while downloading the updates, jersey central power had a power failure thus screwing up my router temporarily and completely screwing up the downloads; now back up and running, the update systems is not saying I need the updates but obviously I do;how do I go back to the point to get the updates?
View 4 Repliesi have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

my problem : when i add factory repos (core and extra) for kde install of packages from yast is ok when switching system packages to these. but after reboot i have floating point exceptions and a black screen and can' t boot anymore. the only way out i found so far is to zypper dup to go back to kde 4.4.4
I want to do some basic web hosting, mainly for the experience. I have verizon fios for my isp, and what i am wondering is can i have the public ip address that they give me when i connect out to the internet point back to my linux box?
The reason that i am asking this is because i want to register a .com and i would like to have that point back to my linux box, i have looked at a few services and it seems that godaddy.com will do this and they seem to be the best choice. Before i register the .com i turnd on my httpd server but i am not sure how to get the public ip point back to my box...?

Verizon fios like most isp's uses a dhcp connection meaning that the public ip address i get will change 1-2 a year. What i don't know is how can i setup my network at home preferably with iptables to have that public ip routed back to my linux box at home? I am using fedora 15 for those that are wondering...
Also when i enabled port forwarding and started my web server and tried loading http://mypublicipaddress in firefox i am directed to a verizon page with a login and password prompt.
I am aware that i will need to get certain information from my isp to have their public ip address routed back to my linux box but i am unware of what to ask them...?

1) What kind of questions and information do i need to ask and get from my isp? DNS info? Logins and Passwords?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI made a network install of a new 11.4 system yesterday. It went all fine, but I was suprised that at the end of the installation some 80 packages required updating.
So what's the point in installing obsolete versions first? A significant amount of time is wasted downloading and installing packages, which will be replaced shortly thereafter. Of course that's the way it works for a media-based installation, because one does not want to create, test and release new installation media everytime a package is updated. But in network installation all it would take is to use the repository with the updated version.
The only argument I could imagine is that an updated package could make the installation fail. Installation with original packages has gonew through some QA. Well yes, of course it's all software, so everything can fail. But when you install updates into your production system there is always the theoretical risk that they contain a fatal bug causing damage. For a new installation the damage would be much smaller, should the installation fail because an untested combination of package version happens not to install cleanly.
Since I've installed opensuse 11.4 instead of 11.3, I cannot install .rpm packages nor execute updates. I get the following message: "There has been a (probably temporarily) when connecting to the software source/repository" (own translation) details: Media source [URL] does not contain the desired medium So, probably there is something wrong with my software sources. Could anyone give a suggestion to repair this since I'm not a linux expert and would like to install new software on my newly updated machine.

View 5 Replies View Relatedi am trying to install opensuse 11.2 to my vaio laptop i have win7 pro 64 bit already installed so i'm trying dual booting i have followed the below steps1- on windows, shrink the c partition and create a new unused volume for suse2- install the suse 11.2 on the new unused volume with hdd config like sda4 swap 4 gb sda5 20 gb / ext4 sda6 120 gb ext43- selected custom packages and started the installaton4- installation started smoothly and after installing packages it tried to reboot the machine at the end. But after this point the reboot operation has failed and gave a blank screen.
At the end the installation failed.I started the machine vaio boot logo comes and stops. i can't even enterbios setup or change boot options.I have unplaged the hd reset the partions, pluged it again and recovered win7So i think the installation damaged the file system.i have tried the above steps 2 times and came up with the same result.I have installed fedora 13 before with no problem.
I've just installed 11.2 Gnome 64 bit and after applying the updates and when it gets to finding server it says all are too slow and I get this Error 5:Connection too slow... no server available, aborting. I hit ok and it disappears.

Anyway, 11.04 has hit and since I'm dealing with office machines and software developers who expect a stable environment, I want to hold back 10.10 as long as possible (or at least "as long as I need to test things"), both on desktop and server installs. I'm looking at 130+ other updates in Update Managar today and when I hit the install updates button I had to fumble for the cancel button because it went to the dist-upgrade screen. How can I tell what packages will trigger the Ubuntu upgrade so I can freeze them?

