Debian :: PACKAGE MANAGER Crash - Stuck - Dead - How To Reset Or Clear Repositories

May 15, 2011

The package manager is scrambled in my Ubuntu 11.04. It started with the repositories list being scrambled with multiple entries. Now when the Package Manager is launched it just accesses the hard drive forever. I did give it a half an hour just in case so it clearly stuck in a loop of some kind.

What I'd like to know is: Is there some way to reset, clear, turn off or de-select the added Repositories list from the command line (terminal.) This seems to be the only way since the Package Manager gets stuck. Keep in mind that I'm only slightly competent with Linux and have no idea where the Debian Package Manager data is located or how it works. If I go poking around without at least some guidance I may make things worse.

The problem seems to be spreading. Got stuck again while saving this message. Turned off the system, rebooted to recovery mode and did a file system check. Okay for now. Switching to clean OS on other partition.

I'll check for answers there but it's only Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd very much prefer to have 11.04 working and not have an effectively dead partition and don't want to loose everything on it with a re-format and 2 day re-install process (no installation disk.)

Networking :: Netstat - Dropped Packets Under IP

Feb 13, 2009

I have question regarding netstat? When performing a "netstat -s" I receive the following information regarding dropped packets under IP:

IP:
93978695 total packets received
0 forwarded
0 incoming packets discarded
79472157 incoming packets delivered
65235033 requests sent out
29527 outgoing packets dropped

However if I run a "netstat -i" I have no dropped packets whatsoever: (apologies for the table format):

Networking :: Netstat Displaying Wrong Process Name/id?

Feb 9, 2010

While running some live tests last week I saw an odd situation where netstat appeared to be displaying the wrong PID and process name for TCP connections. I'm trying to figure out if this is just a strange netstat bug or if it could indicate something odd is happening with our software.

We have a main program which establishes a number of connections, including connecting to a JMS server and listening/accepting a TCP connection. The main program also creates a child process which it uses to communicate with another server. On at least three occasions we saw a situation we saw netstat reporting all the expected TCP connections (correct ip/port for both source and destination), however the child process, instead of the main, was listed for the PID. The main process was still running but netstat no longer reported any TCP connections established by the main program. The main program continued to function correctly, the JMS communication continued to work and we believe the other TCP connection was functioning correctly despite the program supposedly not having any TCP connections.

I'm wondering if this could simply be a bug and/or obscure functionality of netstat that I don't understand which would cause netstat to report the child process as 'owning' the parents TCP connections. I don't know how this would happen or why the parent would continue functioning despite the problem otherwise.

Networking :: (Netstat -pl) Foreign Host Can Connect From Any Port (IPP)

May 12, 2010

Netstat has always confused me. I ype netstat -pl and get this:

Code:
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State PID/Program name
tcp 0 0 localhost:ipp *:* LISTEN 1476/cupsd
tcp 0 0 localhost:postgresql *:* LISTEN 13816/postgres
tcp 0 0 *:44223 *:* LISTEN 1288/sshd
tcp6 0 0 localhost:ipp [::]:* LISTEN 1476/cupsd
tcp6 0 0 localhost:postgresql [::]:* LISTEN 13816/postgres
tcp6 0 0 [::]:44223 [::]:* LISTEN 1288/sshd
udp 0 0 *:bootpc *:* 1267/dhclient

I assume that *:* means that any foreign host can connect from any port, but then what does [::]:* mean? and localhost:ipp... what port is ipp? Shouldn't ports be numeric?

Networking :: (Netstat -s) Bits Or Data Packets Transferred Counts?

Sep 15, 2009

Using netstat I can get a lot of network related information which is pretty useful at times. But when I use for example 'netstat -s' it gives me a lot of counts for bits transferred or data packets transferred etc. Now one thing I am not sure of is that for how long those counts will keep rolling and when will they get reset (when I restart the machine?, when I restart the network services? Or if there is some kinda threshold set on it?) How exactly netstat counts those things (I mean what is the source of those counts for netstat).

CentOS 5 :: CMOS Password Reset Possible From Within It?

Oct 7, 2010

I have a lost password on an Intel DG33TL motherboard which I guess is only resetable by shorting the right jumpers on the board. I have two questions regarding that:

1- Is there any way I can reset the CMOS password through the CentOS? Or is that a thing of old motherboards where one could reset them through the OS?

2- Currently I have two hard drives installed in Raid1 (mirroring each other) through the motherboard RAID (not the through any RAID card or through CentOS). RAID was made prior to installing CentOS. So, would resetting the jumper mess up the whole RAID? I don't want trouble and I can leave without the password but it's good to know if need arises.

CentOS 5 :: Reset Eth0 Without Reboot

Jul 18, 2011

after the 5.6 update I started loosing the connection to my router. Having had issues with routers before I assumed that the router was on its way out. However I happended to have a laptop handy the other day and thought I would give it a try (after eth0 went down), router was fine(same cable too). I have tried bringing eth0 up/down (gui and ifdown/ifup) and restarted the network(gui and cli) but it will not get an ip(as I recall it does recognize that the cable is connected). If I do a reboot, eth0 comes up immediately. The log just shows repeated dhcp requests. I tried a dhclient -r but it errors out with no link found. It has been doing this since 5.6 came out (roughly once a day) so I THINK that it is not a hardware issue(should have died completely by now if it was). PSU voltages show stable and unchanged. It does use the forcedeath driver. 5.6-64bit fully updated.

I have changed them so that they read
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 64 Nov 4 13:56 ttyS0

But every time I initialize the dev board the permissions switch back to the original state. I have found lots about preventing the permissions switching back upon reboot but that doesn't appear to be the problem.

CentOS 5 :: Reject-with Tcp-reset In OUTPUT Chain With Kernel 164.x

Nov 6, 2009

I usually have something like

iptables -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 113 -j REJECT --reject-with tcp-reset

in my firewall near the top, as I dont want the servers to generate ident requests and I don't want services (mail and ftp...) stalling when waiting for ident replies on clients with ident port filtered. This worked fine until the 164 kernel series.

Tested both 2.6.18-164.2.1.el5 and 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5. The rule gets matched, but the rst is never returned to the application so it stalls in every case. Booted back to 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 and it works like a charm. I see no netfilter related patches in the 164 series that weren't present in 128.
