CentOS 5 :: Bad User Permission With Adduser Command

Dec 1, 2010

i know some UNIX commands and some centos/linux commands anyway i need help setting up my centos VPS. I recieved the server the today and i wax given a SSH login which i quickly figured out how to use however for many actions including opening SFTP i need to have a non root useraccount form which i have none, so i preceeded to create a new account(adduser username, passwd username) however now if i try to log into SSH, SFTP with the new account i get a message Access is Denied. I need some help and the company hosting the server seems to be pretty useless for actual support, i think they assume VPS owners to have a reasonable amount of linux knowledge.

For example, a user "tester" login to SSH through 192.168.1.1 and another user login with the same login id "tester" but from different ip 192.168.1.2.

How do I restrict 192.168.1.2 to only allow for viewing the content in the home directory while giving 192.168.1.1 full access?

Debian Installation :: Install Script Can't Find Adduser

Jul 29, 2014

Just upgraded to wheezy from squeeze, and trying to resolve a few problems that appeared.

I get an error when installing pulseaudio (and a few other packages). Looks like the install script can't find 'adduser':

Code: Select allSetting up pulseaudio (2.0-6.1) ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/pulseaudio.postinst: 22: /var/lib/dpkg/info/pulseaudio.postinst: adduser: not found
dpkg: error processing pulseaudio (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 127

If I 'sudo su -' then 'adduser' is on the path, so why can the install script not find it?

Ubuntu Servers :: ProFTPD - Useradd Fails But Adduser Ok

Aug 4, 2010

Proftpd is installed and running fine on 8.04 server. I want to streamline the process of adding users. Adding a ftp user with USERADD fails (user is created but connection fails when trying to connect with ftp client).

Code:
useradd -d /ftp/ftphome/myuser -g ftp -m -p mypassword -s /usr/sbin/nologin myuser
But, ADDUSER works:
Code:
adduser myuser
usermod -d /ftp/ftphome/myuser -g ftp -m -p mypassword -s /usr/sbin/nologin myuser

It's a bother because I want to automate the process, and ADDUSER has all those prompts and asks for the password twice.

Security :: Permission Configuration For SFTP User?

Jun 8, 2011

I've run into my first Linux/Unix roadblock and need support. I am creating a user strictly for SFTP and need them to login to a specific folder as well as set their navigate, write, and read permissions appropriatly but am having trouble. I was able to modify /etc/passwd to change their home location upon login but was warned that it was a bit dangerous to modify this file, even though my login test worked, and that I should look for an alternate solution in case shadow passwords were used. I'm reading up on chmod and understand the binary relationship but still can't seem to put the pieces together for each folder I'm working in. Below is what I need to satisfy: username for this test will be 'customer'

Example folder: /storage/company/files

1. User 'customer' needs to login to /storage/company/ by default.

2. User 'customer' needs browse, write, and read permissions to /storage/company/ and ALL files and subdirectories within this folder

3. User 'customer' must be UNABLE to navigate backwards toward folder root / or in general, navigate out of their primary home location.

That is, the user that is using GDM right now, or the one that is logged into the current console. (by current console, I don't mean the user running the script, but rather the user logged into the console currently displayed on the screen.)How can this be done?

Code:

ACTIVE_USER=`somecommand`

What can I use for "somecommand"?
