CentOS 5 :: A2ps Not Printing Correctly / What To Do?

Mar 24, 2009

I used to be able to print pretty, two-pages per side using a2ps, but lately, I can not do that. It would print with wrong orientation and/or with much bigger font.

I compared /etc/a2ps.cfg and /etc/a2ps-site.cfg files from another working CENTOS machine, and they are the same, but a2ps command still doesn't print nice and pretty. I don't have any other config files that control a2ps

a2ps is 4.13 and my linux kernel version is 2.6.18-92.1.22.el5.

Has anyone experienced this weird behavior from a2ps?

CentOS 5 :: Administration --> Printing Dialog Freezes Centos 5.6

Aug 10, 2011

if I choose Administration --> Printing and then try to select a printer from the list of available printers (to delete a printer for example), the dialog
freezes and needs to be terminated forcibly. It seems like I can hit "New Printer" and add a printer without anything freezing. All of the printers on the list are
network printers.

Possibly related- if I use evince to view and document and then attempt to print by going File --> Print, it gives me a printer selection box which also freezes if I try to choose a printer from the list.

CentOS 5 :: How To Set Up FTP Correctly

Dec 3, 2010

I've got Centos and Windows running on two PC's both behind my cable modem/fire wall. As such, I do not have the firewall operating on Centos. I wish to FTP using Filezilla on the Windows PC to the Centos server. I believe I have FTP operating correctly. Evidently, I can't (and shouldn't I am sure) use the root username. So, I made a new user called "Me". When I logon using Filezilla, I go to /home/Me. I can't make a file or anything, and once I leave the Me directory, it disappears. If I go to /var, it is empty. I then telenet to the server using PuTTY, and can do whatever I want in Me as well as go to /var. I expect it is some sort of permission issue, and have tried adding Me to the root group, but no luck.

CentOS 5 :: Yum Repo Not Working Correctly

Oct 28, 2009

I just created a repository for CentOS 5.3 and 5.4 on my webserver for the network to use. I followed the steps listed here: [URL] All went well up until testing out the repository. Here is the output of "yum update"

[root@titan yum.repos.d]# yum update
Loaded plugins: downloadonly, fastestmirror, priorities
Repository base is listed more than once in the configuration
Repository extras is listed more than once in the configuration

[Code].....

I'm unsure as to why yum is looking in the "5" directory instead of "5.3" or "5.4" and it looks like that is the only issue. It seems as though $releasever is returning 5 instead of the current 5.3 that this system is on.

I am running Cent0S 5.2 and am trying to get the gui running from startx at the console. When it loads half the screen is scrambled and I can see parts of the desk top. it looks like a video driver issue. I ran system-config-display --reconfig --set-depth=16 --set-resolution=1024x768 and then tried system-config-display --reconfig --set-depth=16 --set-resolution=800x600. It came out a little better but still half scrambled.

CentOS 5 :: GUI Is Not Loading Correctly - Startx - Gnome

Oct 26, 2009

I tried to kind of beautify my CentOS 5.3. So I kind of break some rules ( like compiling tar balls.. ). To cut it short, I installed avant window navigator ( source, compile, etc ). Before that I also installed compiz ( which made my desktop kind of much more *alive* ). Problem is there are some bugs on AWN, then I think my webcam got affected too ( not showing proper display ). I then decided to uninstall compiz thru YUM. After this, restarted my system, then whooppss my Gnome, won't load properly. the AWN was gone, then the bottom part of my desktop was just black. I only got a top menu, which whatever application I open there's no top bar on it ( where you see the name of the window ). Also every application just shows up on my upper left corner of the screen. So I definitely broke it. So I switched to another session ( Ctrl Alt F2 ) then went into a terminal. I tried to load again another X Session ( Ctrl Alt F8/F9 ), but nothing comes up, am I doing that wrong?

