CentOS 5 Hardware :: Ata1 Device Not Ready - Error 16 Forces Hard Reset / Drop Network Connections

Sep 23, 2009

I have 4 Dell R200's with Seagate 2x250Gb drives running software raid on CentOS 5.2 kernal 2.6.18-92.1.13.el5. They all get these errors 5-10 times a day and when the errors occure the servers apear to freeze and drop all network connections, very frustrating. I've updated to smartmontools 1:5.38-2.el5 and confirmed with Seagate that I have the latest drive firmware, and am now at a loss as to how to fix this. All of the systems report the problem only on sda not sdb.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - Boot System Forces Hard Reset

May 6, 2009

I'm new to Linux, tried Ubuntu, had slow boot problems, tried openSUSE 11.1, still have slow boot problems. The issue seems to be that the ata.0 device is slow to respond (ERROR= -16), the boot system forces a hard reset, then a soft reset, configures for UDMA 133, says the drive is ready, then does it again, three times, and then configures the drive for UDMA 100. It's a brand new Western Digital Caviar drive, and windowsXP likes it just fine. Once SUSE boots, everything seems to work just fine. I thought the problem might be with the drive jumpers, so I reset them from cable detect to master/single. No change in the problem.

OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Use Network Manager After Hard Reset

Jul 19, 2010

I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and works great except two problems.

1. it was installed on Thinkpad W500, and its sleep mode doesn't work, the computer cannot wake up from sleep mode.

2. After a hard reset due to stuck at sleep mode, the KDE network manager couldn't find any network interface anymore, even I tired to disable and enable "user Controlled with NetworkManager in Network Settings, still same problem. it always say "network management disabled" regardless the network manager checkbox status in Network Settings. On the other hand, Traditional Method with ifup can detect the my wireless and ethernet ports and work under ifup method.

so does anyone has idea about
1. how to configure the sleep mode for laptop?
2. how to bring back the network manager again? (I have "user controlled with network manager" checked in network settings.

Ubuntu One :: Forces Separate Device For Tomboy Authorization

Jul 29, 2010

Before I submit a bug, I wanted to see if anyone can tell me why this happens. When I first start using UO, it requested that I add my computer to my UO account. I entered the name of my machine, ie. "desktop-name". Once I did that, the music store worked properly, and I was able to use the Evolution Contacts sync and regular files in the ~/UbuntuOne folder. These all showed up in my web interface.

Now, when I set up Tomboy to sync with UO (Tomboy Web), it sends me to the Confirm Computer Access page again, asking me to put in my device name again. So I enter again "desktop-name" and it logs in and Tomboy syncs. The problem is that two devices now show up under Machines, and also under System > Preferences > UbuntuOne > Devices. I've tried deleting both devices, and starting from scratch as described here but it always does the same thing.

Is there a reason I must have two devices listed when I'm on the same system? Has anyone else noticed this? FWIW, each confirmation request lists a different token, it just seems that once I have authorized my system, that all the sync connections should auth under the same credentials.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Device Not Ready?

Sep 6, 2010

I've tried to install Linux systems have been failures. Trying to make this work, trying to get on the right wagon, and it's frustrating as all get-out.

Installed netbook remix onto a HP Mini 1000 (1116NR?) and everything seems to be working alright, except no wireless networking. I tried a couple of things and now it shows "device not ready" instead of "disabled", so I figure I'm getting somewhere.

The device is:

Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)

I want in. This is my 3rd try over the years of running Linux and I always hit snags like this that I can't fix because I've never gotten to play with it enough to learn what I'm doing and generally don't have a 2nd computer like I do right now.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Networks - Device Not Ready

This morning I installed Fedora 14 on my laptop. During the setup, I was able to configure the wireless connection and use it to install additional software from the FreshRPMs and Livna repos. When the install was completed, I was surprised to find the wireless not working. When I click on the NetworkManager icon at the bottom right corner, I see "Wireless Networks" Under that it says "device not ready" and it is greyed out so it cannot be click on.

Previously with F11 I connected without problems but now the wireless connection presents a "Device not ready" message. I tried to switch on/off the wireless card but without results. I had to set intel_iommu=off as kernel parameter to complete the boot. Is something related to it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless - Device Not Ready - Firmware Missing

I thought I'd give Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal??) a try on an old Dell Latitude D600 I had lying around. Install went great. Everything seems to run nice and slick.. except one thing.. the wireless is giving me the old "Device not ready (firmware missing)" So I can only use my lappy on a leash.

It's a pretty common Broadcom NIC... and I've tried running the System / Administration / Additional Drivers and nothing comes up.

It seems to me I need a driver someplace...I don't know where or how to get it installed.

Fedora Networking :: Airport Extreme / NM Forces WEP Key - "Connect To Hidden Wireless Network"

Feb 27, 2009

Kernel: 2.6.27.15-170.2.24.fc10.i686
WLAN: Broadcom BCM4311

Problem: I run WPA2 Personal encryption on all my wireless devices. At work we use Cisco WAPs and I can connect flawlessly, simply by entering the password. At home I use Apple's Timemachine, which is basically an Airport Extreme A/B/G/N router.

I go to Network Manager and choose "Connect to Hidden Wireless Network". I enter in the SSID of my home wireless, choose WPA2 Personal, and enter in the password. After ~1 minute Network Manager spits back a window requesting the WEP key.... But I'm not running WEP. This is extremely frustrating. I delete the network and try again... same behaviour. My assumption is that this may be isolated to Airport Extreme network devices but I'd really love to find a fix. Just FYI: I have a MacBook Pro and a system running Vista that connect without a hitch.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot Fails: Can't Find Root Device + Drop To Shell

Dec 27, 2010

From one day to the other my system stopped booting properly. Since I (finally) fixed it, I wanted to share my solution. It runs on a fakeraid pair of SSD's of 60 GB each (actually a single Revodrive device, but it shows up as two devices). When Ubuntu 10.10 boots, I'm dropped to a shell.During boot, when I removed "silent splash" from the kernel's command line, I got these messages:

Code:

[ 4.960240] scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA OCZ-REVODRIVE 1.20 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 4.960425] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdg] 117231408 512-byte logical blocks: (60.0 GB/55.8 GiB)

[cod]....

I doubt that this is what was needed (as I had that already when it didn't work, but I might be required in addition to installing dmraid)

# update-initramfs -a

After installing this, the problem was solved!! This is strange since I don't recall uninstalling this package or changing anything important, for that matter (perhaps did apt-get upgrade, but that's about it!). [URL]
