This just started happening when I go to use my scanner with xsane:
Failed to open device "epkowa:interpreter:001:003":
Access to resource has been denied
The work around is
# chmod 2777 /dev/bus/usb/001/003
How do I tell CentOS I want my users to automatically be able to read my scanner when I boot up or when I insert the scanners USB cord after boot up?

- Printer successfully configured using CUPS
- Scanner only works when I am Root.
- When trying to access scanner as user it says there is no scanner attached.
What should be the groups for this user in order to access the scanner? Actually, they are: haldaemon, disk, audio, video, cdrom, plugdev, power, scanner, lp. Below are the outputs for sane-find-scanner (as both root and user), although, since the scanner works well under root, I am almost sure it is a problem with setting permissions and groups.

I just received a Canon Pixma MX320 as a gift.
I am currently running the Ubuntu 10.04 OS
I was able to get the printer up and running by downloading the printer driver for debian linux (3.1) from the Canon site without any problems.
Unfortunately I am not having the same luck with the scanner.
I tried downloading ScanGear MP for Linux (deb) (1.3) from the same Canon site but have not yet been able to get the XSane Image Scanner to recognize this scanner driver for my Canon.
When I mount an external usb drive on linux (CentOs4), the permissions are by default set to read-only. Since there are multiple users on the computer who need to use the external drive, I want everybody to have rw permission for the entire drive. I also want them to be able to mount the drive if the computer has accidentially been shut down. They can use sudo mount to mount the drive, but this will only give them read permission, and I obviously don't want to allow sudo chmod.
Is there a default setting that I can change so that every new external usb disk automatically gets rw permissions?
Is there a way to have a directory automatically change the permissions of a file that is written to it? I have a program which saves files to a directory, and gives those files read-only permissions to members in the group. This is a problem, because other users of my computer need to be able to edit these files. The directory itself has rw permissions for group members.
I guess what I am looking for is a way for the directory permissions to "override" the permissions the program is trying to save the files as. For example, if the directory has "rw" permissions for the group, then any file saved to it will automatically get the same permissions, regardless of what the program writing the file is trying to do.
I have a samba shared folder in my flash disk. Yesterday I installed ubuntu 11.04 and now sharing is not working any more. I do the usual procedure (that worked so far), I right click my folder > sharing options and tick "share this folder" as well as "Allow others to create and delete files in this folder" but I dont get the usual messages asking to add permissions automatically.When I try to mount my folder in another pc with linux, I get permission denied and that the folder is only readable and in another, windows cannot find the network path to my folder.My folder has about 10.000 files. asking to add permissions automaticallyI created another folder on the same flash and when I create share I get the message asking to add permissions automatically but it is not visible either. I even cant see my folder in "my places" > network, so it is not a matter of the mounting command

My problem is the following: When someone create a folder, the folder permissions are automatically set with:
(let's take my username: Yann)
Owner: Yann
Group: Yann
Clearly that's wrong.. I want the Group to be auto set has "users" so everyone can access the folders on that share. Anyone know how to change this ? chmod and chown is getting a bit boring

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and I would like a USB flash drive to be automatically mounted whenever I plug it in. The drive is FAT formatted. It mounts when I plug it in but all files are only writable by my user, other users only have read access. I understand that I need to add a corresponding entry to the /etc/fstab file. I've added the following so far:/dev/sdb1 /mnt/USB_DRIVE vfat
Firstly, is that appropriate so far? I've created /mnt/USB_DRIVE as root. Next, I'm not sure what options I should be finishing the line with, especially to get all users to be able to write to the drive.
I was able to get my Epson Stylus NX510 printer up and running (after much issue), but I can't get the scanner working. I'm on a laptop, and the printer/scanner is wifi enabled and broadcasts with its own IP address. I can print with no problem, but xsane and simple scan don't recognize the scanner. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

I have downloaded the pixma drivers and have compiled the command line program, but it can't find the scanner.
lsusb returns a Canon scanner Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04a9:1901 Canon, Inc.
and sane-find-scanner returns:found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1901 [CanoScan]) at libusb:001:005
but scanimage -L (under my user login or sudo) returns only the webcam. No other scanner found.
My system is running Linux Mint 7, ia64 kernel 2.6.28-11-generic

I've installed XSane Image Scanner. When I first opened it, it searched for my scanner and didn't give any error messages, and it had my scanner model in the heading of the scan window. But when I hit the scan button, it gave me saying, "Failed to start scanner: error during device I/O.I closed everything, and opened XSane again. This time it said there was no scanner available. The scanner is plugged into the USB port and uses that for both power and data. It's a Canoscan Model N650U.

I would like to sync the web folders using rsync. However, when I sync the files from the Cpanel host the permissions look as follows:

But that doesn't work on the Webmin server which needs the following:

It seems the Cpanel install has the group as 'nobody' whilst webmin has it the same as the file owner. I can fix this by running:

But as the file transfers will be frequent, I don't want the files to be inaccessible until chown is run.
So, what I really want to know is - how can I change things on the 'webmin' server so that files with ownership owner:nobody will run?
my scanner used to work in lenny, now im using squeeze fresh install.
i intall hplip with synaptic in order to setup my scanner, printer is working, i dont need the fax, but the scanner is not working with xsane.
normal user and sudo see the scanner with

i know my user is in group lp and scanner root cant use the scannner either.
I am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?
this is probably something trivial but how can I auto start gdm on CentOS 5.4??I had to perform a text install due to Anaconda having some issues as I'm running Cent on Sun's VirtualBox.I have tried to add chkconfig --add gdm which didn't work, also there is no init.d script either for gdm so not sure if it's in a directory somewhere or if I have to create it manually??IF I run simply gdm from teh cli then everything is ok and starts fine....

When I click on the device menu & usb, the devices I have plugged in show up, but are greyed out. I had this problem on Mandriva when I first started using VirtualBox & had to put my user account in the USB group. My account is in the vboxusers group but there is no USB group on CentOS & I can't figure out how to give myself permission to the USB ports.

View 13 Replies View RelatedSince I installed Centos in Text mode it automatically boots into terminal instead of X. I merely have to type "startx' and the gui loads without a problem. Is there a simple way to automate this so that I boot directly into the gui?
(BTW, I checked many of the posts about the GUI but most dealt with startx not working or with modifying VNC Server - that wiki seems like overkill in my case.)

I have changed them so that they read
crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 64 Nov 4 13:56 ttyS0
But every time I initialize the dev board the permissions switch back to the original state. I have found lots about preventing the permissions switching back upon reboot but that doesn't appear to be the problem.
