Since updating to C5.7 (64bit) when I go to burn an ISO it is not recognizing the blank disk and I have to use the force option(k3b). In 5.6 it worked fine. This is the same box of disks(and everything else) I was using before the update. The disks seem to burn fine (verify ok). It is just a PITA to have to hit the force button every time.

Previously I have Centos 5.3 installed. Eventually I upgraded the systems to Centos 5.4 Now is it possible to generate an ISO and burn into a DVD to make a new copy of Centos 5.4 installation disk? This is far better than downloading.

I burn CD fine Eject disc Drive is not accessible for reading or writing CD's until I reboot the computer Right click on the drive to mount volume and get "Unable to mount volume, no media in drive"
After reboot all is fine. I have tried multiple burners, same issue. USB burners can be unplugged, replugged in and used without a reboot.
Drive is a ASUS DRW 1612DL IDE
Happens in both Brasero and K3B

I can't burn a data disk through Ubuntu.I tried using the built-in disk creator, It had some kind of error saying the disk cannot be mounted.So I used Brasero instead and I got essentially the same error. When I tried to open both CD's the files appeared to be present but were all corrupt.Braso works fine for burning music CD's but I can't get it to work for data.here is the error log from Brasero:

I have a Samsung N135 notebook which boots well from USB. When I travel, I am afraid to damage the disk due to shocks. When I boot from USB and dismounts the build-in disk are the heads parked away from the platters? Is the disk not spinning at all? Is there a command to force power off of the disk!

The burnt disk shows separate files rather than a single iso. I've tried them on 3 different computers with the first boot device set to CD and they all boot normally into Grub (except the netbook which only has XP).

In general CentOS search automatically after startup for available software updates.Then after some (~20-30) minutes an icon appears in the toolbar which the user can click and install the updates.How can I manually speed up/trigger IMMEDIATELY the search for updates (without waiting for the built-in search)?

View 3 Replies View RelatedJust finished downloading the CentOS5.5 x86_64 DVD images (2 ISO's), and realize that I have almost run out of DVD-R's. First ISO is a perfect fit for the 4.7GB DVD, the second only is ~400MB. Wondering if there may be any issue if I burn the second one to a CD (which I have plenty). I guess it should be okay, but wanted to double-check.

As bugs happen in software development, I sometimes want to downgrade to the previous release, so force the installation of a specific version of the package.I tried the allow-downgrade plugin, but so far no luck. Neither yum update nor yum install seem to work with allow-downgrade. (It does not seem to do anything?). Does anyone have a working example for yum --allow-downgrade?

I have CeontOS machines connected to LCD via KVM which causes failure to properly detect screen resolution and I'm stuck with 800x600 until I reset X server with the LCD connected directly to the PC. How can I enforce higher screen resolutions?
EDIT: I followed the advise and left only one resolution in my xorg.conf but it didn't help.

Debian and debian based distros issue has a issue that has come to make it self aware to me when I was trying to burn a video on my hard drive with braseo and it won't let me burn more than 4.4 gigs to a dvd with 4.7 gigs of free space even a file that is over the 4.4 gig limit by a megabyte with windows i didn't have this problem. One more thing I have 16 gig flash drive and on debian and debian based distros i can only use 13.1 gigs of it but on fedora I can use all 16 gigs.

I have it set up to force user/group and force directory create mode 770 and force file mode of 770. This set up works perfectly well for normal connections to the server; no matter who connects, all files and directories are owned by the specified users/group and create modes I specify. The problem is when I try to rsync some files to the same shares. When I do this, rsync ignores the directory/file forced create mode. It will honor the user/group, however. As an example, if I create a directory on one machine connected to the samba share, I get the following:

The default install was selected, and I think that it checks for sufficient available disk space before installing. Still, it ran for quite a while before announcing that it was out of disk space.The Installation Guide is not very helpful, since there is a blank page where the disk space requirement is supposed to be. I just picked the default installation. A search of the forums on "not enough disk space" did not return much.

CentOS 5.3 installation is working fine with drive disk image at USB and CentOS 5.3 at DVD. Our application uses CentOS 5.3 and we build a custom kick-start ISO for installations. Using that ISO client is going to install on all hardware boxes.
Note while installing :
a) No network connection is avalible.
b) No USB isavalible.
c) No floppy is avalible.
d) Only single CD-ROM is avalible.
So, is it possible to build single custom kick-start CentOS 5.3 ISO which contains dirve disk image and entire installation will be done using that image. If so please let me know the steps to build it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have seen that is possible to boot from a USB stick and use a USB memory as hard drive.I have a server enable to hold 6 sata drives 3.5", But I want to use the 6 drives and make a Raid-5 setup for backups 5 -1 spare. /boot cannot be on a raid-5 level 0 or 1. But I want to have redundancy for my OS, them I can install Centos on a Raid-1 using 2 disk, which let me only 4 for the raid 5. I will run a backup I want to have a lot of space.

Not sure whether to go for 64 bit version of Centos 5 and run some of the Apps as 32 bit and a few as 64. The h/w is a Dell poweredge R710 with dual 2.26 GHz quad core Xeon procs, 5.86 GT/s 24GB ram memory speed 1067 MHz. Raid with perc 6/i.
I burned the Centos 5 iso onto cd-rw but my lap top and the new dell won't boot from it. I viewed the readme file which seems to suggest burning "boot.iso" on its own but that doesn't work either. A boot menu on the Dell has an option to "Deploy" an O/S. Do I need that or can't I simply boot from cd-rw? I used Nero to burn the cds. I asked Nero if any special box needs to be ticked to write a bootable image and they said no.
I have two servers to upgrade to 5.4 from 5.3. I have the DVD of 5.4 for both of them. Is there a way I can tell yum to use my DVD instead of the network to do the upgrade?
