CentOS 5 Networking :: DNS Lookup Fails On Using Terminal
Oct 12, 2010
I have a CentOS 5.5 desktop at work. I can browse the web (we are behind a proxy of course), I can use Yumex perfectly. In a word, every GUI has DNS working correctly. But, as soon as I use a terminal, either within a X session (xterm, konsole...) or in a tty, any DNS lookup will fail. So for instance, yum does not work as it complains about not being able to find the servers, wget doesn' t work... And if I try a nslookup, I get a NX Domain Fail. I feel like the servers are not doing recursion research when using command line nslookups, even if I "force" the option (adding it even if it is the default). Of course, resolv.conf is OK, host.conf as well...

I'm running a fresh install on an intel i7 system on an asus p6t deluxe v2 motherboard with the onboard NIC (Marvell Technology pci-e). I know the NIC is working as when I boot into the onboard OS that Asus provides (Asus Express Gate SSD)I have a working net connection.Booting up CentOS hangs at determining IP information for eth0 and eventually fails with the following error:PING xxx.170.30.1 from xxx.170.31.231 eth0: 56(84) bytes of data---xxx.170.30.1 ping statistics ---4 packets transmitted, o received, +3 errors, 100% packet loss, time 2999ms, pipe 3 failed.

I have the following bind9 configuration, and I'm trying to resolve reverse lookup IP address to name.
$ttl 38400
mydomain.org.INSOAmyhosting.com. (
1243281304
10800
[code]...
** server can't find 1.2.3.4.in-addr.arpa: NXDOMAIN
Is my PTR wrong, or what do I need to have the reverse lookup working ?
Note: I replace real IP by 1.2.3.4, same for my domain name.

I have a problem in Eclipse for accessing update sites (for plugins). I am behind a NTLM proxy. Strangely, this proxy asks for a password while in Linux but not when in Windows
To get around this annoying password issue, I already setup a working cntlmd proxy. I can use this proxy for mounting a remote DavFS2 share, for example. But the issue I have with Eclipse seems to involve proxy configuration. So I decided a transparent proxy could solve this issue. I installed tinyproxy on top of cntlmd, and added the following rule to the firewall:
Code:
iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to 8888
Now, I can configure Firefox for direct access to the Internet, and display a web site only if I give this web site's IP instead of its name! I surmise that it's because when configured for direct access, Firefox performs DNS lookups using the local (intranet) DNS, instead of squeezing its lookups through the proxy and accessing a broader DNS (I wonder which). How can I make all DNS lookups go transparently through the transparent proxy?

For a while now I've got a problem when surfing the internet. Everythings fine for let's say 15 minutes and then all of a sudden it takes about 1 minute to load a -random- page, once it has loaded, everthing's fine again. Transmission does not seem to have this problem. I'll double check this. Looking thru the forum I found the following "solutions". None of which has worked for me up to now:
- disable ipv6 in firefox
- set method under network manager to "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only" and use google or OpenDNS dns servers
- change resolv.conf (comparable to the second one I guess)

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 in a dual boot environment on a spare laptop( Dell Inspiron 6000 ) I have other machines using older distro's of Ubuntu but do not have them all on line... utility costs are ridiculous here..anyway.... I found some optimization tips for Firefox and those have been done and I did find earlier information about this or a very similar problem but all the suggestions mentioned there are already in place here network wide.. Basically what is happening is this: When a web site is opened from the browser in the lower left hand of the screen it displays "Looking up www.google.com" or what ever url was entered.
I know Win is not a good comparison and I haven't gotten any additional Ubuntu boxes on line yet but Win seem unaffected by this.
Any recommendations as to what I should try next?? I have DNS server information stored in the router using Google Public DNS and Open DNS as a backup and uPNP is disabled. Seems like the program (Ubuntu) is plenty fast even on this Celeron based machine but the time taken to look up DNS data is a lot slower than anticipated.

I've got 2 domains:
[URL]
This is how I've configured my resolv.conf file:
[URL]
When I run the host command, it can resolve machines in one.domain.com using both hostname and ipaddress. But when I run the host command for machines in two.domain.com, it only works for hostnames but not ip addresses. The result for ip addresses is:
Host 100.3.2.1.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
Why doesn't it try the 2nd nameserver in the resolv.conf file when resolving by ip adddress? Reverse pointers are configured for each machine in their respective domain dns servers. O/S is Oracle VM Server 2.2.1 (similar to Red Hat). Kernel is 2.6.18-128.2.1.4.37.el5xen.

I have two CentOS 5 servers that I'm trying to transfer files between. They're on the same LAN switch, same subnet and everything. So far, everything I've attempted has failed, but scp still exits with a return code of 0. It only displays a line of *** and exits immediately. It's almost as if the file transfers instantly, but no file actually gets copied. Here is the verbose output from scp:
scp -v kickstart.tar ****@192.168.xxx.xxx:/home/****
Executing: program /usr/bin/ssh host 192.168.xxx.xxx, user ****, command scp -v -t /home/****

I have been running into network issues lately with my CentOS 5 (installed on AMD Athlon X2 - 64 bit machine about 2 years ago). It was able to connect to the network fine until yesterday when I installed more memory into the machine restarted it.
Upon restart, the boot up was paused at 'Determining IP information for eth0' step for a while and booted with out connecting to the network. I tried restarting the network (/sbin/service network restart), but this is the error message I continuously get: Determining IP information for eth0...PING xxx.1.226.1 (xxx.1.226.1) from xxx.1.226.83 eth0: 56(84) bytes of data

I have a:
# lspci | grep Ether
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 03)
Looks like the r8169 module that gets loaded is not a valid choice for this chipset. The main error that I see is:
r8169: eth0: link down
ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
I have verified the cable and it's good the windows machine next door is fine using it without packet loss.
The system is a HP Desktop, just CentOS 5.5 loaded on it (base, with no updates).

