What is the long term support plan for CentOS 5.2 (or indeed 5.3)? We are interested in changing our machines away from Scientific Linux 4.5, because support is ending for that OS within 12 months. So we need to make sure that a new OS choice is going to have support for a number of years.

Most of the time I'm asked to deploy a generic Windows server, install a few basic applications and if needed some other applications like Nagios or Zabbix. My question is for long term support, or patching should I be focusing on deploying with repositories to install applications or compile from source? In the Windows world you can patch and update from Windows Update, but is there problems using 3rd party repositories for future updates? Would one of these locations go off line?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Centos 5.3. I ran no updates, performed no installs, nor changed any configuration immediately prior to this issue. My problem is this: when I run the command startx (default runlevel 3), it is a long time (5-10 minutes) before Gnome startx, and once it does start applications will not run. Also, when I try to use sudo (from any environment, even ssh), it is a long time (5-10) before the command is executed.
I cannot say for sure, but it seems like this is an intermittent problem. Sometimes X takes a long time to start, but once it starts it will launch programs. Sometimes X takes a long time to launch, but once it starts it will only launch certain programs. Though presently X always takes a long time to start, and I cannot successfully launch any programs.
A while back a had a similar problem to this (x taking long time to start, sudo taking long time to execute) and it ended up being a DNS problem. Unfortunately, I cannot remember exactly what it was and I stupidly did not document it. Maybe this is also DNS related, I don't know.
I don't know what log files to look at for problems with X, Gnome, and sudo taking a long time to start.
I am trying to install 5.3 using net install disc, where it hangs for over 30 minutes trying to retrieve stage2.img. Second time. After first time and waiting over 25 minutes, I tried Debian net install on another box, and it's done with installation long ago, while this one is still hanging (and from the looks of it I doubt it will continue).
1. Network is good, the box pings, network parameters are good, Debian worked flawlessly with same parameters
2. It did pull all it needed before stage2.img
3. Plenty of RAM in the box, over 3 GB
4. The box needs no additional drivers (except newer version of kernel as vanilla still doesn't have a complete support for Intel DP43TF board), distro has them all

View 3 Replies View RelatedI try to set up a 5 nodes cluster and a shared Coraid Storage with conga but it fails with "Shared Storage Support" checked.The message is:'A problem occurred when installing packages: Packages of set "Clustered Storage" are not present in available repository' and it is shown under every node on the next sceen after I submit.The pc where conga runs is on the same subnet (192.168.xxx.xxx) and it has the same /etc/hosts of the other nodes.In that pc runs a proxy too and the nodes go out through it (that pc has 2 NICs)Every node (2.6.18-128.1.14.el5-xen-x86_64) is patched whith the last yum update (this morning) the same is for the pc (2.6.18-128.1.14.el5).Every node has 4 NICs , 2 NICc towards the storage the others in bonding towards the WAN.Every node is exactly alike, they have been installed with the ks.cfg generated from the first node and they all have the support for Clustering, Virtualization, and Clustered Storage.

My work requires me to have a lot of postscript files. Hence i have elaborate names for easy identification. For example --- AP-1_Jul-Ctrl-noEqSA_bg25C_precip,U250-150_xy.ps. I am unable to open them using evince. I get a blank evince screen with loading written on it. The same file named as 1.ps opens in a jiffy. As of now evince quickly opens pdf files with long names. But i would not like to convert ps to pdf.
Even kghostview does not open these long-named files.

I'm running the latest CentOS 5.4 with kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 (x86_64).When I boot the machine, it gets to the udev starting bit, hangs for like 5 minutes, then prints a message "Failed, will continue in the background." Then it boots OK after that.I tried booting again with the kernel option (from grub) "udevdebug", and what I saw when it tried again was a million messages saying it was waiting for "/sbin/pam_console_apply" to return, but I guess it wasn't returning... ;) Again, after 5 minutes, it gave up and finished booting.Now, this host is an LDAP client.
I figured that may have something to do with it as it is likely that pam_console_apply tries to make an LDAP lookup, which is wrong, because networking hasn't even started yet. If I disable LDAP (by removing ldap lookups in nsswitch.conf), I get no pam_console_apply errors from udev and it boots quickly. But that's a bummer, I need LDAP on this box, and I don't want my boot time to be 7-8 minutes. ;)Presumably before, when LDAP was enabled and it waited 5 minutes and then notified me that it will "continue in the background", that it was eventually successful after networking started. LDAP otherwise works fine on this box, just like all the other servers we have.This is new behavior, I've not seen it with CentOS 5.3 and below. Has anyone seen this? Any hints on what I can do to avoid it? It seems like a pam bug or something, but I don't know for sure.
I have been using SLES 10 SP1 so far with about 6TB Raid system without problems.I have upgraded the OS to CentOS 5.3 i386 and I have noticed the kernel can not recognize raid system larger than 2TB.Is there any parameters that I have to set ? or the i386 distribution simply does not support larger raid, so I have to use x86_64 version, instead?

The default kernel on my system is 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386.If I change grub to load 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5.i386, VMWare will work but OpenVZ will not. I've setup vsftpd correctly and it's running fine with local users (in the same LAN). However, when remote users wanna login to the server, it takes more than 1 minute to get in. Users do can login from remote. It just took too long. (It prompted for the username and password very fast.) Since the server is behind a router, I did configure the port forwarding for TCP 20-21. The centos version is 5.3. The vsftpd is v2.0.5.
