Is it possible to install further software if your development machine has no internet connection? I have been searching for a solution and found that I can do
yum localinstall <cdrom path to package>
but it does not seem to work. Is this no longer possible?
I am trying to install CentOS-DS on version 5.4 x86_64. I cannot get to the Extras repo due to lack of wired Internet access. I have wireless (except to server) and I have big UFD drives.

I have a 2 Gb USB stick, i am trying to update my centos machine and also update php and mysql with the testing repo packages. Is there any way to setup the Centos Directory Server without an internet connection?? i tried using the command: yum install centos-ds
but this just tries to connect to the internet to to download the packages. Is there a site where i can find the package so that i can copy it to my server and install it or is there some other way to do this?
I installed CentOS. NetworkManager successfully installed and launched. I can ping any IP from terminal but I can't open any site in browser except 127.0.0.1 I can't open IP of the modem 192.168.1.1 in browser also.

The installer can't see my raid controller (I assume) as I'm getting the following error:"Error opening /dev/mapper/isw_jbhgjgjj_Vol0: No such device or address"It just sees them as 4 individual drives: sda, sdb, sdc and sdd.Please note that I have set up the RAID 5 in the controller bios interface and the image name is Vol0, which it seems that it tries to load but for some particular reason it can't.I have also tried different bios settings and nothing worked.

I created RAID 5 array and is working fine (adaptec status says Optimal) but I can't install CentOS to that array (1.5TB size).
Whenever I try to install with: linux dd
I'm asked for a driver, which I have downloaded from Adaptec site and extracted contents to USB drive (in installation found as /sba1) which has now a lot of IMG and some ISO files on it.
I try to load (I simplified names) RHEL5.img, CENTOS.img... with x64 names (one exact name: aacraid driverdisk-CentOS-x86_64.img) and I always get the error message: "No devices of the appropriate type were found on this driver disk"
This is going on for a week now and I can't find the right driver or something I'm doing wrong to get install done.

I want to install CentOS from netinstall CD, but it doesn't work for wireless connection, because it just looks up for eth0 connection. Well, I connected server to wired USB connection and it's named eth1. I want to use netinstall CD but using eth1 connection. Is there any way for doing it?

CentOS 5.3 installation is working fine with drive disk image at USB and CentOS 5.3 at DVD. Our application uses CentOS 5.3 and we build a custom kick-start ISO for installations. Using that ISO client is going to install on all hardware boxes.
Note while installing :
a) No network connection is avalible.
b) No USB isavalible.
c) No floppy is avalible.
d) Only single CD-ROM is avalible.
So, is it possible to build single custom kick-start CentOS 5.3 ISO which contains dirve disk image and entire installation will be done using that image. If so please let me know the steps to build it.

I have an MSI K9A2 Platinum mobo, which has a 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet Realtek 8111B built-in, a D-Link DIR-655 Router and a DSL modem. Compared to Windows Visya and other Linux distros ( Fedora 11, Suse 11.1, Mandriva 2009.1 ) access to the internet is much slower. It seems there is a noticeable delay when running CentOS 5.3. before internet access kicks in each time I am surfing the web or updating my system.
Is there any way I can speed things up, or determine why CentOS 5.3 seems much slower ?

