Hardware :: Fedora Will Only Mount My USB Drive As Read-only
Feb 16, 2010
I just bought a 32GB USB drive, and it was working fine. All when i tried to use it later, it would only mount as read-only.You'd tell me to check the switch which some USB drives have, well this one doesn't have one.Does this sound like anything to anyone?

I have a problem in my ubuntu 10.01 that it can't load a drive/volume in ubuntu. When I tried, it said: "Unable to mount location Error mounting: mount: /dev/sda1: can't read superblock". And when I boot my pc with 'Windows', it said : "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" under a blue screen. What can I do to solve this problem?

I try
mount -t ntfs -o rw /dev/sdb1 /mnt/exthdd
it doesn't give me any response so I presume it succeeded but when I try to touch it, it tells me it's a read-only file system

I have installed a cable that connects from the CPU's SATA motherboard connection to a removable drives' ESATA connection.I would like to be able to swap drives on the ESATA connection and have all users be able to read and write to these drives.I have created the directory /archive/ where I would like the drive(s) to mount. The drives are all formatted Fat 32 - but in the future I may use HFS for formatting. When I used the command (as root):mount /dev/sdc1 /archivethe drive was mounted (but read only)What can I use in my /etc/fstab file that will allow drives to be mounted and unmounted by all users on the system? (both reading and writing)Also, will I be able to mount and unmount these drives without shutting down? or will I need to reboot every time I want to change drives?

Its annoying to unmount my flash drive twice.. its not a major problem actually but its kinda annoying , its whenever i plug-in my flash drive.. everything works well except when i need to un-mount it.. I usually unmount it twice using right-click of the mouse, then it mounts itself back, so i have to unmount it again.. Is there any way to control this? How do i setup the auto-mount option for USB flash drives?

I have a strange problem with my DVD player. The problem: My device seems not to read any CD (it does read DVDs). Prologue: On a previous installation I had the same problem. But after messing up with that system I made a re-install, and the problem was gone. So I wasn't concerned about the problem any longer. That would be fine, but recently I had to make a new re-install to have space for windows. (I know, I'm a sinful man) But now the problem is there again. And it even is there under windows.
Question: In how far is the hardware damaged or is it a software problem since it once worked? Hardware data:
-Systems: Fedora 12 & Vista
-Laptop: Dell Studio 1555
-Drive: Optiarc Model: DVD+-RW AD-7640S Rev: HD18
What I have been doing to fix the problem:
-I made an update of the firmware and bios with the files provided by dell
-cleaned the lenses (with a clean disc)
-checked log files (both windows and linux)
After setting udev to debug logging I received this

I got NFS installed all fine and dandy.
I want to make it now so that my drive will mount either at startup or a Keyboard shortcut.
Problem I run into is I need to logged in as root or have sudo access.
I got a feeling that it won't be that hard, maybe.
Pretty much I wanna run
sudo mount 192.168.1.102:/media/Xternal
Without putting in a password.

This is not a particular Fedora issue, but I take the chance
How can I mount a network (nfs) drive (on a RHEL4 machine) from my FC11, but as another user.
E.g. I would like to mount the folder /home/userA on the network drive. But my local username is userB. Hence I don't seem to have access to mount the drive.
sudo mount -t nfs eda4:/home/userA /mnt/eda4 gives the message: "mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting (null)"
I have put a broadcast address in /etc/exports and started an nfs daemon on the remote server.

I'm new to Fedora. Is there an instruction manual. I'm using Fedora 14. I found under documentation a manual for musicians and amateur radio enthusiasts, but not for regular users. I'm using a black widow, which is a holder for hard drives that connects thru USB. I'm trying to mount it. The file system is Ext4.

I have just installed Oracle Enterprise Linux. (which i believe is build on redhat). This copy of linux is installed on one hard drive, in the system there is another hard drive and also an SSD.
How can I mount the SSD and other hard drive so that I can read and write to them?
Unlike Windows, they dont simply appear under 'my computer'

Whenever I insert a USB drive (or plug in my Motorola Droid to copy files to it), a window pops up that says 'Unable to Mount File System'. Not Authorized. The drive shows up under the Places menu, but if I click on it I just keep getting the same error.

My Fedora does not auto detect a flash drive if I get to attach it with the OS already running. I still have to make a reboot and attached the drive right from the start in order for it to be detected/mounted.
Unlike In Mint 7, Ubuntu and XP, it automatically detects the flash drive as soon as it is attached.
make my Fedora detect the flash drive so that I would not have to reboot everytime I would use it.
FWIW here are some outputs:
Code: # /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Thu Feb 4 06:06:47 2010
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'

I remember seeing it a LOT on Windows Vista *Formerly the primary before it was mine* and later on Ubuntu, it was just there, I wasn't able to install Ubuntu to it nor install Fedora to it, it was just there. The laptop was originally supposed to have up to 160GBs but instead all I get is a 60GB HDD and another 60GB HDD that I couldn't do much but put media on it... In which I plan on doing now, but on Fedora it isn't automatically mounted so... What do I do to mount the HDD? I've found a guide about it but it was outdated, I think around 2004,and I don't want to trust it unless I know it's safe. Any way, what do I have to do? Also, I've a question I've asked myself over and over, 60 and 60 don't add up to 160, where's the other 40GBs?

I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

I recently installed Fedora 12 + KDE on my laptop. I also have a media PC which I have connected to my TV. It has an external HD connected to which I am trying to mount on my laptop. It is connected to two other PCs all running Windows 7, part of a workgroup that only requires a password with no user log in. These PCs are working OK but I cant mount the shared drive on my Fedora laptop. I have tried the "Add Network Place" wizard which didnt work. Tried using the host IP rather than the host name. This got me to a user authentication screen which prompted me for a username and password.
As I mentioned before, the only user authentication required to connect to it should be that the device should be within the same workgroup and use the password. Tried using the workgroup name as the username which didnt work, neither did using the PCs usual log in. Eventually I gave up on the wizard and attempted to mount it from the command line using the following command.
