Ubuntu :: Gnome-screensaver Freezes When Click Unlock?
Mar 3, 2011
I am on Ubuntu 10.04, and I think I have had this problem since I installed it.
When I type my password into gnome-screensaver and click "Unlock," all the buttons become disabled and the cursor turns into the "busy" look. I have to go into one of the virtual terminals and do "killall gnome-screensaver." This happens maybe 75% of the time when the screen locks.
Also, this last week or two there is a new problem where the gnome-screensaver covers only part of the screen and I can still see and use most of the desktop.

I have an Xubuntu 10.10 File server / Media centre which I have set up to automatically lock the screen at 1am so the teenagers dont stay up all night watching movie and then being tired for school. My problem is I dont know how to automatically unlock it or how to unlock it through SSH.Usually I just manually unlock it every morning as I walk out the door but sometimes I forget and then can't unlock it from home.Kids come home from school while I'm at work and then cant watch movies or shows. How do I get it to automatically unlock the screensaver / screen lock? How do I unlock it through SSH without using VNC?BTW I cant get VNC working anymore since I upgraded to 10.10 with a fresh install either.

Back when I used openSUSE 10.3 with KDE 3.5.x I used the KDE-specific version of blueproximity found here: K-Blueproximity KDE-Apps.org. The thing that made it great was that it integrated kscreensaver.
It hasn't been updated in a couple years and isn't compatible with 4.3.x so I'm using the non-KDE-ified standard blueproximity package. For the most part it works. Based on comments I found somewhere I'm running the following command to lock the screen:
Code:
qdbus org.kde.screensaver /ScreenSaver Lock ; xset dpms force off
and to unlock:
Code:
xset dpms force on ; killall -9 krunner_lock kblankscrn.kss
.
The problem is that the unlock command doesn't work. My monitors will reactivate and the screensaver will display but in order to actually unlock I have to hit a key/move the mouse and enter my password.
what the command should be to actually unlock the screen since the above doesn't work.

There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..

I have Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit. Kernel: 2.6.38-8-generic AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250u Processor 750GB HD 8GB RAM. Now, the problem is that when I lock my computer(I have to do this because I have brothers and stuff always trying to sneak on), it freezes after a while. Like, I lock my computer before I go to sleep, and I wake up and it's frozen, and I have to reboot to fix it. The problem is that I host 2 servers on it, and I can't turn it off.

I'm using: ubuntu 10.04 64 bit proprietary fglrx drivers for ati 4890.
When shaking the mouse to bring up the computer, the screensaver will freeze and not display the dialog box to log back into my profile. However, even though I can't see it, if I blindly and correctly type in my password it will work.
[update] I posted this question while at work where I do not use Ubuntu...sadly. Anyway, when I got home, I locked the screen, the gl fish screensaver came up. bam, no login dialog box. ok, tried the gl matrix screensaver, bam, no dialog box. Finally, I tried a non-gl screensaver, and what do you know, there's my login dialog box. Something is up with the gl screensavers.
Just to reiterate, when I activate the mouse or keyboard during a gl screensaver I do not see the login dialog box.

when I leave the computer and xscreensaver - which I have a link to in my .kde/Autostart directory - starts up, all hell breaks loose. I don't know if my desktop compositing is doing this (I have an ATI Radeon x1200 card with stable Mesa GL, seems to run compiz just fine) or if one of the individual screensavers is b0rked but it always seems to end with me coming back to a still-life shot of my computer screen with a BRIGHT BLUE translucent stripe across the top. Alt-SysRq-K doesn't do anything from that point on, Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't do anything and I have to hit the power button. I don't have multiple screensaver programs running at once, I've already disabled the native KDE saver. I never had this problem with GNOME, but couldn't enable compositing on it either.
FYI for anyone that feels the need to ask, I use the "radeon" driver and my glxinfo is thus:
Quote:
bash-4.1$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
code....

I've done the process with no problem on Ubuntu, but I can't get it working with Lubuntu.
I installed the pam package. I then added the @include common-pamkeyring line to my /etc/pam.d/lxdm file.
Here's my complete /etc/pam.d/lxdm file:
Code:
Am I doing something wrong? Does something have to be done differently in LXDE?

I wanted to get a screensaver as my background so I installed xscreensaver didn't work out to the way I wanted to so I removed it apt-get remove xscreensaver then it asked for some other packages to be removed so I did apt-get autoremove xscreensaver was still there working instead of gnome-screensaver so I did a command search to find folders of xscreensaver and remove them whereis xscreensaver and it did remove them, but gnome-screensaver still doesn't start up.
I've tried this command gnome-Message: screensaver-command --activate but I get this error: Message: Screensaver is not running!
I've tried googling for a way to start gnome-screensaver in terminal but no joy, anyone know how to get this to start.

The Gnome Screensaver preferences window is freezing my desktop. I went into synaptic and tried to remove it (to use xscreensaver instead). But synaptic, in removing gnome-screensaver package, wanted to ADD a bunch of packages, lots of KDE stuff (which I don't want). Is there any way around this? If not, is there a way to reset the gnome-screensaver config file (whatever it is) so that it doesn't freeze on startup? This problem arose after I selected a particular screensaver in the gui window.

when i called up the login screen to change to automatic login, i apparently changed my preference from GNOME to Failsafe GNOME (knew i made an extra click but didn't know where, dumb, i know). with Failsafe the network manager applet and all the other default prefs disappeared. the worst is that i can't connect to wireless without the nm.
these are preferences, right? you should be able to go right back anytime and change them but now when i go settings > admin > login the window is locked. only the unlock button is lit up and that won't budge. so as the thread title says, how do i unlock login preference window and/or disable Failsafe Gnome?

