CentOS 5 :: Formatting USB HD - Neither Can Change Permissions
Mar 28, 2010
I make a new msdos partition (msdos) with Parted for data exchange with Windows. owner group is root (Parted requires root to work), but owner user is my current user. so neither can change permissions. I can't change partition label, too.

Tired of fat32 fragility, I reformatted a 4GB pen-drive as ext4 using Yast's partitioner. I chose format as ext4 and checked fstab options "can be mounted by user", "no access time" and "ordered journaling". I thought that these fstab options would be ineffective since a removable device won't be added to fstab. when I insert the pen-drive it auto-mounts and the folder /media/EMTEC is created (EMTEC is the volume name). The relevant mount entries are:
Code:
:~> cat /etc/fstab | grep sde
:~> cat /etc/mtab | grep sde
/dev/sde1 /media/EMTEC ext4 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0
:~>
There's no fstab entry, as it should be, and there is a mtab entry corresponding to the pen-drive, /sde1. However the /media/EMTEC as created (by udev, I suppose) is owned by root, I can't write to it. But if I change (as root) the /etc/EMTEC folder permissions so it belongs to the regular user, i can (obviously) write to it *and* it stays so *between* remounts. Haven't tried a reboot yet. What I'm not sure is if ordered journaling is OK for a pen-drive - or any kind of journaling, for that matter. Or will this significantly decrease flash memory life? Also, the fstab options set in Yast appear to be remembered by whatever creates mtab, as well as /media/EMTEC permissions. Is that so? Where are these settings kept? How does this work?

How can I format a USB hard drive to ext3/ext4 or whatever file format and have full permission to read, write and execute all files afterwards? When using the command line (as ROOT of course) mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb? Restricts the rights to ROOT as does the procedure gParted. The man mkfs did not help much. Configuring the fstab- file is a bit of a hassle, so it would be nice, if there was an option to set the permissions "correctly" right from the beginning. Setting Ubuntu (I'm using Ubuntu 9.10) up, so that it mounts USB devices not as ROOT as default but giving all users all permissions seems to be really complicated, as a guy from my local LUG told me.

I'm new to Ubuntu Linux but have many years on windows platform. Please can someone help me with how to change the following items.
No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. So how can I change this for a color I do like.
No.2 I would also like to change the login dialogue screen style. I know this is possible but again I'm fumbling to see how I can do this. I have tried with the start up manager but every attempt fails, the settings don't take. Once again I suspect permissions are at the bottom of the problem?
No.3 Would like to have a colorful splash screen image on boot up, I've managed to remove the old one (small white 3 ring ubuntu logo on black background) but havent been able to install or replace with a new one. Its been incredibly frustrating, I'm feel sure I'm missing something simple here. Wondering if its permissions yet again?
Anyone who can offer help on any of the above, guidance or advise me would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm still very much feeling my way with Linux so keep it simple.

I am using CentOS 5.4 dvd to install. What I need is to be able to create a partition with GUI (it's druid, maybe) without formatting it. I remeber once there was a check into creating new partition form, but maybe i am confusing with fedora or other distros. Is there a way to complete job using GUI or should i create partitions: / /boot and swap with GUI and the others with fdsik?

As I recent convert from Ubuntu to Centos, I have a lot to learn. In Ubuntu, I can plug in a memory stick, run the menu option: System/Adminstration/Partition Manager, highlight the memory stick and choose "Format: Encrypt"
In Centos, my memory stick is /dev/sdc1, how do I, using command line: format it as /ext3, encrypt it using cryptsetup, and set a password?

I'm having an issue with formatting the HDDs during the CentOS 5.5 installation.I've set up a hardware RAID1 with 2TB HDDs using FastTrack TX4650 (http:url... as a RAID controller. Then I tried to install CentOS 5.5 32-bit version using this configuration. I preloaded the required RAID drivers for the CentOS and started the installation. Everything went fine until the part where the CentOS formats the HDD - it took 12 hours and the process still goes on. I cannot determine whether the install process is stuck or the HDD is still being formatted.how long the formatting should take considering the above mentioned configuration?

Anyone gotten CentOS 5 to install on this hardware? The installer boots and partitions the drive, but either crashes during formatting of the partitions or during package installation with a kernel panic.

I have two servers, both running CentOS, but one running Cpanel as the control panel and the other running Webmin.
I would like to sync the web folders using rsync. However, when I sync the files from the Cpanel host the permissions look as follows:
Code:
But that doesn't work on the Webmin server which needs the following:
Code:
It seems the Cpanel install has the group as 'nobody' whilst webmin has it the same as the file owner. I can fix this by running:
Code:
But as the file transfers will be frequent, I don't want the files to be inaccessible until chown is run.
So, what I really want to know is - how can I change things on the 'webmin' server so that files with ownership owner:nobody will run?

I'm trying to change the permission of /media/external which is my external HDD that I want to share with read/write rights over LAN. Tried both Nautilus and chmod as simple user and as root to no avail. Permissions keep reverting back to default.
I have a feeling that Linux for security reasons does not allow me to share the top directory of a device... As any way to work around this?

I have a Debian Wheezy 7 installation. When I turn it on it boots to the log in screen normally. However when I type in my username/password and try to login the screen briefly turns off for about one second and returns to the log in screen. I cannot log in.
This started happening immediately after I changed the owner and permissions for the "/tmp" folder and all of its contained files/directories. This is the only change I made to the system before the problem began. Immediately after I made the change, I rebooted the system and that's when the problem began.

after a fresh install of fedora 13 I was expecting a few niggles and here's one, I've googled and read man chmod and chown and there seems to be plenty of conflicting advice, oh yeah the problem, I installed a package called get_iplayer (allows downloading of bbc iplayer content) via yum, only thing is I can only run it as root whereas in f12 I could as a normal user. It's probably the simplest command to change permissions, also I can't find any info on what the different numbers mean (775 777 etc)

how to use permissions. I ran into a weird problem in which I am unable to change permissions as root. I have a file I've been testing commands on, and somewhere along the line I think I gave it zero permissions. Now I'd like to restore some permissions, but can't. Here's what I'm looking at:
Code:
jeremy@jeremy-laptop:~/test$ ls -l
total 16
-rw-r--r-- 1 jeremy jeremy 235 2011-05-17 13:15 onelink
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jeremy jeremy 27 2011-08-02 18:05 threecopy
-rwxr-xr-x 1 jeremy jeremy 27 2011-05-09 17:10 three.txt

I am trying to figure out how to change the permissions on Wine, so that the only thing the users on this computer can do is access the programs on Wine that are already installed. Here's what I did already:
- Accessed Home Folder
- Accessed 'Hidden' folder called '.wine'
- Right Clicked on 'dosdevices' and changed permissions to 'Access Only'
- Right Clicked on 'drive_c' and changed permissions to 'Access Only'
Now I need to know how to set these permissions in order to lock them permanently. Keep in mind that I am a newbie and may not understand in depth lingo regarding the terminal.
