Server :: Open File Limit On Debian Squeeze ( 6.0.1)?

Apr 28, 2011

I have a problem with open file limit. The software I'm installing claims "Open file limit (ulimit -H -n) too low (1014), need at least 6311" but when I check the linit I get the following

Code:
# uname -a
Linux server 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Mar 7 21:35:22 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Debian :: Cannot Open XML In Squeeze

Nov 10, 2010

I can only open xml files with iceweasel.

I cannot open using gedit. When I try to open gedit crashes. I installed xml tools plugin in edit but is crashes like before. When I open plugins dialogue in gedit preferences I can activate any of the plugins available, except xml tools plugin. When I click on it to tick the box and to activate it it turns to gray. I installed bluefish which is claimed to be the right tool for such work. Although it opens the xml file, it displays all the lines like each one is typed the previous. All lines in one line but not continuously. Just the one upon the others!!!

I'm not sure, but I think that I may have removed some necessary files: when I first installed my Debian Squeeze system, I totally removed gnome-desktop-environment and then reinstalled gnome-core. I removed whatever supposed useless and to keep the phenomenal orphaned packages I gave an "aptitude keep all".

Server :: Concurrent File Read Limit

Jul 12, 2011

More of a "Knowledge" question... Is their a limit to the number of reads a single file can take? Say for example I have a file named config.xml in an htdocs directory and a XMLReader function from PHP reads some value(s) out of this file for every connection of Apache or NGinx. Now suppose my site receives a gigantic spike in traffic (but Apache stays opertational through it all)... Is their a point at which the underlying system would simply not be able to open+read config.xml anymore??

Server :: Limit The Suphp User Memory Limit?

May 12, 2010

I have a VPS server with 512 MB memory. The php.ini is set so script memory limit = 16 MB. However, I have noticed in my top report, instances like the following:

Quote:

5484 coldclim 25 0 46476 32m 5920 R 0.0 6.4 0:00.93 php

The bold number of 6.4 is the % of sever memory this process is using. 6.4 % of 512 MB of memory is about 32 MB of memory, so it appears that this isn't being limited by php.ini. Am I correct? This leads to the next question: Is there some way to limit the amount of memory a single suphp process can use? (Basically, something like the setting in php.ini which limits suphp processes in the same way.)

Debian Multimedia :: Squeeze (Xfce4 Archiver) Can't Open Files?

Dec 23, 2010

This is about the Squeeze (0.2.3-8) archiver in Debian Squeeze. I may be missing a dependency, but is Squeeze incapable of opening files inside archives? I created a generic archive with "tar -cvf arxiv.tar file01.txt" and Squeeze segfaults when I try to double click to open the file (file01.txt) stored in the archive (arxiv.tar).

Also, after experimenting with Squeeze on the command line, it seems the "-n" option works, but results in an orphaned gui window; the "-x" option will only extract to a directory which already exists (which is o.k., but should be documented); and the "-d" option doesn't follow the general syntax in the man page "squeeze [OPTION...] [archive name]", which isn't bad, but sure does make it unnecessarily cumbersome to use, and also, the gui runs (blinks for a split section) for no clear reason. Now it would be silly to use command line squeeze over tar, but the man page for Squeeze begins with: "Squeeze - modern and advanced archive manager for Xfce".

I would like a gui archiver/extracter to use with Xfce4 without all the QA problems. Unless I'm doing something really wrong, this software doesn't seem to be ready for release at all, and the upstream version has not changed in a long time.

Debian :: Cannot Join Server To AD With Samba After Upgrade To Squeeze

Sep 15, 2010

A very strange thing happened to me today after upgrading a Lenny server to Squeeze. All seems to be working great except for the fact that I cannot join the server to our domain (made a work copy of the virtual machine holding Debian, upgraded that, renamed and changed IP).

The problem I'm having is related to Samba as far as I can tell. On the Lenny server(s) I have the 'net' command to join a server to a domain but not on the upgraded version (Squeeze). It just says command not found and there's indeed no 'net' in /usr/bin where it's supposed to be.

I imagine that something went wrong upgrading Samba although the rest works, the daemons are running, kerberos works (kinit, klist), and so on, I only miss the net command.

Is there a way to install that separately or which package do I have to reinstall (samba-common, sambafs, ...)?

I have other servers (clean install and upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze) that do have the command in /usr/bin. Can I just copy it over from one to another or do I have to remove and reinstall Samba all together?