Now in cases like this where the GUI is not loading correctly, what work-arounds are usually made? I did some tweaks by guessing everything will kind of reset by renaming my gnome hidden folders, but no luck. What to do on this situations? Is it possible to kind of switch to pure terminal session, uninstall whole Gnome package there, remove some settings, reinstall Gnome and everything will be ok again? Or is it possible if Gnome is broke like kind of start a KDE session? How's this things relate to XOrg11.conf something? Could anyone just give like some overview like which sits on top of what.

Since I can't fix my problem yesterday I just reformatted laptop and reinstalled 5.3 with Virtualization checked, and I noticed my kernel says "xen". I thought of trying this builtin virtualization software because I had problems with VMWare before also.

My sysadmin updated the X-server for my CentOs 5.4 version without success. I am in contact with the firefox people, but no-one can reprpduce this problem. CentOS 5 :: Network Printer Not Printing In Gnome / 5.2

I connect across a LAN to a network printer HP Laserjet 1320n I have been through the printer installation / setup on both systems Fedora works fine, Centos doesn't want to know. Sending anything to print just adds it to a queue that is never printed.

I have looked at the printer management through Firefox browser localhost.localdomain:631 If I send a test page from here (CUPS) it reports the document as printed, but the printer just sits there blinking an orange light indicating an error.

CentOS 5 :: No Parallel Port Printing After Pm-suspend?

Oct 15, 2009

I use pm-suspend (from pm-utils-0.99.3-10.el5.centos.386) to put my CentOS computer (kernel 2.6.18-164.el5PAE) to sleep (power consumption decreases from 66 to 4 W). Hitting the computer power button reactivates the computer. But the parallel port connected HP LaserJet 6L no longer prints. Michael Sweet suggested this sounds like a parallel port driver isn't compatible with pm-suspend. Is there anything faster than shutting the computer down and restarting it to enable its parallel port printer? (After pm-suspend, command "reboot" fails to restart CentOS.)

General :: USB Printer Not Printing On Centos 5 Host XP Guest On VMware?

Centos 5 was set up for me on my server with VMware and XP SP3 as a guest. I have little to no knowledge of centos (or anything Linux) so i tend to leave well alone but i am trying to get a USB printer to work from my networked pcs through XP - Through VMware - Through Centos5 to the USB port on the back of my server. I am reasonably OK with XP but am not a techie so will probably need to be walked through this.

I can see the printer appearing on Centos' equivalent to device manager and when i print everything seems ok with the XP print queue clearing after a few seconds but nothing prints. At a guess i need some sort of software bridge- (is this SAMBA?).

CentOS 5 Networking :: Use VPN To Do Remote Printing On Windows Or Network Printer?

Feb 12, 2011

I have a virtual Linux box with a static IP in the cloud.

I have remote sites that have networked PCs that normally act as terminals but also have more than one printer on the Windows Network.

I would like software on the Window's machine to access the known IP address of the server and advertise the printers on the network so they can be printed to with lpr or cups. I don't have a problem manually setting up the printers on Centos if that is necessary. (But I need to know how to do that as well).

I need to know if I can setup a VPN on Windows without it stopping regular internet traffic and how to do it.

I need to know all the steps (what to install, what to issue commands for) to make this happen without using a GUI if possible and if the GUI is easier I need to know which GUI to install.

I also do not have a problem with using a VPN router at the client side if that makes it any easier. Like a Cisco RV120W.

Ubuntu :: Printing With Exact Size Photos And With Poor Auto Colour Printing But The Situation Remains Unchanged

May 31, 2010

I expected more from ubuntu 10.4 with regards to printing with exact size photos and with poor auto colour printing but the situation remains unchanged! for instance .. the photo size configurations for ubuntu/fspot/gimp and others are not compatible with my printers (HP and Brother) .. here in Europe a typical standard size photo (10x15inches or 150x100mm are not even on the Ubuntu listing? I have tried all listed possibilities including "custom" (which does not seem to ever work correctly?)and the result at best is photos with uneven boarders or at worse my printer goes a bit crazy with much wasted photo paper and expensive ink ...even photos selected for "no boarders" still produces photos with the self same uneven boarders.

