I am trying to install the intel compiler onto my 64 bit machine to compile fortran and I cannot get past this error.
When I run the install package it looks for the neccesary pre requisites tell me that I need
I was trying to follow this guide [url] and the only library that installed correctly was the last one, the 64 bit one.
When i type yum install (one of the above libraries) it comes back and says that it is already present which cannot be correct since the install program asks for them.

what my intension is i want to cross complile vlc source code into arm9 mini 2440 target board for that i am compiling vlc source code in intel desktop pc which has fedora 10 version. so that in order to compile vlc source code we need to install following codecs those are libmad 0.15.1b,libid3tag-0.15.1b,madplay-0.15.1b,i got these codecs from h[URL] .and vlc sorce code from [URL]. i have successfully compiled libmad 0.15.1b and libid3tag-0.15.1b . those two are compiled in the following way [color] ./cofigure --prefix=/home/narendra/lib/ make make install [/color]
i was trying to compile madplay-0.15.1b in the following way
Code:

I am running a server which is hosting a site where members can upload videoclips. I noticed that upon upload a thumbnail is not created for the videoclip. I found out that ffmpeg needed to be properly installed and in my case ffmpeg-php as the site runs on php. So far so good. I followed the instructions found somewhere to install ffmpeg-php but stall at the command: dot slash configure && make The error I get is:
checking for egrep... grep -E
checking for a sed that does not truncate output... slash slash bin slash sed
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
I presume it's because gcc is missing. how I can start tackling the problem and ultimately get gcc running so I can install the ffmpeg? I am really sorry I was hoping to elaborate a bit more but I get an error: You are only allowed to post URLs to other sites after you have made 15 posts or more. so I guess I need to wait and describe it differently.

So for those of you who has built GCC from source would know that you can't install GCC without an existing GCC. So my question is, what would happen if all computers in the world suddenly just died, and all you had was the computer in front of you, and a copy of GCC 4.5. How would you install that?
I ask because I would like to install GCC 4.5 on my old powerbook G4 mac without installing a binary GCC provided by Tiger 10.4 disks. I would like to build GCC from source, without an existing GCC to complicate updating.

Today I put in two brand new RAM sticks, same brand as the two I already have in there only difference is the new ones don't have the giant heatsinks that cover the stick. I have 4 slots for RAM, and I had 2 gigs in there, 1 gig in the first, and 1 in the 3rd. I put the two new ones in the empty slots. Everything worked fine, so it seemed. I was able to boot up, log into Ubuntu. It looked like everything worked, said I had internet access by the icon up on the top panel. The only thing that was curious was my weather app wasn't updating. So I went into a web browser, and the home page showed up fine. Which was the default, the ubuntu google search engine. I tried to go to another site though, and it kept looking for the site, for a while but never found it. I tried multiple sites, same thing. I tried to ping www.ubuntu.com, and www.yahoo.com and it just hung for a while, after a while it couldn't find it. I tried ifconfig eth0, and even just ifconfig. It showed that eth0 was connected, it had the ip address, the DNS address, the MAC, everythting. Only problem I could see was at the end it said something like Interupts: 18, I don't know if that's normal or not.
So I tried then to reset the router, no difference. I tried resetting the hub (at least I think it's a hub, could be a switch or something), which is connected to the router, and the hub connects to my computer. Now that, made it worse. Now the icon for my internet has disappeared, well it tried to reconnect but can't. ifconfig eth0 brings up no ip address anymore, no DNS, no nothing. I tried rebooting, didn't help.
So here I am, and I'm definatly in need of some help. I find it very hard to believe that adding new RAM would kill my ability to get online, that doesn't make any sense to me. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit, had 2 gigs in there, and now have 4. Edit: I tried rebooting once again, and this time when logging on Ubuntu it for some reason checked my filesystem for errors, found none as far as I can tell, then logged on. Once I logged in, it connected again to the internet, but it's doing the same thing it was before I restarted the hub. Says I'm connected, but can't visit any webpage, weather isn't updating, but homepage is showing up, etc.[URL].. Which is the same RAM I had in there, minus the one in there had a giant grey incasing/heatsink on them.

I live in northern Canada. I am not in a high speed internet zone but use an alternative method which I pay lots of money to get high speed. However I am restricted to 5 GB of traffic per month.
Now I have to computers running Ubuntu. So for example, if I want to install TuxPaint on my first PC then I would go to the software center and it would download then install the software for me. Now if I wanted to install the same program on my second computer it would download it again. The problem is that this would download twice as much from the internet. Is there any way that I can save internet bandwidth by using the download files from my first computer to install the program on my second computer? Similarly, can I only download updates once but install them on both computers?

i have purchased an archos 2.8 internet tablet. i have gone through the website and have read that the device is COMPLETeLY open, allowing for people to put android, or even ubuntu onto the device. but do ya think there is any website that google can find with people that have done this? no. the device comes preinstalled with android 2.2 froyo. i enjoy android. but on this little guy i need something a little bit lighter and less bugs. with only having access to a limited french "android market". i certainly got around that and have the full market available, but it was just too much hassle and the device thinks its a phone. what flavor of ubuntu would work will with this wifi touch screen device? heres a link to the device if your wondering what im talking about.

