CentOS 5 Server :: Dnsmasq Starts But Doesn't Reply To Queries
Sep 5, 2010
trying to configure a Centos 5.5 server (simple file server with DHCP and DNS relay). I configured and tested the config (by 'service dnsmasq configtest') of dnsmasq and I got the message 'dnsdomain:host unknown (translation of the real message : hte inconnu) and I didn't find where I could define this host ! The hostname of the server is well defined and I can see it from all Windows PC's on the LAN. dnsmasq starts (with hte same message as in configtest) but when querying DNS from PC's te.g. trying to surf the Internet), I don't get replies (3 DNS servers are also well defined and operational).
I got a mission to move our company's ns3 from one machine to another.I've installed the djbdns software on other machine, configured it(or at least I think soand if I make a "nslookup www.google.com 195.222.14.7" query from that paticular server then I get an answer straight away, but if i make the same query from local machine i get connection timed out
I am new in linux,I installed apache-tomcat on fedora.I can view all web pages on localhost:8080 but when I try to view them by server's url address from another computer, I don't get respond. Can it be a firewall problem or something else?
I am running dnsmasq in debian lenny, wvdial connecting but dnsmasq doesn't work, the /var/run/dnsmasq/resolv.conf file is empty this is /var/log/syslog:
The /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf is ok:
I got a CentOS server setup as a dhcp server using dnsmasq. I followed this guide more or less: [URL] So, the problem seems to be concerning the DNS server on the clients. In windows I get the "limited connectivity" icon for the network, and when I select troubleshoot it says the DNS server does not respond. Issuing 'ipconfig /all' clearly shows the IP of the CentOS machine as the DNS server, which should be correct, yes?
ETH0 is working as WAN connection and that works great.. no problem with the WAN connection at all on the CentOS machine. ETH1 has the IP 192.168.0.1 and mask 255.255.255.0 When starting eth1, it sometimes says that it can't start eth1 because the IP 192.168.0.1 is already in use.. but that is most certainly not the case. Maybe there's some kind of issue here that messes with the DNS? What's mind boggling is that it works great on a linux machine (dhcp client) and on a windows xp machine. but it does not work on the windows 7 laptop and a vista laptop and a pda device.
I am bit new to Linux and have setup caching-only name server with Centos 5.5. when i do dig server, it provide resolutions. but when i use the server IP as DNS on my windows client, it says, "connection refused" on the NSlookup output. (IP table didn't enable) My server Ip is 192.168.1.253 and bellow is the configuration of "/var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf"
I recently moved my site to a new server (Apache 2, PHP5, MySQL5). The site is an Invision based forum. Every few posts / topics it just hangs. The data has been written because if you stop and reload, the post / thread is there. I thought it was a write issue initially, but nope. So, the data is written but the page load never completes. It doesn't leave the page where the data has been input.
Whats the best way to trouble shoot this issue? The only thing I have done recently is reduce my MySQL timeouts, but I can't see that being an issue as the values are still big enough and there are no mentions of timeouts in the MySQL log. (For the record there is nothing in PHP's error log either)
I have checked my server-status. It all looked ok, but I have a suspicion I was hitting my ServerLimit, so I doubled that. Also enabled my Keepalives. Will keep an eye on it.
Some additional info;
1. Apache is throwing seg faults, but enabling core dumps does not produce them.
2. I have tried disabling the modules in apache but it just stops things from working.
3. I fear it may actually be DNS related. If I watch Live Headers in Firefox, absolutely nothing happens during this 'hanging' period. After that, the responses come back fairly promptly.
I'm installing OpenLDAP on a VSP server, CentOS 5 with Plesk at 1and1. I've tested the slapd.conf file with slaptest and it returns ok. I've tried to start ldap with /sbin/service ldap start and it says it is ok and starts. But if I try to run ldapadd I get an error message saying that it could not contact the ldap server. I check the status with /sbin/service ldap status and it show that it is not running. I can do /sbin/service ldap start, it will say it started and turn around and check the status and it will show that it is not running. Would something in Plesk be killing ldap as soon as it starts? I installed OpenLDAP via yum and have been following directions found in a couple of ldap guides.
But then, as I have read is a better option, I use xinetd with the following configuration:
Code: service vnc-1024x768x16 { protocol = tcp socket_type = stream wait = no
[Code].....
In fact, I was considering that the problem was with xinetd, but I have other services setted up with it (telnet & ftp for example) and I can use them correctly.
So now I'm lost with this, what else am I not considering with VNC service through xinetd? Where can I find logs or useful information to get a clue about this problems?
ubuntu: 10.04dnsmasq: 2.52-1ubuntu0.1I've installed dnsmasq and it is performing DNS duties correctly. I'd like to limit access to the dnsmasq service to a specific address or interface. I've tried adding variations and combinations of the following to /etc/dnsmasq.conf:
All our CentOS servers sync to a windows domain time server and we're migrating to a new CentOS time server. however in testing the setup with the clients I get the following
# ntpdate 10.10.31.211 16 Mar 09:20:46 ntpdate[2646]: no server suitable for synchronization found
checking to see if I can at least query...