Ubuntu Servers :: Is It Safe To Raise The Open Files Limit

Mar 7, 2011

Running an nginx webserver on Ubuntu 10.04 lts In the process of trying to optimize the mysql, various tuning scripts keep telling me to raise the table cache. But they also say the table cache should stay below 1/3 of the open files limit. I can raise that in mysql, but I guess you're not supposed to raise it above the OS's open files max. So I'd like to raise it (found what appear to be solid instructions here: [URL] But... Post by Kees here says it's not safe to raise it [URL] at least, not safe under certain conditions. But I'm not clear on what the conditions are. is it safe or not? If I knew how to just raise it for mysql, I'd do that. But as you can probably see, I'm pretty new to all this. Don't want to wreck my server. (my current limit is the default 1024... wd like to go to 204

Debian Configuration :: DHCP Server In Squeeze Appears Broken?

Dec 3, 2010

Alright, I edited "/etc/default/isc-dhcp-server" and set "eth0" as the only thing listed for interfaces. I also have the code below in "/etc/dhcp/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf" and I even copied it to "/etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf" for good measure, and I can't get the DHCP server to start. As an intermediate to advanced user, I am under the high assumption that it is broken since everything in the docs has been set. I have googled for two days and cannot find a fix, so before I report it as a broken package, would somebody with more experience with the package chime in?

Configuration file:
subnet 10.0.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
option domain-name-servers 10.0.0.254;
option broadcast-address 10.0.0.255;

[Code].....

I hid my wireless setup because it contains my WiFi network info including key. This box is routing, doing DNS resolution, and firewalling just fine. I just cannot get the friggin' DHCP server to start no matter what I try.

Oh, and is it safe to delete "/etc/dhcp" or "/etc/dhcp3"? They appear to be duplicates of each other...

Debian Configuration :: Dhcpd Server Behavior Seems To Have Changed In Squeeze?

Aug 9, 2011

I've been using dhcpd for address assignments to PCs for a very long time with no issues. I recently upgraded from lenny to squeeze and now dhcpd seems to have new behavior which I can't seem to change. Here's what I want to do. First, I have a simple situation and don't want to get involved with dynamic DNS updates. I have host statements for each of my PCs and a range statement for cases where I install a new device and don't yet have a host statement for it. Previously, I could discover the ethernet address for the new device from the dhcpd log and add a host statement with an address of my choosing for the new device.

I'd then restart dhcpd and do something like reboot the device or issue an ipconfig /renew statement on the new PC. What would happen is that the old dynamically assigned IP address would be NAKed and the device would do a DHCPDISCOVER, etc. and get the new IP address I specified in the dhcpd.conf host statement. In squeeze, this no longer works. The client asks for the old address it got dynamically and the server just says yes. I can't seem to find a way to get it to NAK the dynamic address and use the new address I've specified in the host statement. I'd appreciate any enlightenment on how this is now supposed to be done. Here's my simplified dhcpd.conf file:

authoritative;
log-facility daemon;
ddns-update-style none;

[code]....

Note that the address here was assigned based on a previous range statement and isn't consistent with the above config file.

Server :: Cannot Login To FTP (proftpd) With A Single User On Debian Squeeze?

Jul 19, 2011

So I've been trying to get a single user to login to an FTP site I've created using proftpd and I haven't had much luck. So check this out: this only applies to one user, I can "su" to the user account so I know the password is set, and I am even able to SSH into the box as this user. This totally eliminates a bad/incorrect password and the server IS accepting connections on port 21 because I can FTP as other users. I've ruled out the client because I tried locally and using a command promptWinders but still no luck. This is what I'm seeing in the logs when I attempt to connect using an FTP client.

General :: Limit On File Size - Doesn't Allow User To Create File Which Are Greater Than 100Kb

Jun 13, 2011

I was just testing specifying limit on file size to a user and have added the following to /etc/security/limits.conf bob soft fsize 100 This basically should have said not to allow bob to create anyfile greater than 100Kb in size.

But the interesting thing is, if bob already has any file which is greater than 100Kb in size, it even doesn't allow to log him into the system both from console and SSH. Also nothing is logged in logs.. How do I configure it so that, bob can login to the system even though he has any file greater than 100Kb (but doesn't allow him to create file which are greater than 100Kb) ??
