Ubuntu :: Flash Crashing All Browsers

Mar 27, 2011

i am using 64-bit ubuntu 10.04 and recently upgraded my drivers to catalyst 11.2 (ati mobility radeon 5470). lately my flash has been crashing constantly, to the point where i've uninstalled it so i can use the internet. the browser eventually recovers on websites like facebook and the worst culprit, gmail (videos is hopeless), and does so immediately if i "killall npviewer.bin" - firefox will go unresponsive for about 30 seconds then recover, and depending on the website it will go unresponsive again - on gmail this only takes a few seconds. it happens in firefox, epiphany, and chromium. i think this problem looks familiar and there was some fix by editing a text file somewhere, but i can't find that problem i remember anymore so i can't check.

Ubuntu :: All Browsers Keep Crashing

May 7, 2011

i've got an annoying problem. on a regular basis my browsers keep crashing out on various websites. videos, newgrounds, etc. one moment i'm doing something, the next thing, it just froze. firefox 4, opera 11.10 and chrome 11. each crash is different, but they crash never the less. firefox freezes and when i try to close it, the whole screen turns to a blank light blue. after a moment a message pops up to allow it to be forcefully terminated. opera is similar. chrome is different. you just cannot shut it down for quite some time. i'm guessing it has something to do with flash, but i'm already running the latest version with the help of flash-aid.

Ubuntu :: All Browsers Still Crashing On 11.04

Jul 31, 2011

I am still in progress of testing 11.04 on my HP probook 6550b. This is basically rather current and standard intel based notebook with M520/2.4ghz and intel HD graphic i5. 11.04 runs on it either with unity or classic, but regardless of which gui I use, browsers do crash all the time. Tried firefox with default extensions, then seamonkey and then chromium. Nothing works really. I am not able to run any search in this forum for example, this will make any of the browsers crash. The kernels I tried are standard 32bit as well as -pae variety. Everything seemed to be more stable on real 64bit ubuntu, but number of software does not work here, so not real alternative. Any experience with browsers permanently crashing on 11.04? Example of crash readout of the firefox:

Ubuntu :: Various Web Browsers Crashing / Screen Freezing

Oct 22, 2010

Firefox 3.6.11, Chromium 6, Google Chrome 7, they all crash or freeze on me and I can't figure out what is going on. I'm on a fresh/clean install of 10.10 with all updates installed. I've tried reviewing all the logs in /var/logs/ but didn't find anything unusual although I might have missed something. I'm using the proprietary nVidia driver for my video card (GeForce FX 5500 - 173.x drivers) so I'm not sure if that may have something to do with it or that it may be my NIC card? I've gone to the NIC card manufacturers website (Realtek) for updated drivers, but the site says the drivers are built in to the kernel and there is no download available. It seems as though the only time it crashes or the screen freezes (sometimes with the lights blinking on my keyboard) is when I'm browsing the internet.

I *do* have sound with Rhythmbox or when playing games, eg bzflag.

I have tried removing firefox and downloading the tarball version from Mozilla. I have tried running firefox as root. I have upgraded to the latest firefox and latest flash.

Ubuntu :: Flash Video Freezes All Browsers

Oct 14, 2010

I don't know what happened, but sometime within the last week I have started having a really annoying issue. Whenever I open a web page, that contains embedded Flash, in any browser (Firefox, Google Chrome, Chromium, or Opera), the entire browser, and all windows and tabs, freezes for about :15 seconds or so. After that time, everything unfreezes and works as normal, except for the video which often times doesn't even play after the freeze occurs. I don't believe I have made any major changes to my system, just the updates that show up in the notification area.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Flash No Longer Works In 64bit Web Browsers

Jul 17, 2010

I installed 64bit flash last week when I installed Ubuntu 10.04 64bit on my new laptop, and for the past week it has worked without issues.

However a couple of day ago it simply stopped showing flash videos on sites such as ..... etc. I think there might have been a ream of updates around the time this happened but my memory is a little vague.

I have since tried installing the each of the 3 flash codecs in turn that Firefox recommends but these will not install, failing with an exit status of 2. After I tried this I followed the 64bit flash instructions on the Wiki once more to get back to the point when it previously worked but alas this has been of no help.

I have also tried loading flash videos in Chromium and these suffer from the same issue. Anyone have any ideas what could have caused flash to suddenly stop working?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Flash Works Fine In All Browsers Except SwitfoX?

Dec 7, 2010

i'm running 10.04 x64, with the latest versions of google chrome, chromium, opera, epiphany, firefox, and swiftfox.

strangely, flashplayer works fine in all of them except swiftfox, where it presents a garbled, unclickable video window (tested in videos).

all my other ff addons and plugins seem to work ok in swiftfox, so i assumed that swiftfox is just reading and using everything in ~/.mozilla, including flash. but perhaps not. anyone have any idea why ff's flashplayer doesn't work in swiftfox?

Ubuntu :: Firefox & Chromium Crashing With Flash?

Jul 16, 2011

After updating to Natty Narwhal, Chromium began to occasionally crash, with the screen going black except for the mouse, which would freeze seconds later. Any sound playing will loop the last second or so, and no keyboard commands have any effect. As far as I can tell only a hard restart works.

The exact same thing happens with Firefox as well, except that Firefox freezes with the screen image, not blackness.

It is not consistent, but has been getting more frequent, and I have noticed a pattern of the crashes being associated with paying Flash video, and is almost certain with such.

I have tried updating Flash, Chromium, and running the Update manager roughly daily for a while now.

I can follow instructions well and usually actually understand what you're talking about.

Fedora :: FF 3.5.5 And Flash 10 (Adobe Repo) Crashing

Dec 14, 2009

I'm using the Mozilla version (tar.gz) of FF 3.5.5 and I'm using the Adobe Repo to install Flash 10. Everytime I go to a Flash site (....., Hulu, Amazon VOD) the browser crashes. If I use the Fedora Repo version of FF (also 3.5.5) then the crashing is much less frequent, although it does still happen. I tried making a symbolic link from the flash-plugin directory under /usr/lib/flash-plugin into the /home/user/firefox/plugins directory, but still no dice. How do I get Flash to behave properly with my Mozilla version of FF 3.5.5...any tips?

Slackware :: Flash Player Crashing All The Time In X86_64 ?

Mar 28, 2011

i was having severe problems under slackware64-current with the adobe flash player plugin for firefox. browsing and watching videos on videos was a pain in the neck with the player crashing when opening a couple of tabs, and constant lockups for several seconds while the plugin wrapper that was running it was taking one cpu core for itself.

it seems the problem stems from a recent change in glibc that modified the memcpy implementation and caused a bit of havok in some packages. i'm guessing it's the same change (or a similar one) that caused problems with sysklogd and iptraf, among others, with strcpy and overlapping strings. remember the patches:

[url]
[url]

strictly speaking, those are problems in the program source code, but most people seem to think it's a bad idea to provide a memcpy that doesn't work for overlapping strings. a bit of discussion can be found here, with a few priceless comments by torvalds:

[url]

it seems the source code for the flash player plugin probably contains this bug, as manually modifying the libflashplayer.so binary to replace memcpy calls with memmove calls fixes the problems. at least it clearly did for me.

a quick recipe can be extracted from that bugzilla entry and one of its attachments.

for example:

code:

that should modify the binary in place provided it's located at ~/.mozilla/plugins. the resulting binary is not distributable but the recipe is.