# ntpdate -q 10.10.31.211 server 10.10.31.211, stratum 16, offset 17579.121921, delay 0.02591 16 Mar 09:08:07 ntpdate[2606]: no server suitable for synchronization found
I've got Tyan S4989 with gigabit ethernet controller Intel Corporation 82571EB. Sometimes server starts drop packets and doesn't respond to any connections and all logs doesn't contain any errors. iptables and SELinux switched off on CentOS 5.3(2.6.18-128.1.6).
I try to forward all the network traffic on specific port from my VPS to home PC.The problem is that I have dynamic IP at home so I've installed Dynamic Update Client (DUC) from no-ip.com.I also use 'redir' software on Centos VPS to redirect the traffic and everything works fine till my ISP change the IP of my home PC.Does Centos cache DNS queries by default (nscd is not running)? Is there a some way/software that will periodically check if the IP of particular domain has changed and update accordingly.
Since latest large update to CentOS 5.3, which also upgraded to 5.4, I have problem with dnsmasq. CentOS is real server on real hardware (not virtual). I use dnsmasq as dhcp server as usual. On hardware startup or reboot, these lines are included in /var/log/messages
Nov 2 19:06:16 server avahi-daemon[2965]: New relevant interface eth0.IPv4 for mDNS. Nov 2 19:06:16 server avahi-daemon[2965]: Joining mDNS multicast group on interface eth0.IPv4 with address 192.168.0.1.
I did a yum update this morning that included a dnsmasq update. Subsequently, for an unrelated reason, I restarted dnsmasq, but it failed because /etc/dnsmasq.d didn't exist. It looks like my /etc/dnsmasq.conf file now includes "conf-dir=/etc/dnsmasq.d" at the end. Since dnsmasq was starting and I didn't remove dnsmasq.d, I assume this line was added by the update. Commenting the line resolves the issue.
An alternative hypothesis, given that I don't really know what the state of /etc/dnsmasq.conf and /etc/dnsmasq.d/ was before the update, might be that the directory did exist, but was removed by the update. I find this the least likely of my 2 stated hypotheses. (There are other hypotheses, but I think they are even less likely). Am I correct is concluding the conf-dir line was added by the update? If so, shouldn't the updated RPM create the directory during install?
I run an centos server. From the console I can ping google.com and get a reply. But when I ping another address say xyz.com, the IP address is resolved (11.22.33.44) but there is no reply. In the same network in our office from my desktop I ping [URL] and there is a reply.I turned of the firewall but still the same problem.
I am currently running the latest version of Bind, and for some completely unknown reason I can NOT get queries to work for PTR records. All queries to the servers for reverse name lookup get query denied:
Using domain server: Name: 66.150.173.1 Address: 66.150.173.1#53 Aliases:
Host 27.173.150.66.in-addr.arpa not found: 5(REFUSED)
And it shows in my logs:
I am at my wits ends with the piece of crap. Can anyone shine some light on why this damn Bind install won't respond to these queries?
I have internal-only email server that has internal BIND9 running. Thought it only has its IP address defined in /etc/resolv.conf, it is still resolving outside addresses.
GUys im trying to setup a linux router w/in our network here in school, and i was using a fc13 as my linux router, i already setup iptables for linux masquerading.. i have a 20 winxp client connected to the said router with an ip of 192.168.0.1, on each client i manually configured all of the clients ip address.. i was wondering if i could use a dhcp server to ease the manual configuration.., i already installed a dhcp server. Note im a newbie, thus dhcp server will also provide dns resolution to winxp clients??,, on some thread that i read if the client is linux.. you will just need to add nameserver to the /etc/resolv.conf for each linux clients.. the clients that im using here is winxp, i was wondering if i could setup the server to distribute dns & also a dynamic ip to all the clients..w/c 1 is better?? DCHP server or dnsmasq??
I am using DNSMASQ on a Debian 5.0.6. server. I configured DNSMASQ as DHCP server, and want it to answer local DNS requests. However, I am unable to use hostnames, and am forced to use IP addresses when pinging, opening a ssh shell on a remote server, opening a remote desktop to a windows system etcedtera.
Because I use DHCP, I can not hard code the ip addresses in the hosts file. How do I configure DNSMASQ so that i can use hostnames for computers who get their IP addresses from DHCP.
I've set up a very simple net with a dhcp + dns server using dnsmasq. It works but the server itself cant resolv clients names. Clients do resolv without any problem my /etc/dnsmasq.conf
How often are dns queries sent? Assume I want to connect to a ssh server, will I send one dns-query in order to do that or do I send multiple during my connection? What if I request web-pages, do I send a query only when I enter a site or will I send queries every time I visit a new page on that site?
I'm asking since I'm considering getting an account at dyn.com (the standard account for $30/yr) and it comes with 600 000 queries per month (which is way more than I expect to get but knowing exactly what it means is always good).
Is there a way to run queries against a Microsoft sql server from linux? Here is what I would like to do. When I create apps that us db back end I would like to quickly check results of my queries. so if I could do something like "select * form Orders" from the terminal or another app that would be great.