I am familiar with windows 2008 cluster servers, and I just started testing with centos cluster. I am creating a simple 2-node cluster, for a simple ping test.
Node 1: 10.0.0.1
Node 2: 10.0.0.1
Virtual ip: 10.0.0.10
So far, I can ping a virtual ip, and manually relocate it between the nodes, but I didn't figure out, how to do this automatically. So this is my question: How can I setup the cluster, to it automatically failover the a service to another node case one node fails?

I'm trying to install a dual booting machine with OpenSUSE v11.1 32bit and CentOS v5.2 64bit. I installed OpenSUSE first and allowed it to install and configure grub in the MBR and after that I wanted to proceed with CentOS v5.2. The installation went fine with two notable exceptions:- when I had to configure grub installation parameters, CentOS offered me only 2 solutions: either install it on the MBR of the first hard disk or not installing it at all. Other distributions are more flexible allowing you to install it in the boot sector of the root partition for example. Because I didn't want to ruin the existent grub onfiguration, I reluctantly accepted not to install it for CentOS assuming that I could manually configure the entry later in grub's menu.lst file.
- when I was presented with the options for software components installation, I've clicked on virtualization category/function because I intend to use the machine as a VMware host. There was no guidance on screen at that point and I blindly assumed that by choosing the virtualization function I would get necessary tools and drivers that will help me further on. It seems that this was a wrong move as you can see it below.
After completing the installation, I tried to search for a template or guiding on how the menu entry in menu.lst should look like but the grub directory was empty, not surprisingly because I've told CentOS earlier not to install it. Using the files in the /boot directory from the CentOS installation I tried to improvise a menu entry but it's not working. The boot stops with famous Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format. Using the file command to check what kind of files I'm trying to load as kernels I'm getting :
marte:~ # file /mnt/vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.el5xen
/mnt/vmlinuz-2.6.18-92.el5xen: gzip compressed data, from Unix, last modified: Tue Jun 10 19:20:51 2008, max compression

I am trying to run though the qmailrocks setup on a centos 5.5 and I am running into an issue when trying to telnet to port 25:
telnet localhost 25
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.
Everything else seems to be working (telnet to 110), and I turned off the firewall entirely, but I still cannot telnet to port 25. I also get a blank error within squirrelmail when attempting to send mail out (ERROR:Message not sent. Server replied: ). I apologize for not going directly to the qmailrocks forum, but they are currently closed down (due to lack of funds). I also am a newbie, so I apologize for the lack of needed information. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know what information you would need.

Fresh guest install of current as of changelog dated 16-Feb-2011, in to VirtualBox 4.0.4 (13.1 x86_64 host).
1. About 6 of the icons normally residing in the top half of Settings Manager are missing (names are their and functions work). Selecting 'Appearance -> Icons' and re-selecting the one choice available restores one, the rest remain MIA.
2. Default xfce Terminal launch fails with error <????> Re-selecting the default 'Preferred Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal -> Xfce Terminal' has no effect. 'Properties' shows the usual 'exo-open --launch TerminalEmulator'.
Setting 'Preferred Applications' to 'X Terminal' launches an xterm successfully as expected.

I've been comparing the current Slackware 32 bit versus 64 bit, and I've noticed that the 64 bit version is as slow as dialup for domain name lookup.
The 32 bit version is very fast to find websites after a mouse click, whereas the 64 bit version takes forever looking up URLs. (using Firefox)
All the other 64 bit Linuxes seem to be the same way, not just Slackware.
The /etc/resolve.conf file is the same for 32 or 64 bit Slackware, but something is not right. The 32 bit version has a /etc/dhcpc directory, but not the 64 bit version.
Could this be causing the extreme slowdown?
It's really very irritating when the rest of the system is blazing fast.

I have tried every variation I can think of to get an 'at' to rm a file after a certain amount of time.
echo 'rm -f /var/www/media/images/tempProducts/XYZ.png' | at now + 2 minutes
In php:
$apCommand = "echo 'rm -f " . $sTempName . "' | at now + 2 minutes";
exec ($apCommand);
I have:
- pasted the command into the command line as root and it works fine so it seems to be rights related -- rm gets scheduled and the file gets deleted after 2 minutes
- tried every variation of sudo within the statement including making sure that apache is listed in sudoers
- chmod to 777
- chown to apache
The rm command does get scheduled into the 'at' queue but the rm never removes the file.
at -c (without adding sudo to the 'at' statement)
#!/bin/sh
# atrun uid=48 gid=48
# mail apache 0
