Ubuntu :: Zip File Not Unzipping On Windows?
Feb 27, 2011
I made an 8GB password protected Zip file on Ubuntu 10.10, sent it to a friend who's using Windows 7, and now she can't unzip it. The file transfer speeds between us are very slow, so I don't want to resend it. Every application she's tried (WinRAR, WinZip, and 7Zip) fails and gives some sort of "invalid archive format" error.
I had her do an MD5 checksum on the file and it matches mine. So, the likelihood of it being damaged during transmission is very small. I also successfully unzipped it on my end and used TeamViewer to try and get it unzipped on her end, just to make sure she wasn't doing anything wrong, she wasn't.
What could be the problem be UbuntuForums? Is there a difference in the way Windows and Linux handles zip files that is causing this problem?

I want to extract a huge .tar.gz file but when I do extract it stalls the server. The server is write heavy and extracting seems to choke the disk. Is there a nice way to extract without stopping the world? I've tried the 'nice' and 'cpulimit' command but they don't seem to do the trick.

Proper unzip command that will:
1) extract the file from the zip.

my partitioning layout was as follows
Vista Recovery
Windows 7
GRUB
Extended
-->Fedora 12 (ext4)
so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.

I keep trying and keep trying to set up my father's documents folder on our PC running Ubuntu 11.04 as a shared folder across the network with Windows computers, and I keep getting error messages like this one:
"'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /home/frank as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own. Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false" to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this."
I currently have his home folder set up so anyone on our PC running Ubuntu can access and change the files, at the moment. I also want to know if I can set up this file sharing with Windows, but still have all his files protected with a password?

For an assignment in school we were supposed to access the configuration file for X - Window, in particular change the screen resolution. According to my Comp TIA Linux + book we are supposed to use: gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf . All it does is open a blank document named xorg.conf, I checked the spelling, I used my graphical interface to route to /etc then I opened X11, but there is no xorg .conf. by the way I have installed a recent updates as well.

So I have tried google but it has been a big old fail on my end to find some info I need. I have been using Linux for a while now at home, and am currently running both Ubuntu Server and Desktop at home. Now because I like Linux so much I am trying to bring it into my work place.
What I am trying to accomplish, but do not know where to look is to have my Linux File server accessible through a VPN that is currently running on a Windows Server 2003. I have Samba up and running to share, and Likewise-open for AD.

Ive been trying for a week now to connect my ubuntu laptop to my windows xp desktop so that I can copy my pics on the desktop over to the laptop. Im using a crossover cable and ubuntu 10.04
I have tried too many things to bother explaining... including reinstalling ubuntu.
I have managed to get ubuntu to ping to xp. I had to set the ip address and netmask (?) manually.
From here i cannot get to my shared file on the windows computer.
Ive tried using nautilus and clicking on network.... I get an icon called "Windows Network" but cant browse further. Ive also tried clicking "file", "connect to netowrk" and typing in the ip address with/out share name. Ive tried using the desktop's computer name etc. Ive enabled the Guest account on windows. I have run sudo apt-get install smbfs and installed samba from the software centre. There are lots of "sambas" in the software centre... i installed the one simply called "samba"
Explain to me what I have to do to move my pics from xp to ubuntu.

I use VirtualBox at work, where windows7 is host and ubuntu 10.04 is guest operating system.
I want to access my windows drives, folders in ubuntu, when i did sudo blkid or mount or fdisk -l, i cannot see all the drives on my machine.
So i finally did with shared folders concept. Now i can't mount them wherever i want, but when i say automount in the virtualbox settings->sharedfolder, then it auto mounts in /media/E-drive??
But to see, copy, edit or access those media files, i need to be sudo?? With normal user i can't use those /media files.
Suggest a good method of sharing files from windows7 to ubuntu in virtualbox

Does Ubuntu have the equivalent of a Windows .exe self-installable file? If so, what is it called? I seem to remember installing LimeWire on Ubuntu a while back and the file I downloaded was self-installable. Is there a place where Ubuntu programs are available for download as packages that install themselves? Why are most programs for Linux not self-installable, like .exe installers in Windows? Is there a security advantage to most programs not being available for download a single automatic install file? It would be much easier for me to go to a program's website, download a single file that installs by itself, and be done with it.
Also, why is it that, unless you install a program in Ubuntu using synaptic package manager, the program cannot be uninstalled under GUI? I really love Ubuntu, but find that even having simple control over installing and uninstalling programs is a real pain. I would love to go to LibreOffice's website, download a single file for Ubuntu that would install the entire program, install it, and be done with it.
