CentOS 5 :: Dual Boot With Windows RAID And Drive Combination

I have a pre-existing setup with Windows XP Professional and CentOS5.5 on a dual boot setup with the Linux drive setup as the primary drive hosting the grub menu.
I am replacing these machines with new updated ones and they have windows setup on a RAID0. I think it would be easiest to follow my previous setup and move the RAID to secondary SATA ports and put the linux drive on the primary SATA port, or should I just change the boot order in the BIOS to have the secondary linux drive boot first?
can I move a RAID setup to secondary controller ports without breaking the RAID?

Currently I have windows 7 x64 installed on a pair of raided ssd's using an x58 motherboard(ich10r) and I want to duel boot ubuntu x64 (either 9.10 or 10.04) on another harddrive (not part of the raided ssd's). Does anyone know if this can be done? I haven't found anything out there about this. I have tried to install Ubuntu from the CD. It gets to the install screen booting from the CD, but it doesn't let me install or try Ubuntu. I hit enter and nothing happens. I can look through all of the options but can't install or boot into Ubuntu.

I did some linux installation in the past but never get along with it. now I decided to give it another shot because I need it for the information security class I'm taking.
I have a gigabyte ga-p35-ds3 with 2 WD 320GB HD on a raid 0 array (motherboard raid). I have windows 7 x64 already installed on the raid and would like to install ubuntu 9.10 x64 dual boot with it.
The problem is that the installation does not recognize the win7 on the disk, it does recognize the raid as 1 640GB disk but with nothing on it so I can't processed with the installation without loosing the win7 installation with everything on it.
another weird thing is that after I quit the ubuntu installation and restart the computer the raid 0 fail to load. after I shutdown the computer and start it again the raid is up again and the win7 loading ok.
I have to install it in a dual boot with win 7 without reinstalling everything from scratch.

Q1) I was wondering if it is possible to Dual boot Ubuntu with Windows XP on a 1TB RAID-0 setup ?
Q2) Also, is it possible to create a SWAP partition (for Ubuntu) on a NON RAID-0 HDD ?
Q3) Lastly... I read GRUB2 is the default boot manager... should I use that, or GRUB / Lio ?
I have a total of 3 HDDs on this system:
-- 2x 500GB WDD HDDs (non-advanced format) ... RAID-0 setup
-- 1x 320GB WDD HDD (non RAID setup)
(The non RAID HDD is intended to be a SWAP drive for both XP and Ubuntu = 2 partitions)
I plan on making multiple partitions... and reserve partition space for Ubuntu (of course).
I have the latest version of the LiveCD created already.
Q4) Do I need the Alternate CD for this setup?
I plan on installing XP before Ubuntu.
This is my 1st time dual booting XP with Ubuntu.

3 partitions (in order): Windows 7, CentOS and shared data partition.
I need to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (c:windowswinsxs seems to be something not easily remedied).
GParted didn't work in moving things around (bad sector) so I wiped out its partition (# 2 out of 3) and I was able to increase the size of the Windows 7 partition (I can reinstall CentOS easily and not much work lost).
Except ... no more grub menu (unsurprising). This incantation does allow me to boot into Windows 7.
Is there any way of rebuilding the grub menu short of reinstalling CentOS (5.5)?

I have installed Ubuntu on my m1530 since 8.04 and currently dual boot Win7 and 10.10. I would like to dual boot on my PC, but I have run into a problem. I am not a pro at Ubuntu, but this problem I can not solve by reading forums like I have in the past.
I realize this is a common problem, but I have noticed people having success.
I have a M4A87TD EVO MB with two Seagate drives in Raid 0. (The raid controller is a SB850 on that MB) I use the raid utility to create the raid drive that Windows7x64 uses. I have 2 partitions and 1 unused space. Partition 1 is Windows, partition 2 is for media, and the remaining unused space is for Ubuntu.
I am running ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 off a Cruzer 16GB flash drive that was installed via Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.4.
My problem like so many others is that when I load into Ubuntu, gparted detects two separate hard drives instead of the raid. I read that this is because kpartx is not installed on 10.10. I then went in LiveCD mode and downloaded kpartx from Synaptic Manager. Gparted still reported two drives. I opened terminal and run a few commands with kpartx. I received an error. (Forgive me I didn't write it down, but I believe it said something about a communication error. I will try again later and see.)
Currently I am reflashing the Cruzer with a persistence of 4GB. I am not familiar with this process, but I understand that my LiveCD boot will save information I download to it. I decided to try this method because I was going to install kpartx and reboot to see if this made a difference.
I am looking for any suggestions on a different method or perhaps someone to tell me that the raid controller or some hardware isn't supported. I did install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64 on my flash drive, but fail to get past detecting my CD-ROM drive since it's not plugged in. If this method is viable, I will plug it in. I also watched the ..... video were a guy creates Raid 0 with the alternated CD, but it wasn't a dual boot and didn't use a raid controller from a MB.

