Ubuntu :: Small White Lines Over The Screen, Like Every 3 Line?

Aug 19, 2010

I have noticed that there are some tiny white scanlines over the screen in linux, is this something known? specific graphics cards? just an issue with my setup?

Its hard to explain but its even horizontal scanlines, like small white lines over the screen, like every 3 line... was wondering if its my geforce 8800 or what it is?

Ubuntu :: Sometimes When Resuming From Suspend - Screen Flickers With White Lines

May 29, 2011

I've been away from Kubuntu for a while but came back when Kubuntu 11.04 was released because it's awesome. I have a newer laptop since then, a Latitude E6410 with Intel graphics and 8GB of RAM. Everything works great, except......Sometimes when I resume from suspend to RAM, the screen flickers with thin white lines across the screen. I can switch to a tty and reboot it from there, but I'm unable to use KDE until I reboot. A lot of times resuming from suspend works without issue, but sometimes this problem occurs. I haven't figured out exactly what triggers it. In fact, the most recent time it happened, I didn't even have an application open.

I would like to figure this out because I use suspend a lot. I rarely turn off my laptop unless an update requires me to. I prefer to be able to close my lid and resume whatever I was working on later, but with this glitch I cannot trust it to do that.

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu 10.4: Locks And White Lines Spread Over Screen?

Jun 29, 2010

I have a very strange problem since I turned to kubuntu 10.4. Often, after some heavy working, my laptop works very slowly and suddenly when loading something, it locks and white lines turns all over the screen, just like curtains. Linux jumps out of KDE and logs in automatically. That's very anoying since all my work is lost and it turns back to the previously saved session.

Also, often when I boot, the load screen is also mmissed up with those white lines. The only thing I can do then is to reboot.

I tried to re-install kubuntu (in first instance, i upgraded in kpackage, then i re-installed with formatting the root en swap partitions).

I don't know how to solve it. Only thing that seems reasonable now is to downgrade, since i didn't have this problem on 9.10 (fyi: I have a dell inspiron 1501 with ATI Xpress 1150 256MB HyperMemory video card, formerly i had problems to have good graphic drivers for it on previeous versions of kubuntu (some 3d games didn't work), maybe this has someting to do with it?)

Ubuntu :: Graphics / GUI 10.04 - Skin Flickered Black / Green A Few Times Then White Vertical Lines Started Appearing Down From The Top Of The Screen

Aug 3, 2010

Ever since the problem with Flash started up a few days ago, (Videos Lagging/jumpy/jerky horridly.) I decided to finally switch from 9.10 to 10.04...all was going well until a few minutes ago while I was browsing themes and running Konversation, the skin flickered black/green a few times then white vertical lines started appearing down from the top of the screen to about the middle, (Almost looked like the teeth on a haircomb). I had to then shutdown and restart. What id like to know is are the two connected (My earlier flash problem and this) or how I can fix it, so far it hasn't happened again but I'm starting to worry, I've never had problems with Ubuntu until a few weeks ago.

Ubuntu :: No Boot After Update \ Goes To A Black Screen With A Solid White Line In The Top Left Corner?

Mar 3, 2011

Today brought some new updates. I did the updates and while not required I did a restart. Then it goes to a black screen with a solid white line in the top left corner (flashing). It does not boot. I held down the power button to shutdown. When I press the power button, I get the Dell splash screen, then it goes to a black screen with a solid white line in the top left corner (flashing). Nothing like this has happened before

Red Hat / Fedora :: Wit HFedora 12 - Screen Goes Black And A White Line In The Top Left Corner Flashing

Feb 16, 2010

I have re-installed Fedora 3 times, each time, after a little while of use, when I am botting it up, it loads up, and before the login screen appears, the screen just goes black, and I end up with just a black screen and a white line in the top left corner flashing, thus resulting in me not being able to log in. The exact same has happened a number of time

Could it be something I had installed? Also, whilst using it, on the third install, a few times a message appeared telling me there was a kernel error, could this be linked to the problem? I was running Fedora in GNOME, but I had KDE installed too.