Manually updating from yaST gives the same error. However, I cannot find the above packge available for installation. i found the following link in the "Yast2-ncurses broken?" thread, but it doesnt automatically install, and I am unsure whether it will work with ver 11.2:

After doing a #yum update and updating 451 updates, after rebooting its gets to the white bar going to Fedora 15 at the bottom of the screen and just stops. No error messages or nothing.
What command could possibly bring Fedora back?
Like others here it seems I had problems with the latest -current. I can't startx, no sound, etc. I put back the video drivers and such from the 13 CD but now have a bunch of other issues, video will flash every now and then and sometimes go blank so I can only reboot as exiting xwindows and going back in its still blank. I tried booting from the 13 cd and reinstalling without formatting my root partition but that dies in the kde games for some reason and setup won't start again. I was trying to not format and loose all the updates just put back 13 but that doesn't seem to be working.

when using opensuse 11.2 i get a popbox saying there are security updates ready to install. if i right-click on each update, there is a "ignore this update" button but i cannot click on it because it is greyed out.
why can't i click on 'ignore this update'?

now 11.3 is out, how do i upgrade from 11.2 (i presume theres an upgrade path via repo's than dvd/cd install)? i've tried 'Software Update', but comes out with no found updates.
After installing a pair of updates and restarting my Login window is gone. CTRL + ALT + F1 brings up the terminal and I can login there, but CTRL + ALT + F7 only shows the default green background with the cursor. No login window.

Is this as simple as using wget to mirror certain directories on the public repository?
The repository [URL] is not currently (or no longer) valid. The path still exists up to the "Contrib" level, however, there are no files or subdirectories under it. There are also two siblings at the "Contrib" directory level ("Live" and "Update:") and there are no files under them either other than a single subdirectory called "Test" under "Update:". Does anyone know if the updates that used to be available in this repository have moved and, if so, where to? If the repository is no longer required and there is no replacement, I'll simply remove it. I have also noticed issues for several months where the updater applet will go into an "updating" state and never return from it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI updated this afternoon and once my updates were done i went to connect a usb to my vmware xp box. I got a usb error that windows could not use the usb. So i rebooted vmware and got the same thing... I then shut down vmware and rebooted my machine.. once i logged into the machine and launched vmware i no longer can see any of my usb devices.
I would like to just rollback the updates so that i can use my vmware again.. as i must transfer cad files to the pc with usb. Autodesk only works in windows so vmware has been a blessing as i dont have to reboot every time i need to work on drawings!

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
I just today installed OpenSUSE 11.0 on an empty drive I had (320GB) and I had Ubuntu 10.04 on another 500 GB drive, and I have now lost my GRUB menu.

I'm a long time Linux user but new to Suse. I got a couple of questions I was hoping someone might shed some light to. I'm running OpenSuse 11.3. -After running 'zypper update' I see it's listing a couple of new packages it wants to install (flash-player among them). I thought update would mean update existing packages, not install random new packages. Is there a way to restrict zypper to install only updates and no new packages?
-I'm trying to find a repository that has the complete courier mail server (smtp, webmail and all the rest, not just the imap server) but I'm having no luck. Anyone know where I could get it? I know I can build it myself. -Is there a way to automatically download all available updates so that they can later be installed interactively?
I installed openSUSE on my macbook pro 7,1. As of now I am trying to update the software, unfortunately, I have encountered a problem. As I hit the "Install Updates" icon, I get a window that gives me a readout of the current updates. No problem there. However, after I click the "Update" button, a second window pops up that gives a very long list of other software that needs to be either removed, installed, or updated for the original updates to be installed. Only problem is the list is so long, it extends beyond the visible desktop. This is a problem because I cannot click on the button to install those updates. The window cannot be re-sized, so there is no way I can reach the button, and I have even tried rotating the desktop 90 degrees (to make it longer), but still to no avail, as the install button is out of reach even then. I don't know how I can update the software if I can't hit the right button. Is there perhaps another way to get around this (like with terminal)?
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday, shortly after booting my OpenSUSE 11.3 I got this popup. [URL]. I guess it was caused by the Updater Applet when checking the repos for new updates. But what does it mean? Why do I get this now and not when adding the repo. It seems to belong to the filesystems repo and I have indeed added that some time ago (in order to install davfs2). I'm not sure what it means to accept a signature.
Normally with public key infrastructure, you need to accept other's public keys or certificates containing their public keys. And before doing so you need to verify the fingerprint, otherwise the whole procedure is useless, because it might be a fake certificate / man in the middle talking to you. Once you have accepted (trusted) the public key (or a certificate containing it), the system will check signatures for you.
So the question "do you want accept this signature" sounds weird to me. In openSUSE repos I have come across fingerprints many times before. But whenever I have searched google in order to verify the fingerprint I have not received any useful hit. I would have expected that valid keys and their fingerprints are listed on some web site. It appears there are three instances of package signing keys ... but there has not been any answer.
