Applications :: Read Text That Scrolled Off The Screen In GNU Screen?

Jun 28, 2009

I've just dicovered GNU screen, a program that allows you to setup multiple terminals, from which you can detach and re-attach, so that you can have programs running in a session to a remote server and then log off from that server while the programs keep running! Great for over night copying jobs on my file server. the output of a command is rather long and the text scrolls off the screen. How do i scroll up to read the output? Shift + page up doesn't work...

Software :: Text Based Screen Cast - Ability To Copy And Paste Text From Screen Cast?

Jan 3, 2011

I'm looking for software which will allow me to record a screen-cast of a terminal based application, recording keystrokes, timing of keystrokes, and audio. I see a couple of advantages to this approach over video capture: Display independence: the viewer can display text in any resolution/style they want, not limited to the resolution of the recorded video. Ability to copy and paste text from the screencast.

Ubuntu :: Super Dark Laptop Screen / Couldn't Read Anything On Screen

Jul 18, 2010

I've had Windows XP installed on a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with 1 gig of ram and 70 gig hard disk. Today I decided to install Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition to ext3 partitions I made on the laptop's hard disk. The Ubuntu installation went fine, and Ubuntu was up and runnning. Then for fun, I checked the available WiFi networks in this apartment building. Six were secure but one WiFi was open, so I clicked it out of curiosity. Within seconds, my laptop's 15-inch screen went super-dark, nearly jet black.I couldn't read anything on the screen. Pictures and words were still on the screen, but just way too dark to read or to see with any clarity at all. I don't have a WiFi card in the laptop.Instead I use Verizon's usb727 air card on Verizon EVDO Mobile Broadband (3G)

I don't know if the free Wifi network hosed me in some way with a nasty trick (I don't have a WiFi card in the laptop--just the usb727 dongle which is an EVDO aircard), or if it was just coincidental that the screen went super dark seconds after clicking the open Wifi network in Ubuntu's network manager applet. When I reboot, I don't see anything anymore, not the POST, not Windows XP booting up, or Ubuntu booting up. The only way I see anything now is to connect the laptop to an external monitor using the laptop's blue video connector. And even then, I still can't see the boot-up POST process, or the BIOS screen.I can only see Ubuntu or Windows XP after they've finished loading, and only on an external monitor. Did the new installation of Ubuntu hose my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop's screen, or was it the Wifi network, or did the screen just coincidentally go bad minutes after I installed Ubuntu and seconds after I clicked the open Wifi connection?

Ubuntu :: Switching Desktops From Full Screen Applications?

Feb 4, 2011

I'd like to run a number of applications full screen (e.g., VirtualBox, Vendetta Online) but I'd also like to switch to my other Gnome Desktops easily.

Unfortunately, these applications seem to intercept my default and all other hotkeys I have tried for switching desktops ... I know there is a solution for VirtualBox via the host key, but I am looking for something more "generic".

Is there, for example, any way to catch key strokes in Gnome/Compiz before the full screen app receives them?

Ubuntu :: How Does Karmic Set Text Console Screen Resolution

Jan 21, 2010

I'm trying to track down a screen resolution issue (Karmic on an Acer SK20 [Intel 945 graphics] with Acer AL1511 flat panel via VGA) and mechanism for setting the framebuffer screen resolution after GRUB2 has loaded the kernel but before X starts.

Before I forced it to behave itself by adding an xorg.conf with a lone "Modes" entry for 1024x768, X was setting the panel to 640x350 by default. It appears from looking at get-edid | parse-edid that this is because 640x350 is the only resolution this idiot panel's EDID says it knows about, even though its native resolution is in fact 1024x768.

So the GUI works fine now, but all the text consoles (Ctrl-Alt-F1 through F6) are still operating at 640x350 and look terrible; also, because usplash doesn't know what to do with 640x350, I don't get my nice white Ubuntu logo before GDM starts.

In previous releases, I would have dealt with something like this by adding vga=791 to the kernel boot options. That doesn't work for the Karmic kernel, and GRUB2 whines about it being deprecated and tells me to use "set gfxpayload=1024x768x16,1024x768" on a line before the "linux" command instead.

Things I have already tried, with no success:

1. Adding "set gfxpayload=1024x768x16,1024x768" into the boot sequence, right before the "linux" line, by using GRUB2's inbuilt boot sequence editor (Ctrl-E): no change.

2. Changing the GRUB_GFXMODE= line in /etc/default/grub and running update-grub: changes the resolution used for GRUB's own menu, but as soon as the kernel boots it's back to 640x350 on text consoles.

3. Same as (2) but also adding a "set gfxpayload=keep" line in /etc/grub.d/00_header, right after the "set gfxmode=${GRUB_GFXMODE}" line: same effect as (2).

4. Removing the "splash" option from the "linux" line. No change (I guess this is because usplash didn't work anyway at 640x350). By the way, usplash.conf is set up for 1024x768 and yes, I did remember to dpkg-reconfigure -phigh usplash to rebuild the initramfs after checking this.

where exactly does Karmic set the screen resolution for its text consoles, and how can I force it to ignore this LCD panel's bogus EDID?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Read In The 1/4 Second The Error Lasts On Screen Before The Grub Prompt

Jul 14, 2011

This morning I ran an upgrade which upgraded the kernel from 2.6.35-28 to 2.6.35-30 on my Maverick system. I then departed for a meeting and came back to discover that my system had rebooted itself and only booted into an initramfs prompt.

Rebooting again shows a very brief flashing message of "error: unknown filesystem" alongside a few other errors I cannot read in the 1/4 second the error lasts on screen before the grub prompt. Neither kernel boot nor recovery mode options take me anywhere except to the initramfs prompt. I have searched and found a few threads on similar issues, but they all involve different fixes and suggest causes (such as dual booting on an ntfs drive, which I do not do) such that I am unsure where to go from here.