After going back & forth between win7b & F10 installs, I can't get both to live on the same hard disk for dual booting anymore. win7 complains about fedora's GPT disk being unacceptable for installation. win7 blows away fedora's GPT partitions when it installs. Fedora doesn't recognize win7 partitions when it installs. I can't specify exact partition boundaries with windows even if I know what they are, and I can't seem to find any info how to do it in parted either. I have win7 installed in partition 3 in a known location on disk, but if I reinstall f10 (again), it's going to blow away the win7 boot data on the disk. How do I tell grub where to find the chainloader thingy? Can that still even be used? win7 no longer uses ntldr, and I haven't found an updated procedure for this new boot method.

I have Windows XP installed. And I also plan to install CentOS 5.4.I have two hard drives. Hitachi 500 GB and WD 500 GB.Windows XP is intalled on first drive And I plan to install Linux on Second drive. And since i find some contradicting and not understood by me posts. I have to be sure what to do. I can install Linux, then i can edit grub. and add there something like:

When its on one drive as I understand it will definately work. But if its on 2 different drives. There is a problem that windows doesn't boot from secondary drive. So I find this article witch i cannot understand. Do i have to understand it? Or its wrong and bad decision.

It's been a real battle, but I am getting close.I won't go into all the details of the fight that I have had, but I've almost made it to the finish line. Here is the set up. ASUS Z8PE-D18 mother board 2 CPU, 8 Gig Ram. I recently added an OCZ Agility SSD, defined a raid 1 virtual disk on the 1 terabyte WD HDD drives, which will holds all of my user data, the SSD is for executables.The bios is set to AHCI. Windows 7 installed fine, recognizes the raid VD just fine.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 by first booting into try and mode, then opening a terminal and issuing a "sudo dmraid -ay" command. Then performing the install. I told it to install the raid components, and told it to let me specify the partitions manually. When setting up the partitions, I told it to use the free space I set aside on the SSD from the Windows 7 install as ext4 and to mount root there. Ubuntu installed just fine, grub2 comes up just fine, and Windows 7 boots with out a hitch, recognizing the mirrored partition as I indicated previously. When I tell grub to boot linux however, it pauses and I get the "no block devices found" message. It will then boot, but it does not recognize the raid array. After Ubuntu starts up I can run "dmraid -ay" and it recognizes the raid array, but shows the two component disks of the raid array as well. It will not allow the component disks to be mounted, but they show up which is annoying. (I can live with that if I have to)
I have fixed a similar problem before by setting up a dmraid script in /etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top ... following the instructions found at the bottom of this blog:[URL].. To recap: My problem is that after grub2 fires up Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (Lucid Lynx), it pauses, and I get "no block devices found" It then boots but does not recognize the raid array untill I manually run "dmraid -ay". I've hunted around for what to do but I have not found anything. It may be some timing issue or something, but I am so tired of beating my head against this wall.

I *had* a server with 6 SATA2 drives with CentOS 5.3 on it (I've upgraded over time from 5.1). I had set up (software) RAID1 on /boot for sda1 and sdb1 with sdc1, sdd1, sde1, and sdf1 as hot backups. I created LVM (over RAID5) for /, /var, and /home. I had a drive fail last year (sda).After a fashion, I was able to get it working again with sda removed. Since I had two hot spares on my RAID5/LVM deal, I never replaced sda. Of course, on reboot, what was sdb became sda, sdc became sdb, etc.So, recently, the new sdc died. The hot spare took over, and I was humming along. A week later (before I had a chance to replace the spares, another died (sdb).Now, I have 3 good drives, my array has degraded, but it's been running (until I just shut it down to tr y.
I now only have one replacement drive (it will take a week or two to get the others).I went to linux rescue from the CentOS 5.2 DVD and changed sda1 to a Linux (as opposed to Linux RAID) partition. I need to change my fstab to look for /dev/sda1 as boot, but I can't even mount sda1 as /boot. What do I need to do next? If I try to reboot without the disk, I get insmod: error inserting '/lib/raid456.ko': -1 File existsAlso, my md1 and md2 fail because there are not enough discs (it says 2/4 failed). I *believe* that this is because sda, sdb, sdc, sdd, and sde WERE the drives on the raid before, and I removed sdb and sdc, but now, I do not have sde (because I only have 4 drives) and sdd is the new drive. Do I need to label these drives and try again? Suggestions? (I suspect I should have done this BEFORE failure).Do I need to rebuild the RAIDs somehow? What about LVM?

I have (3) 60GB SSD. I want to use (2) in RAID 0 for Ubuntu and (1) alone for Windows 7.
What is the best way to get about this? I know how to create the RAID 0 array with the (2) disks and install Ubuntu on it. But how do I get the RAID array with Linux on it to dual boot with Windows 7?

I'm having a problem installing RHEL-5 on my system. I have Windows 7 installed so far on a Dell XPS workstation that came with hardware RAID 0. I have 2 x 500 gb hard drives. So I went in Win 7 and partitioned my disk to leave about 75 gb of unallocated space to install RHEL-5 on. I load the RHEL-5 DVD into my disk, restart my comp, and just follow installation steps. Use about 73 GB as an ext3 partition for the RHEL-5 and have about 2 GB reserved for swap space. RHEL-5 installs, and I'm all done. However, when I reboot the computer, the GRUB boot loader fails to load. I'm directly taken into Windows. How do I recover GRUB so I have the option of loading into RHEL-5?

