I have installed CentOS 5.5 on a computational cluster and want to limit the disk space used per user to 10GB. I do not know what is the relation between blocks and the the volume i want (10GB). What is the values I should used in the file opend by "edquota username" command? What is the usage of inode? there are soft and hard items in columns 3 ,4 and 6,7. Which of them should be configured? here is the example by CentOS documents. I only changed the file system which is in my case /dev/sdb0 (this is mounted as /home in my system. What changes I should do to this example to limit the user to 10GB disk scape?
Disk quotas for user testuser (uid 501):
Filesystem blocks soft hard inodes soft hard
/dev/sdb0 440436 0 0 37418 0 0
How can i create quota for specified user : mr.X for any specified partition. I have 10 partition, and give mr. X access for only 2 partition and give him different quotas: says 800MB on sda13 and 3GB on sda14.
is it possible to limit the size of a specific folder independent of user or group? I want to restrict /var/log to a total size of 1GB. I don't think that the common approach to create a 1GB partition is the right way since it is possible that I want increase or decrease the limit in the near future.
I know if I run repquota -a I can see the quotas set for all users. How do I modify the quota for a specific user?So say the output for john is:User used soft hard grace used soft hard grace----------------------------------------------------------------------john.someth -- 122844 51200 51200 4995 0 0How do I make his block limits 0 so they are unlimited?
Im trying to limit the diskspace users on the system may consume, and i found quotas (im a total linux noob). But when i try to set it, no matter what i set it to the maximus is 2 GB. Now... i need quite a lot more than that. One user should be able to use 1900 GB and the other 600 GB. How can i fix this? Im using ubuntu server 10.04.
There isn't any separate file system for /home and we have only one (/) root file system for everything else on the system. Is there any way that we can still implement quotas for users through their home directories was mounted on (/) root file system. Do we need to have a separate file system (/home) compulsory for implementing disk quotas?
I would like to move a user's home directory to a different disk. Is there a "clean" way to do this? Specifically, is it safe to just copy all the .* files to the new destination and then change the home in the user config? Or are there maybe environment entries with absolute paths which will cause problems with this strategy?
I've a java program which needs to be executed regardless of whether a user is logged in or not. Currently I've a shell script which executes the java program. I login to the server and run this shell script when the server is rebooted. I would like to start this script automatically preferably as a service so that I can stop and restart this service whenever I update the java program.
I am working on the beginning of implementing a two-node cluster with shared storage (GFS) and IP address. Both machines are virtual on VMware ESX 3.5, that should not make a difference, but that is the background.current status is that I have a single node cluster built with only the IP address configured within the cluster. The issue that I am having is that I have configured a service to contain only the IP address resource, however, when I go into cluster management that "service" does not register. As such, I cannot bring it online, ping it, etc. below is my cluster.conf configuration:
any one are implementing Transparent Cache in bridge mode. after googling i found article but its not working for me. any one have done this before ? [URL]
First I Installed redhat by making partitions on 250 GB...first few days everything was fine but later when i started pc it says this error.. i googled it and that might be bad sector prob...i guess thats why i installed REDHAT on 80GB which is in good state but in this harddisk again i encountered same problem when i boot it , it says above error and hangs..But if i try to boot it from CD then everything works fine.might be the problem please help me...
There is a disk 500 gb, it is broken on /boot and on /root and on /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Whether prompt it is possible to redistribute a disk without loss of data namely it is necessary to make/boot and two equivalent on disk volume.
I wanted to know if it's posible to import filesystem quotas. And if so, how can I do it? I recently migrated a server, and presently the users don't have any quota limitations.
Am attempting to setup an NFS partition for use by a number of users. I would with to use quotas to ensure equitable use of the HDDs resources. However, I keep getting the following error:
I windows xp. I install vmware on it and install centos 5. Now how to use internet in centos 5 using user name and password. Our internet provider give us user name and password.
I am trying to install CentOS 5.2, and the installation ran out of disk space after running for about 2 hours.I checked the FAQ, and it said 1.2 GB. The disk is 3 GB. The default install was selected, and I think that it checks for sufficient available disk space before installing. Still, it ran for quite a while before announcing that it was out of disk space. The Installation Guide is not very helpful, since there is a blank page where the disk space requirement is supposed to be. I just picked the default installation. A search of the forums on "not enough disk space" did not return much.
I am having new hardware and IDE driver for that hardware as drive disk image (it8213_centos53.img). CentOS 5.3 installation is working fine with drive disk image at USB and CentOS 5.3 at DVD. Our application uses CentOS 5.3 and we build a custom kick-start ISO for installations. Using that ISO client is going to install on all hardware boxes.
