarget for a Windows 2k3 server, and another slice iscsitarget for a desktop.
With this setup, the win2k3 server is booted from a .vdi image stored on the ext4 lvm raid5 vg0. Here are the DiskTT stats.
Code:
However, with the Win2k3 server and the MS iscsi initiator I get using DiskTT:
Code:
The speeds are incredibly slow considering a non iscsi connection is screaming fast in comparison. Any ideas?
All nics are 1GB.
Here is my ietd.conf

I used to be able to access the web server I had running on my guest OS in Virtual Box from my host OS. I also had it set to the network settings of "Host Only Adapter". Then I needed to access the internet directly on the gues OS, so I changed my settings on the guest OS to "NAT" (in virtual box), and in /etc/network/interfaces, I removed the loopback stuff and the static IP I'd put in. Now no matter what I do, I cannot get it back to being accessible from the host os! I even did a completely NEW install of Ubuntu guest OS in Virtual box Guest OS: Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop Host OS: OpenSUSE 11.3 VirtualBox: 3.2.6
