Ubuntu :: Which Command Runs When Change Something In A GUI Menu
May 13, 2011
I explain in with an example:
Imagine you want to know which command is carried out when, after executing gnome-mouse-properties, you go to the Touchpad tab and click on "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad".
Another example:
Imagine you want to know the command that is executed when, after running gnome-appearance-properties, you go to the "Visual Effects" tab and click on None.
I've had a look via gnome-system-log in all the log files of the left with no success. Perhaps the commands that run when one changes things in the GUI menus are logged in some other file. Or perhaps they are not stored in any log. In this case there is probably some terminal command to know it, or some program for this.
I think that know that no xorg.conf is used by default this is something to have into account.

I have a script that is basically a series of rsync commands called bkup_all.sh. This script is located in the /root/ dir. From the command line (su'd as root), I can run the script like this:/root/bkup_all.sh > /var/log/bkup/bkup_$(date +%Y%m%d).logThis excecutes perfectly, and all the rsync adn script output is saved in a log file in the intended destination. However, I want this command to run automatically, so again, su'd as root I enter:crontab -ethen enter the following:00 02 * * * /root/bkup_all.sh > /var/log/bkup/bkup_$(date +%Y%m%d).logI want the script to run each night at 2:00am.But, the script does not run. There is no log file generated and I do not see anything in the syslog or system messages to indicate an error.

I am trying to execute an awk script which is called by a shell script. The result is that it always responds with << ^ invalid char ' ' in expression >>
As I do not have command line access, I use a php script as go-around.
On the command line,
Code:
awk --version
gives the following output:
Code:
Command: awk --version

I run XBMC media center software which is built on a minimal Ubuntu install. I was running a version built on Karmic and I had the following line in my /etc/init.d/rc.local and it always ran without a hitch:
Code:
mount -t cifs -o file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 //192.168.1.20/disk7/xbmc_thumbs/Thumbnails /home/kevin/.xbmc/userdata/Thumbnails
Recently, I upgraded to a version built on Lucid and now that fails to create the mount on boot up. Here is the entire contents of the file:
Code:
#! /bin/sh
### BEGIN INIT INFO
# Provides: rc.local
# Required-Start: $remote_fs $syslog $all
[code]....

I'm brand new to Linux and Ubunto 10.04.On the menu bar at the top of my desktop I seem to have attracted some kind of bug!The Log Out Symbol repeats itself across almost the entire menu bar and I cannot remove it. If I remove other buttons from the menu the space is immediately replaced by more Log Out Buttons. When I hover on the icon I get the message 'Log out of this session to log in as a different user' and when I right-cllick to click on 'Remove from Panel' or 'Move' nothing happens. It is not possible to right-click on another part of the menu bar to change the Menu Properties.

My .jar file needs and uses some files in the same directory it's in (everything, including the jar was unzipped into said directory). It runs perfectly when I do java -jar file.jar in the command line, but there's trouble when I double-click the file when running from the file system manager. I've tried a custom command under properties ie java -jar, but the problem is that the .jar file doesn't seem to be able to use any of the files in the same directory. When running, the jar can't find any of the files that it needs.

I use a SLES-machine (should be similar to opensuse I guess) and ad AIX-machine and got the following error:
Every time a none-root user runs an "at"-command on the linux machine, there is an error written into the errorreport of the AIX-machine. the error is the following: <82>Jul 12 22:32:09 linux-hostname atd[10754]: PAM audit_log_user_message() failed: Operation not permitted
I already checked the files /etc/at.deny (exists with users listed like "alias, backup, bin, ..." but not the user that causes the error-message) and /etc/at.allow (which does not exist but is not necessary, as far as I could read from the internet).

I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 with KDE. I have a keyboard with two Windows keys. Now, in a perfect world I would map the left Windows key to the K-Menu and the right one to that run-panel (or whatever it's called).I switched to Linux a few weeks ago, mainly because it seems like a lot of at least near-perfect things are possible on it. So far I've managed to remap my Windows keys to F13 (left) and F14 (right). But how do I bind them to the K-Menu and that little run-panel (the one you open with <Alt>F2) respectively?

I'd just like to ask you and see if there was a way to change the name of the menu. I'd like to change the word "Applications" to "Apps" since it'd take less space and I would have room for more windows since I've them all in the top panel.
If it's possible to change it from Applications to Apps. I tried using the Main Menu software but it only seem to work with the sub menus/applications.

I did the upgrade to 10.04 and now all my menus are in Japanese (wifes logon is in japanese but mine was english before). Was language support broken in 10.04? As far as I can tell my language is still set to English, even at the login screen. But everything is still Japanese.

I use the Elementary GTK theme, and I'd like to replace the "E" at the upper-left hand with my custom Ubuntu logo. However, when I extract the icon to the proper directory, and replace all files, nothing happens. I delete the cache, kill and restore the panel via Terminal, and rebuild the cache, to no avail.

I know this has been posted before, but non of the former posts helped me. What I would like to figure out is how to change the small Ubuntu logo next to the Applications, Places, System widget on the panel. I'm not sure if this is part of a theme or if it's a system file. Either way; I would love some help on this, as this will bring me one step closer to: world domination / creating a theme, how different are they really?

I'm slightly puzzled trying to change the icon on my single "gnome main menu" button. I've added it to a panel and gone to gconf-editor aps>panel and there is no objects folder on my home pc (which is a installed version of 9.10). In work I do the same steps on an install of 8.04 and it works fine. The only difference I can think of is on 8.04. I add the menu to the bottom panel that ubuntu has by default and at home its a panel I've added. I cant get a custom icon for my main menu in 9.10!

Is there any way to change the appearance of the menu that comes up when you right-click?I know about nautilus-actions, but that seems to only affect the options in the menu, not the look of the menu itself.'m not sure exactly what I would want to do, but the menu looks boring to me.Maybe adding a border, or changing the background from solid white would be nice.