Note while installing : a) No network connection is avalible. b) No USB isavalible. c) No floppy is avalible. d) Only single CD-ROM is avalible.
So, is it possible to build single custom kick-start CentOS 5.3 ISO which contains dirve disk image and entire installation will be done using that image. If so please let me know the steps to build it.
I'm looking for a simple solution to backup my CentOS Server (5.x) on a daily base to a mounted disk. I found the glastree tool but I have no clue if it will work on CentOS.All recommendations, tipps, hints and maybe scripts are welcome. Unfortunatelly I'm an Linux newbie and starting with Linux CentOS a couple of weeks ago
I need to read information from SUN hard disks which are about a decade old. My CentOS 5.6 mount command comes from util-linux 2.13-pre7."mount -t ufs -o ufstype=sun /dev/sdb2 /New" reports "mount: unknown filesystem type 'ufs'", though its man page describes such settings. How could I read an external UltraSCSI hard disk (yes: high pitch noise and only 9 GB capacity) on a current CentOS? Is that possible at all?
i am trying to implement DSR algo by tcl in ns2.but the problem i am facing is that i cannot make out how to circulate the ROUTE-REQUEST & ROUTE-REPLY packet in the established network.
I have been giving the task of shell scripting in C++ for implementation of Secure command in my shell. The Secure command will prompt for the filename and the password (like *****) and can only be displayed when ls -secure and password is provided. For example
I am truly sorry if this has already been answered, but I don't think the question was asked in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY, maybe?
I installed Slackware 13.37 on my Dell desktop pc (I don't think that the model information is relevant in this case...), and I was able to insert CD's and DVD's which would then be mounted AUTOMATICALLY so that I could then browse the contents etc. I can STILL do this, whether or not I am logged-in as "root" or as a "normal" user...
Now here is my problem : I JUST installed Slackware 13.37 on my Toshiba notebook (a Satellite 210, in this case) TODAY. Now, I can insert the same CD's / DVD's into the drive and have them automount as the "root" user, but when I log in as a simple user, I get errors telling me that they can NOT BE MOUNTED! The messages on quite long and complex, but I can paste an copy into a secondary post if that will help. For my part, what the error message says is a lot of gibberish!
I have examined the user information on both my desktop AND laptop computers to see if there were any major differences, and there are NONE EXCEPT FOR ONE : My "user" account on my desktop is user # 1000, while on my notebook it is 100. The DEFAULT offered in both cases was 1000 when I created the accounts, but I did not see why the next user in the list should be over 999 higher than the last one listed, so on the notebook I did not accept the default offered, and instead choose to use # 100. Was that wrong? Why does Slackware start the first created user at such a large user number?
I did NOT do anything to allow the automount of optical disks as a user on my desktop pc (at least, not to my knowledge...) that I have not done on the notebook!
I have seen that is possible to boot from a USB stick and use a USB memory as hard drive.I have a server enable to hold 6 sata drives 3.5", But I want to use the 6 drives and make a Raid-5 setup for backups 5 -1 spare. /boot cannot be on a raid-5 level 0 or 1. But I want to have redundancy for my OS, them I can install Centos on a Raid-1 using 2 disk, which let me only 4 for the raid 5. I will run a backup I want to have a lot of space.
Using 4 disk for raid-5 2 TB I will have 6TB no spare, no spare is not a good option at least I will prefer 1 spare.Well, I was thinking, the server MoBo have USB support, if I open the box I can see the small entrances, If Centos let me installed on a USB memory drive, can I trust a USB memory stick?t night with bacula.
I am looking to create a user to be able to do WinSCP or SSH into the system and only be able to see /var/www/html/joomla/ and that is it. I don't want them to be able to start or stop service but be able to upload and download files to the specific directory or change privileges of the mentioned directory. Is that possible? what commands should I run.
whether Fedora / Gnome are planning on implementing a 2D version of Gnome 3? (i.e same GUI but without the bling). Like what Ubuntu did with Unity 2D. Unfortunately, my old laptop cannot run Gnome 3 due to the graphics specs and fallback mode doesn't work so I'm stuck with KDE.
there have been many posts about trying to use FF4 with graphic acceleration and i ran into an article that discusses some of the ramifications in doing so: Context and from the information presented, it appears that mozilla's approach is to blacklist graphic drivers that are not sufficiently "malware-proof" since code from the webpage is presented directly to the graphics driver.
i was not aware of this side issue and figured many others were also uninformed, but my thoughts are that some careful consideration should be done before implementing this new functionality. Perhaps someone more knowledgable could chime in with more concise information.
