Ubuntu :: Way To Shorten Display-time Or Move Notification Dialog Box?

Feb 18, 2011

Notifications that popup in Ubuntu (e.g., for downloading items in firefox or Network configuration stuff) display a rectangular black box in the upper right corner of my Desktop. It often covers up items I need to access like logout items or links to my Account etc in a webpage I'm in. I often find myself having to wait for the Ubuntu dialog box to disappear before I can access whatever it is covering up.Is there a way to make these dialog boxes appear in the LOWER right corner instead? Also is there a way to shorten the amount of time that these notifications display before disappearing?

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Slow - Start Up Time Is 30 Minutes But It Usually Doesn't Start Up At All

May 4, 2011

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 11.04 64bit and the start up time is abnormally slow. If I start up the computer and don't press anything, the start up time is 30 minutes but it usually doesn't start up at all. It just boots into a purple screen, no splash, then it sits there and the computer doesn't have any loading lights flashing.

I had a similar problem with 10.10, but I assumed it would go away when I did a clean install of 11.04.

I can't get a read out of what's going wrong because when I press Esc it doesn't display anything, though weirdly it can sometimes get the start up process moving. I have also found that pressing enter really fast can sometimes help and something that seems completely oxymoronic, if I press the power button while it's starting up that can make it work, but nothing works every time.

Fedora :: Schedule A Process To Start At A Specific Time (not On Start Up)?

Jan 19, 2010

I'm trying to find how to schedule a process to start at a specific time (not on start up). How would I schedule a process/application to start at a specific time (if it matters, it will be a background process). For instance, have process abc start every weekday at 5am. I've done this for windows many times though have only been using linux regularly for a few months and haven't figured out the best way of doing this.

So far the best solution I have is to create a program that will start on boot and have it check the time and sleep until the required time and then start the required process(es) at the required time(s). But this seems more of a hack since I'd expect there to be a proper way of doing this.

General :: Possible To Shorten My Directory Commands In Ubuntu?

Jun 20, 2011

When working on a rails app I like to open all of my files through the command line like so
CD my_app
gedit app/views/user/show.HTML.erb
Is there a way that I could shorten this so that I could just write something like
gedit user_views/show.HTML.erb

I would like the console to stay in the main directory, I just don't like having to type out app/controller/user_controler.rb every time I want to open the user controller. I know that I could just open the file with my mouse, but I feel like moving from keyboard to mouse breaks my focus a little bit. When I can just tap away at the keyboard it seems like I have a more smooth workflow.

Ubuntu :: Taking A Long Time To Start Up Programs?

Jan 3, 2011

I don't know if it is just me but it seems like Ubuntu takes a long time to start up programs. For example, it takes me 10 seconds to start up "Ubuntu software center". My computer is a relatively fast one. It has 4 gb of ram and an intel core duo processor. I didn't install that many programs. Does anyone know what might be the source of the problem and how to fix it?

If I press "F" the screen says that the drive is no ready, that I can wait, cancel or manually recovery. If I wait, in about 1 minute, the system starts normally. If I press "M" to repair manually, then I press fsck to repair the disk and apparently repairs the disk. But everytime I start (power on) the computer, Ubuntu always checks the disk and gives a dialog where I can: press F to attempt to fix the errors, I to ignore, S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

Ubuntu :: Starting Processes At Boot Time - Don't Start Privoxy?

Apr 27, 2010

I installed and configured privoxy - everything worked nicely when I run it manually by

Quote:
/etc/init.d/privoxy start

After restarting the computer privoxy wasn't start automatically. I checked the links in /etc/rcX.d - are o.k. I installed sysv-rc-conf - shows that for runlevel 2 - 5 privoxy is running. I changed /etc/rc2.d/S20privoxy to /etc/rc2.d/S99privoxy - to start that process at the end. I installed Boot-Up Manager. Privoxy is marked for start automatically. I added in /etc/rc.local line: /etc/init.d/privoxy start

Privoxy still doesn't turn on at boot time and every time I must start it manually. Could you tell me how could I repair this ?

Ubuntu :: X Wont Start When A Monitor Isn't Plugged In At Boot Time?

Jun 18, 2010

I have a system I use as a file server running Ubuntu 10.04. I don't have a screen hooked up to this system. When this system reboots, if there is no screen, X wont start on it. This then prevents me from using VNC to get to the desktop. If a monitor is plugged in at the time it boots, then everything works, and I can then remove the monitor. But moving this monitor between computers and crawling under desks is not enjoyable. How can I fix this so X starts on boot even when no monitor is plugged in?The error I get in /var/log/Xorg.log* looks like this:

grep -EnC2 "EE|WW|fatal|error" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Debian :: Start Bootchartd Non-interactively Each Time?

Apr 19, 2011

want to use bootchart to see how much time its taking for things to load up and the desktop to settle. I am having a little trouble figuring out how to make sure that bootchard loads up each time (non-interactively) so I can easily put up the results and see what could be done better. The man page of bootchartd says :-"bootchartd is commonly used to profile the boot process for the purpose of speeding it up. In this case, it is started by the kernel as the init process. This is configured by adding the init=/sbin/bootchartd option to the kernel command line -- either interactively or by editing the bootloader's configuration file. Please refer to the documentation of your bootloader for details (e.g. lilo, grub or yaboot)."

Now if I try to start up I get to the first blue screeen but then it says something like "last mountpoint date was October 30th = now September 30th which is in the future" (not exact wording). Time zone is correct and not set to network time or UTC. I'm dual booting with WinXP and date and time is correct and Time Zone is correct. System time is correct. So now to get into F13 I have to manually set the system time to 30th October.Which is OK for the 1st reboot but reverts back to the correct date on the next reboot. WinXP boots ok.