I was trying to dual boot ubuntu on my desktop which has windows 7 already installed on it with raid 0. I have 2 500GB hard drive and when I boot from cd and try to install ubuntu it only detect one of my hard drives and it said I only have 500GB and there is no OS installed on this machine! I just installed SUSE 11.2 as dual-boot with WinXP on an older system that has a 160GB PATA drive and a 500GB SATA RAID drive. I left about 80GB on the PATA drive unpartitioned to accommodate SUSE. During the initial installation attempt, SUSE was determined to install on the RAID drive instead of the PATA drive, so I disabled the SATA drivers in the BIOS to force the installation on the PATA drive. This was successful, but now there is no access to the RAID drive from SUSE because there is no driver and it is not mounted. I reactivated the SATA drivers in the BIOS and the RAID drive reappeared in WinXP with everything intact. The SATA drives now appear in SUSE under Hardware Information as "/dev/sdb" and "/dev/sdc" and the listed driver is "sata_sil".
So how do I get the RAID drivers installed in SUSE and then mount the drive so it can be browsed/modified from Dolphin? I would also like to be able to browse/change this drive from other computers on my home network through samba, just like with WinXP.

I originally wanted to dual install 10.10 64 Ubuntu with Windows 7 64 RAID 1 HP PC, but RAID got corrupted and I could find no fix online except using fakeraid unsupported software. The whole thing blew my muind. I gave up after 4 or so reinstalls of windows 7 to fix RAID. So I decided to install a dual boot 10.10 Ubuntu i86 with my old WinXP i86. I kept getting these errors at boot up: unknown filesystem, file not found, out of disk, no such partion and so on. I tried just about every grub reinstall I could find, including article here: "Recovering Ubuntu after Installing Windows."
After a number of tries my friend installed Ubuntu successfully, but then when I installed windows xp I am stuck here, again. I did do the Reload grub tutorials again as well. I may just give up on WinXP and have my friend reinstall Ubuntu for me.

I am currently with Wubi 10.04 under Vista and my Dell XPS 630i has a 1 TB Nvidia RAID controller.First image (Option A) suggests /dev/sda as device for boot loader installation, while second image (Option B) suggests /dev/mapper/nvidia_bcidhdja.I think that the way of keeping the RAID would be using Option B as the device for boot loader installation. Would Option A break the RAID instead?

I've just installed ubuntu 10.10 (64bit) on my 1TB drive where as I have my windows drives on a seperate 2x 1TB drives in RAID and am not exactly sure how to mount it.
I am not finding it under computer or under NTFS configuration tool and when I click mount under storage device manager it does nothing, although does detect the RAID array as /dev/sda2

I am attempting to set up an IBM Intellistation Z Pro to optionally boot from many OS versions. One of these is Windows XP. Windows XP is currently installed on a RAID 1 device consisting of a pair of 1 GB WD drives. These are SATA drives. The HBA I'm using is a SYBA SATA II card that uses Silicon Image's SIL3124-2 chip. The card has a BIOS and I've set up two 60 GB mirrors for Windows. I boot XP fine from this setup and things run good.
I've downloaded the CentOS 5.2 images and am able to start the installation process. I'm baffled on where to install the OS software on the RAID device. The installation process shows the two 1GB drives as separate drives and there is no acknowledgment of the 60 GB partition I've already created on them for Windows XP. I expected to see only the one logical RAID device and 60 GB of it in use for a NTFS partition. Reluctant to proceed further, I bailed on the install and am asking for advice on how to proceed.
The big question is
1) How can I install CentOS 5.2 on the RAID drive to coexist with a Windows XP installation? My desire is to boot either from this drive.
other questions related to this are:
2) Why does the CentOS partitioning software used for the install not display the logical RAID drive set up through BIOS (I'm assuming that this means it was set up apart from any Windows drivers etc.)? Only the two physical drives are displayed and there is no mention of any partitions in use.

I'm having serious troubles to install ubuntu-10.04.1. My raid is an hardware raid with intel chipset. Note that win7 is already installed and working with my raid. I made some space from windows, to install Ubuntu (40gb). First, I run the installer, everything seems to be fine. I choose to install Ubuntu were there is the most space free (sorry, I'm not sure about the real terms used there).
Then my partition with the vista loader appears. So the installer can see my raid, and should work fine (everything is detected correctly). But once I'm in the end of the installation (around 95%), a pop-up appears, and tells me that Grub can't install in /dev/sda and it's a fatal error. I can choose an another destination, but it doesn't seems to work.

hey guys i am trying "again" to dual boot on my gaming computer, and i am failing miserably. i boot the cd, it detects the hard drive i set the partitions and press finish and either on the partitioning or the files copying the installer crashes. what can i do to make it work with raid 0 (nvidia chipset).