If I reboot my machine I lose internet. This makes no sense to me.
I ifconfig eth0 down then ifconfig eth0 up and still no internet
Weird thing
I check ifconfig and my bcast ID is 192.168.2.255 when it is supposed to be 192.168.45.255
(When the internet is working if I check ifconfig the bcast ID is 192.168.2.255)
IF I change my bcast my internet stops working
If I reboot my machine my internet stops working
I checked /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and I see that in my snapshot (where the internet is actually working) the bcast is at 192.168.2.255
Without rebooting if I edit that script and I put it to .45.255 my internet stops working
If I reboot my machine at any time my internet stops working
I have also just realized that I cannot ping my gateway..
I've been trying to install the Fuppes media server onto CentOS and have had a few difficulties. I had to do a build from the source (svn build 578), then configure, make and make install. So far so good.Once I try to run fuppes, I get the error:[ERROR] Failed to bind socket to : 8.15.7.107:0.The documentation I've searched so far suggests that there is a config file that needs to be set with the appropriate ip address, but the file doesn't exist as the program hasn't started up yet!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install CentOS 5.5 on an old Pentium 4 desktop PC I have, which is not being used for much other than being a MTA, and I want to migrate this functionality onto the CentOS platform for stability (Windows is a perpetual nightmare. I partitioned a spare 20GB to experiment with, and I want to install CentOS into here to play around with first so I can move my files around between Windows and CentOS, until I'm happy all of the stuff is gone, then I can scrub the Windows partition and claim the space for CentOS.
So, I've downloaded and burned the DVD and tried to install. I start the install with no args from the main install menu, and the process goes through some probing and then comes up with the "Welcome to CentOS" menu. I go through this, and then it tries to start X Server. It fails, and falls back to text mode. I get the "Welcome to CentOS" screen again, and then proceed through it. I set my keyboard layout to UK, then this message comes up at the bottom of the screen:
"_X11TransSocketINETConnect() can't get address for localhost:6001: Temporary failure in name resolution"
then on the next line: "Cannot open display :1" If I force the install to text, by typing "linux text" at the first menu, I get about the same way through, but the install just hangs doing nothing, and no disc access to the install disc.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've noticed this happen with every CentOS installation I've done in the past and it's confusing me. On the software template screen select, I always select "Server" and leave the extras option unchecked, I also check "Customise now". The only things I choose are the editors (to get vi), Web server and server configuration tools (and this time also Java). I didn't select any GUI programs, yet it still installs things like X, GNOME components and also samba. Why does it do that? There no way they're needed for dependencies. Is there something I'm missing when selecting the software components? Why does it still install samba when I didn't select it from under "Servers" components? Or have I misunderstood what software selection does and it installs all those components regardless but doesn't automatically turn the services on?
View 5 Replies View RelatedToday I put in two brand new RAM sticks, same brand as the two I already have in there only difference is the new ones don't have the giant heatsinks that cover the stick. I have 4 slots for RAM, and I had 2 gigs in there, 1 gig in the first, and 1 in the 3rd. I put the two new ones in the empty slots. Everything worked fine, so it seemed. I was able to boot up, log into Ubuntu. It looked like everything worked, said I had internet access by the icon up on the top panel. The only thing that was curious was my weather app wasn't updating. So I went into a web browser, and the home page showed up fine. Which was the default, the ubuntu google search engine. I tried to go to another site though, and it kept looking for the site, for a while but never found it. I tried multiple sites, same thing. I tried to ping www.ubuntu.com, and www.yahoo.com and it just hung for a while, after a while it couldn't find it. I tried ifconfig eth0, and even just ifconfig. It showed that eth0 was connected, it had the ip address, the DNS address, the MAC, everythting. Only problem I could see was at the end it said something like Interupts: 18, I don't know if that's normal or not.
So I tried then to reset the router, no difference. I tried resetting the hub (at least I think it's a hub, could be a switch or something), which is connected to the router, and the hub connects to my computer. Now that, made it worse. Now the icon for my internet has disappeared, well it tried to reconnect but can't. ifconfig eth0 brings up no ip address anymore, no DNS, no nothing. I tried rebooting, didn't help.
So here I am, and I'm definatly in need of some help. I find it very hard to believe that adding new RAM would kill my ability to get online, that doesn't make any sense to me. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit, had 2 gigs in there, and now have 4. Edit: I tried rebooting once again, and this time when logging on Ubuntu it for some reason checked my filesystem for errors, found none as far as I can tell, then logged on. Once I logged in, it connected again to the internet, but it's doing the same thing it was before I restarted the hub. Says I'm connected, but can't visit any webpage, weather isn't updating, but homepage is showing up, etc.[URL].. Which is the same RAM I had in there, minus the one in there had a giant grey incasing/heatsink on them.
i am new one here and have a question.i dont have internet connection home and i want to install ubuntu. i find a dvd release here [URL].. and it suppose it has more things than the cd version.i think to it has because its a big iso file. so, if i install this one, am i going to be able to play dvds, to work with openofice, and other stufs, or do i need something else to? what about grafik card driver?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI live in northern Canada. I am not in a high speed internet zone but use an alternative method which I pay lots of money to get high speed. However I am restricted to 5 GB of traffic per month.
Now I have to computers running Ubuntu. So for example, if I want to install TuxPaint on my first PC then I would go to the software center and it would download then install the software for me. Now if I wanted to install the same program on my second computer it would download it again. The problem is that this would download twice as much from the internet. Is there any way that I can save internet bandwidth by using the download files from my first computer to install the program on my second computer? Similarly, can I only download updates once but install them on both computers?
I currently have Ubuntu 10.04, no installation CD, and no interwebs to connect my computer to.What I'm really looking for is some file (or set of files) to download that will allow me to compile C programs (after moving said files onto a USB and then move to and install on my compy at home).
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have purchased an archos 2.8 internet tablet. i have gone through the website and have read that the device is COMPLETeLY open, allowing for people to put android, or even ubuntu onto the device. but do ya think there is any website that google can find with people that have done this? no. the device comes preinstalled with android 2.2 froyo. i enjoy android. but on this little guy i need something a little bit lighter and less bugs. with only having access to a limited french "android market". i certainly got around that and have the full market available, but it was just too much hassle and the device thinks its a phone. what flavor of ubuntu would work will with this wifi touch screen device? heres a link to the device if your wondering what im talking about.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a dial-up connection through PeoplePC and I'm running FC11. In order to get my modem working, I'm told I need to install the wvdial package. To get wvdial, I need wvstreams. I downloaded the source for both on my Windows machine, and transferred the .gz files over to my FC partition.
When I try to ./configure wvstreams, I receive an error about not having a C compiler at $PATH. I'm pretty lost about what I need to do to correct this.
Basically I just want my dial-up to work with FC11

At this stage in another Linux distribution I am connected. In OpenSuse, when I start Firefox, it cannot connect. The problem is not in the browser, Software Management program also reports that connection is not available. ping 212.199.17.154 is successful. I tried to disable Firewall - doesn't help.
I am a new user to linux. I downloaded and installed ubuntu 9.10 on my old desktop to try it out because i have always liked the idea of linux but have never really found the time to use or learn to use it. having had an old dos computer i can vaguely remember the idea of using a command line to change directories etc. so i just decided to wipe out xp on the desktop and install ubuntu lol. Installation went smooth but then i ran into some problems.
Unfortunately i use iphone tethering for access to the internet but ubuntu will only recognize my iphone as a picture storage device. so i did some research and found that i had to download and install some packages to set up tethering on ubuntu. so on my laptop running vista i downloaded libusb-1.0.6, cmake-2.8.0, libiphone-0.9.5, usbmuxd-1.0.0, and some other packages such as ifuse and libgpod. they were all .tar.bz2 files or .tar.gz files. I put these on a jump drive and took the jumpdrive and put it into my desktop. what i was wondering is if there is a way to install these packages from a usb jumpdrive? or is there a simpler way that i may have overlooked to establish an internet connection.