I am a new user to linux. I downloaded and installed ubuntu 9.10 on my old desktop to try it out because i have always liked the idea of linux but have never really found the time to use or learn to use it. having had an old dos computer i can vaguely remember the idea of using a command line to change directories etc. so i just decided to wipe out xp on the desktop and install ubuntu lol. Installation went smooth but then i ran into some problems.
Unfortunately i use iphone tethering for access to the internet but ubuntu will only recognize my iphone as a picture storage device. so i did some research and found that i had to download and install some packages to set up tethering on ubuntu. so on my laptop running vista i downloaded libusb-1.0.6, cmake-2.8.0, libiphone-0.9.5, usbmuxd-1.0.0, and some other packages such as ifuse and libgpod. they were all .tar.bz2 files or .tar.gz files. I put these on a jump drive and took the jumpdrive and put it into my desktop. what i was wondering is if there is a way to install these packages from a usb jumpdrive? or is there a simpler way that i may have overlooked to establish an internet connection.

I have a Dell Mini with Unbuntu Hardy 8.04 with a Broadcom STA wireless card BCM4312 802.11b/g. In April the Network Manager stopped working. After trying various fixes, based on advice and instructions posted for others who had the same issue, today I decided to completely uninstall the Network Manager and install wicd- which seems like a working alternative. I uninstalled the Network Manager and used the installation instructions for wicd (URL...). While connected to the internet with a wired connection, in my Synaptic Package Manager I entered the new address deb URL... hardy extras. Then I opened a terminal and entered. It looks like an argument is needed, but I have no idea how to add that to the command. I've found the key file (I think) here URL...but I don't know what to do next.

Trying to install 10.10 from USB onto my Dell Inspiron mini 10. I am able to boot into the USB, but I cannot connect to the internet - wireslessly or otherwise. When I plug the internet cable directly into the computer that does not work. I had to fidget with some drives to get the Network Manager to work, which it finally did, but it won't connect either - just keeps asking for the password.

Recently I've been having problems with the internet whilst using Ubuntu 10.10 (Dual booting with Windows Vista Home Premium x32). The problem is I simply can't use my internet (can't connect and the option doesn't show up). At first it said (using wireless internet by the way), firmware missing. After playing around for a bit, I managed to get a option to install my internet card driver (Broadcom).
As I try to install it says this:
Code:
SystemError: Failed to lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock This is really frustrating me as I need the internet on it.

I was having a hard time configuring ubuntu server with command line so this is the steps I did to install the GUI;
Code:
then
Code:
then
Code:
The GUI started up fine and I logged in as root, then I tried Update Manager and received this error message:
Requires installation of untrusted packages
I tried this in terminal window
Code:
and got
W: Failed to fetch [url]........(-5 - No address associated with hostname
So I did System Testing and got the result that my network was fine but my internet failed!
I could do command line update no problem before installing GUI. I can see it on the network on another computer though.
Trying to setup without the GUI is starting to look easier than with.

I just recently Ubuntu 9.10 and have never used Linux at all before. I was wondering, all the links and tips and everything tell me to use Ubuntu Software Center. I haven't had a chance to actually go to the Software Center yet but does it require an internet connection to install software or can I download the tar.gz / tar.bz2 files from sources such as Softpedia.com and still install them using Software Center without a Internet Connection?

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto an older laptop for my boss. However, after installation I lost all internet capabilities... both through wireless and ethernet connections. There is zero indication that Ubuntu is picking up any wireless connections at all and when I plugged into an ethernet connection Ubuntu acts as if it is trying to connect, however unsuccessfully. I have eliminated the internet connection as my problem because I was able to connect with my laptop running 9.10 with no problem. I have searched and searched everywhere for fixes to this problem however 99% of them need an internet connection to install the required firmware and drivers... is there any OFFLINE solution out there? The computer is a Compaq Presario 2200 with a Boradcom Corp BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller

I don't yet have an internet connection on my machine so I am using cyber cafes to do my research and whatnot. However, most of the stuff I read concerning updates and installations rely heavily on the machine using an internet connection to automatically install various packages.I don't mind reading up myself on this kind of thing but I think I need a pointer in the right direction as "ubuntu package install without apt/get" doesn't bring up much on a google search (the only entry on the first page is a post on this forum back from 2005 about kernal compiling!).
As an example, the file I would like to install is "aircrack-ng-1.0.tar.gz", which I've already downloaded and saved to my machine's desktop. I'm not really asking how to install aircrack, per se, but just any kind of package without relying on an internet connection (i.e. download the program/package to a flash disk and then on to my machine).

how to install firmware-b43-installer without internet connectivity. I downloaded firmware-b43-installer from another computer with internet. Then I found out from the error messages I also needed b43-fwcutter. So I also downloaded then installed b43-fwcutter. b43-fwcutter installed with no problems. Then I tried to install firmware-b43-installer again with no luck. I saw in the error messages it said something about broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2. I have no idea how to install a tar.bz2 file.
Here is where I downloaded the files I needed.
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...10.5-4_all.deb
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...013-2_i386.deb
http://mirror2.openwrt.org/sources/b...0.10.5.tar.bz2
I have all the files now so what do I need to do to install firmware-b43-installer?