I have tried pretty much everything over time following advice in this forum and including using HPlip and updating drivers required for my Brother printer but the root problem seemingly lies with the Ubunto photo size setup listing. Working with Ubuntu over the years I have found that it can do pretty much everything that Windows can do except for this dam ongoing photo quality and configuration problem.

CentOS 5 Server :: Dovecot/apache Not Working Properly - How To Make It Work Correctly

Mar 20, 2010

I am running a quad core centos 5.4 box that is having a strange problem with dovecot. The administration panel is able to send emails through dovecot but not any of the user accounts (ie with webmail). I've done a bit of research with what could be wrong but haven't had any luck so far I am also having a weird problem with apache: on a c++/php bittorrent application I was going to be running on a subdomain of my main site I get a 500 error every time I try to log in. The only way to get rid of the 500 error is to clear the chache (so its horribly broken somehow). The error generated in the log whenever I try to log in is that "ffmpeg is already loaded" (which I am running on the main site and is critical). Is there a way of either repairing my apache install or excluding ffmpeg on the subdomain in the conf or something?

CentOS 5 Server :: Cups & Samba -- Printing From WINXP Client As Postscript Fails?

Mar 14, 2009

Apologies if this was asked before -- I have googled the last bytes out of my Firefox but fail to find anything helpful. Here's my problem:I have a foomatic hpijs cups-driver for a HP Inkjet (Non-PS printer) installed. Printing from UNIX-hosts works. I have cups configured not to allow raw-printing (/etc/cups/mime.types: #application/octet-stream, /etc/cups/mime.convs: #application/octet-stream).I have now installed samba-printing, the cups PS-drivers plus the Windows PS-drivers are populated to /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/ and get pushed to the WIN-Client.Problem is that when I print from a WINXP client, the printer outputs heaps of Postscript-text instead of my page.I have tried to debug this a bit but fail to find anything really useful. My observations so far:

- The samba-pushed HP_Photosmart_3300.ppd (in both /etc/samba/drivers/... and in the resulting dir on the WINXP client) reads:
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 foomatic-rip"

Didn't work. Deleted xorg.cong, didn't work. Blank xorg.conf, didn't work. What happens is it shows the Ubuntu name and loading bar, loads, then at 100% it shows 2 of them in purple around the screen. Obviously X isn't loading correctly.

Ubuntu :: Resolution Can't Be Set Correctly

Mar 17, 2010

I just installed ubuntu 9.10 (latest version + updates) on my computer. I am new to the linux OS.I have a 1366x768 resolution monitor with a maximum vertical frequency of 60 hz. This worked well on windows. As I've already read in the internet, this can rise problems on Ubuntu. The monitor is connected through a switchbox, so it doesn't get recognised. Even if it's hooked up directly (Ubuntu recognises it) I can't choose the correct resolution.

Currently I can't use another graphics driver than the generic one. The screen stays black ("wrong vertical frequency" displayed on LCD Monitor) if I use another driver. I'd like to use the proprietary ATI/AMD fglrx driver. I edited the xorg.conf file, but I was unable to get the right resolution. It seems to be outdated on Ubuntu 9.10. After that fail, I searched for alternatives and ended up with a file called

45custom_xrandr-settings

in the "Xsession.d" folder. I'm using the following contents:

Code:

xrandr --newmode "1366x768_60.00" 85.86 1368 1440 1584 1800 768 769 772 795 -HSync +Vsync
xrandr --addmode VGA-0 "1366x768_60.00"
xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode 1366x768_60.00

But the monitor still complains that it's the wrong vertical frequency when I use the fglrx driver. The generic driver uses another resolution than the specified one (as always) and gives me a blurry picture on the screen. I have also tried other modelines, Ubuntu just doesn't seem to be able to display 1366x768@60hz.