This has been going on for a few days now... when doing anything involving an opened right-click menu in Thunar, there seems to be a chance that the entire desktop will "freeze". I can move the mouse cursor, but cannot interact with any windows. If I use ALT+CTR+F* to switch to a terminal session and switch back to the graphical session, all the windows on the desktop appear blank. The computer appears to be running normally, I just can't interact with the GUI.So far, I've just been shutting down and rebooting when this happens... any ideas on how to go about diagnosing the problem and/or regaining control of the graphical session? I am using compositing and making non-focused windows translucent, but no other actions cause the GUI session to freeze so I don't think it's just a graphical issue.

Seeing this on two systems that went through F13-F14 upgrade.
version: gnome-applets-2.32.0-1.fc14.x86_64
symptom: via right click on a gnome panel, perform "add to panel" and choose Dwell Click.
Gnome panel bites the dust with SIGSEGV at this point, restarts, and then you've got dwell click on the panel.
Anyone else seeing this, and better yet, have a solution?

Although xscreensaver is much better and liked by many users, the Ubuntu devs replaced it with gnome-screensaver simply cause -
1) It's integrates better with the gnome-desktop.
2) It follows release cycles of Gnome.
Since the devs and admins won't listen, we users have to clean their **** up and this is the howto - In Ubuntu, the gnome-screensaver is running; but xscreensaver is better, so we need to replace it. The gnome-screensaver runs as a daemon...removing this gnome-screensaver package will remove this executable also -

I noticed that when typing in your password after locking the screen or a screensaver, the program focussed behind it is able to catch the input...
This sounds like a huge security risk to me, is there anyone who can test this? (Only noticed with game in wine, perhaps you need low level xorg access)

I have an Ubuntu 10.10 box authenticating Users against an LDAP server. User authentication works fine - ssh, console or Gnome.
The only place it has an issue is when the gnome-screensaver is activated and locks the computer. When I try to enter the correct password at this point I get these error in the logs;

Specifications:
Dell PoweEdge 1600SC
ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro 256MB PCI graphics adaptor
Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala"
Linux 2.6.31-22-generic #69-Ubuntu SMP Wed Nov 24 08:51:08 UTC 2010 i686
ATI fglrx drivers
Set up for dual-head display using two Princeton 19" monitors
Using the Gnome desktop and screensaver
At some point, I suspect since the last kernel upgrade, I've begun experiencing a problem when the screen locks: I tap a key on the keyboard and the monitors wake up, but I get no "unlock" dialog. I can usually Ctrl-Alt-F1, login and gracefully reboot the system, but sometimes I have to hit hard reset. For now I've disabled the screensaver in "System -> Preferences -> screensaver" (I assume that'll stop the problem), but that's not an optimal solution.

sometimes (not often, like once a week) in my F13, X freezes: the pointer still moves but I can't click and I can't switch to VT. The only thing I can do is power down holding the power key! The system is not frozen (Once I've ssh into it), so I think I can avoid this drastic shutdown. I remember the option "DontZap" was used in Xorg.conf to permit the use of the CTRL+ALT+DEL to kill X, now is missing. Can I restore it, somehow? Otherwise can I have a way out from X? In my opinion the use of the power button is unacceptable

Everytime I unlock my screen in KDE from the screensaver the background for the Gnome interface momentarily appears before the KDE plasma workspace returns. It only appears for a second and, sure, I can live with it but I wondered if there is a way to fix it and why it is happening in the first place? I initially installed ubuntu 10.4 then installed kubuntu through the package manager and have since upgraded to 10.10 and now 11.4. I think this problem has been here since install of kubuntu

I'm running Fedora 12 and the last couple days I have noticed my screensaver will not start anymore. I did a yum update a few days ago don't know if there is a connection between the two. I've just started to Google the topic. Found different culprits ranging from dbus problems to buggy code.
I'm using a x86_64 PC running kernel 2.6.32.23-170.fc12.x86_64. My Gnome version is 2.28.2. The Gnome-screensaver version is 2.28.3-1.fc12.x86_64.

Is there a way to add widgets to a Gnome screensaver? I think this can be done with KDE 4, but I've never liked KDE very much. I'm a programmer and comfortable with writing code if needed.
I'd like to be able to:
See the weather and forecast
Control Rhythmbox
Use a flash card widget for reviewing musical concepts
The reason I want these on the screensaver is that I have login restrictions. I would like to be able to do a very limited subset of activities without having to log in.

I have created a PyGTK app (a binary clock) that I would like to turn into a screensaver. I added the .desktop file to /usr/share/applications/screensavers/ but all I get when I select it is a black screen. On the GnomeScreensaver FAQ (here) it says to use a gsthemewindow as the toplevel window, but the libraries given are in C. Is there any way to:Import this C library to get access to this toplevel window, Convert this GTK+ C library to PyGTK, or use a pygtk app as a screensaver in some other way?

I just upgraded from F11 to F12. Everything seems to be nice except mouse. The mouse buttons (both left and right, except middle one) are accidently frozen for some times. It could happen when opening a new tab in Firefox, launching a program, opening a new windows. I cannot click anywhere but can use mouse wheel. I have to log off/ log in and it becomes normal. It does not happen so frequently (around 3-4 hours) but it is really annoying.
