Been hunting around and trying this for a few days now, without any success.I have configured a CentOS 5.5 box to start up named on boot. I have a Windows 7 machine currently going straight to the router for its DNS, that I want to point to this box instead. While I have done all the tests on the Linux box, and everything says it's working, my Windows 7 box just can't seem to contact the named service. While I am certain that my firewalls are configured correctly ( as I was able to connect through with Cyberkit on the other ports that are open ), I have even switched off the firewalls on both machines entirely to rule them out. And they still can't connect.

The issue is that my CentOS workstation is in a vlan from where the Intranet's DNS servers are unreachable. For browsing the web there is an ISA proxy server, which I presume resolves DNS for my firefox. However, wget, host, ping and aria2c fail to get any sort of DNS resolution since they're being run from command line.I have exported HTTP_PROXY value, which provides me internet access on console, but, only when I connect using IP address. It fails on name resolution.
My question is:May I redirect the DNS queries to my home PC which would be running a DNS server on a non standard port?I was thinking of putting nameserver 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf and then put iptables rule to redirect 127.0.0.1:53 UDP to a.public.ip.address:3535 UDP..I don't know if I am shooting blanks or what, I am not very much aware of this kind of setup. My main need is to provide DNS resolution to console apps.I want to utilize my company's idle bandwidth for bulk downloads, so, using proxy, SSH tunneling through my Home PC is out of question.

I have a ClarkConnect (CentOS based) box running as my home router on a RR connection. I had the DNS servers set up to use Google's DNS server. I want to change them back to the local DNS servers but I can't find an obvious/easy way to get those address short of a) reconfiguring the router's network to DHCP them (would rather not interrupt everyone) or b) calling their tech support (kill me now!). Is there a command line tool/command I can use to query the DHCP server on the external NIC to see what DNS servers it would set me up with w/o munging my existing setup?

We've got crontabs set up in /etc/cron.d to run various things, and we have them running as a specific local user.
Watching the LDAP logs, I can see the servers in question making requests for that username to the LDAP server every time cron runs, even though that user isn't in LDAP and is only local. nsswitch is configured to do "files ldap" as well.
The constant stream of LDAP queries is killing LDAP and making it impossible to log into our boxes.
why cron is querying LDAP for a local user?

I'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 on an old Pentium 4 desktop PC I have, which is not being used for much other than being a MTA, and I want to migrate this functionality onto the CentOS platform for stability (Windows is a perpetual nightmare. I partitioned a spare 20GB to experiment with, and I want to install CentOS into here to play around with first so I can move my files around between Windows and CentOS, until I'm happy all of the stuff is gone, then I can scrub the Windows partition and claim the space for CentOS.
So, I've downloaded and burned the DVD and tried to install. I start the install with no args from the main install menu, and the process goes through some probing and then comes up with the "Welcome to CentOS" menu. I go through this, and then it tries to start X Server. It fails, and falls back to text mode. I get the "Welcome to CentOS" screen again, and then proceed through it. I set my keyboard layout to UK, then this message comes up at the bottom of the screen:
"_X11TransSocketINETConnect() can't get address for localhost:6001: Temporary failure in name resolution"
then on the next line: "Cannot open display :1" If I force the install to text, by typing "linux text" at the first menu, I get about the same way through, but the install just hangs doing nothing, and no disc access to the install disc.

I'm in the process of creating local repos for our company servers (CentOS 5.5) and laptops (Fedora 13). And while the CentOS part went perfect the Fedora part is causing major trouble. But first things first, here's the setup: a central CentOS 5.5 server is running Apache2 and has a VirtualHost listening on Port 8080 for both CentOS and Fedora. The DocumentRoot for this VirtualHost is /data/repo wherein two directories, centos and fedora, reside.
This is the .repo-file for CentOS that works like a charm:
Quote:[local]
name=CentOS-$releasever - local packages for $basearch

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 with a complete LAMP installation (for local developement purpose).
Everything is OK (I installed phpMyAdmin without problems) except for one big problem: php shows 500 server internal error instead of a complete error report.
I tried editing php.ini and in-script runtime configuration but nothing changed.

Ok, I have a couple of SMTP servers for our infrastructure. They are running Postfix. I have them configured so that specific email addresses such as support@mydomain.com and billing@mydomain.com all go to a new support server that I am building with osTicket. Lets call that server SUPP1.
SUPP1 runs sendmail from the default install of CentOS 5 i386. At this point everything runs great. New emails get added into the osTicket system via a pipe in sendmail. Here's where the problem comes in. In order to accept mail, sendmail has to have the domain listed in local-host-names and the addresses in virtusertable. That works just dandy. But in doing so, sendmail believes it is the destination SMTP server for "mydomain.com". That means that I can't send mail from that server back into my normal SMTP servers. So things like the LogWatch, cron jobs, etc can't send notifications. Is there a way to work around that? For sendmail to ignore local-host-names for outbound email or something?

How do I know the reply was from caching-nameserver, master nameserver or slave nameserver in BIND DNS.? Can I trace the nameserver that replied my dns query? Like I have a master nameserver, a slave nameserver and a caching nameserver in my network. Is it possible to know that which of these servers replied my dns query? Also can i trace back that replying server exactly?

OS CentOS 5.4 I have a DNS server that is logging all named and dns requests to the chrooted named directory. By default named logs to /var/log/messages but I want to isolate all the dns queries and requests to separate files. I know I can add entries to /etc/syslog.conf to "roll" the logs and logrotate should pick them up but fuzzy as to the syntax. I don't know what "tag" to use in the first fieild. for example
# Log anything (except mail) of level info or higher.
# Don't log private authentication messages!
*.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none/var/log/messages
Here is the logging section of my named.conf
# pwd
# /var/named/chroot/etc

Since a week or 2 Nagios is constantly marking hosts (servers mainly but also a few Serial-over-IP converters) down for anything up to a few minutes. Typically, all services stay in OK status. Looking closer at a host in such state, it's status information is
CRITICAL - Packet Filtered (<IP address of host in question>)
in soft state. Sometimes services are in critical state with the host in OK status. Almost always the status information is "No route to host". Further checking shows no problems. Rarely this state lasts longer than one check interval. This started after a link was down, putting, correctly, all hosts and services on red for being unreachable. The link problems were solved within a few hours but Nagios only showed this after 2 reboots. Since then the problems has lessened in frequency gradually, from 5 to 10 of the 34 hosts being reported down at any given moment (the same for the 150-ish services monitored) to where I am now, 1 to 5 problem statuses (counting both hosts and services) and the occasional 'all green' screen. A week ago, when the problems were going a week already, Nagios updated from 3.2.0 to 3.2.1. This showed no apparent improvement.
Still, the Host Groups screen is not stable. A read or yellow status initially signified a problem to be looked at, right now it is likely a false alarm to will go away. Whenever the "packet filtered" or "no route to host" is followed up by a ping test, no problems, not even with the slightest delay or packt loss are found.

I'm using Net::Bluetooth to create an RFCOMM socket on my Linux box. I need for it to register with SDP with a specific UUID. The perl code can be viewed in this link. I am unable to make the connection from a remote device however. This remote device (my Android phone) is able to connect to other RFCOMM devices using this UUID. I would like to troubleshoot the problem, but I can't find a way to browse the LOCAL SDP records of my PC where the Perl script is running (and waiting for incoming BT connections). how to browse the SDP records on the local PC?