Fedora Installation :: F10 On Homebuilt Server - Screen Goes Blank And Freeze - The Blue Line Changing To White

Jun 4, 2009

Ive recently built a music server with the following configuration:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200 processor
Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 Motherboard with 2GB ram
Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB SATA Hard Drive
Samsung 22X CD/DVD Burner IDE

I would like to be able to run Fedora 10 (and Vortexbox, an application to burn and store CDs) but have been unsuccessful in getting F10 to load. I am a novice Linux/Fedora user. I've been able to load and run Windows XP on the server with no problem. I have downloaded and verified both the x86_64 DVD and the x86_64 Live CD from the Fedora website. With the live CD, the last thing that appears before the screen goes blank and the install freezes is the blue line changing to white. I have tried several different SATA configurations , have turned off all non essential options in BIOS(ethernet, USB support), and have tried loading with fail safe bios settings.

OpenSUSE Install :: Partitioning External Drive - Screen Was Just Blank Black With The Flashing White Line

Jan 11, 2011

this is my first time doing a custom partition, I tried to do it with only the assistance of reading as I go, but I don't believe I found enough information last night. What I am trying to do, is put openSUSE on 200gb out of 500gb space on my external hard drive, as well as on 50gb space out of 110gb on my internal hard drive. The remaining 60gb space on my internal drive is going to be for microsoft windows. The remaining 300gb space on my external drive will be storage space. It seems like what I want to do is achievable

What I want is to have my main openSUSE on the external drive (primary partition I think?), with the GRUB loader so that when the external drive is not plugged in, my little brother can use windows on my internal hard drive. I tried this last night, and when installation had finished, I rebooted my computer and the screen was just blank black with the flashing white line as if waiting for me to type, although it would not allow me to type when I tried. It would be great if someone could tell me the order in which to partition, including the terms primary partition, extended partition, and logical partition, as needed.. I don't want to permanently muck up this machine.

Fedora :: Horizontal White Lines Appearing In Gnome 3?

May 29, 2011

I have weird graphical glitches in Gnome 3. They appeared in RC3 and now appear in the final release, but they didn't appear in beta. Here's what they look like, there are horizontal white lines appearing in different places where they shouldn't appear:

[URL[

it can be a result of this bug:[URL] but my glitches look different than the ones in there.

I have a Mobility Radeon HD 5650 video card. Should I just update my system regularly and hope it gets fixed, or is there some way to fix it by tweaking some settings or stuff? Maybe by installing the official ATI drivers? I'm not sure, but I've read somewhere that the official drivers don't work well with Gnome 3, is that true?

So far I've tried deleting all my .gnome config folders in my home directory, logging in/out etc. and nothing seems to work. Attached screenshots of the problems.

Fedora Installation :: Black And White Lines On Boot LiveCD Or HDD?

Jan 9, 2009

Downloaded the F10 live CD. Booted to it, got past the white, blue, and dark blue loading bar then my screen would be covered in black and white lines. No sign of the GUI except for a mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+backspace would cause the display to blink off and then come back on to the same thing. ctrl+alt+f2 would bring me to a terminal, logged in as root, but from there I couldn't do anything. startx would tell me I had x running on another screen.

hitting tab when booting the livecd and adding "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" to the boot line. That works. I get to the desktop at native res with desktop effects. Killer. I tried to install; install went flawless, rebooted to my HDD and the same issue, black and white bars. When booted to my HDD, however, ctrl+alt+f2 doesn't bring me to a terminal, it causes my monitor to go into sleep mode and my computer becomes unresponsive so I can't do anything from the command line.

Here's what I'm getting at : how do I get my installed version of F10 to do the "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" args that the livecd can do?

My machine is a home built machine I bought off of a friend. P4 2.4 ghz, GB RAM, 2 80GB HDDs, Radeon x1600.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: White Lines On Sony HDTV With NVidia Card Via HDMI

Apr 1, 2010

I've had a look and can't find this particular problem on the boards (feel free to correct me if there is something useful already though). I've recently got a Sony HDTV, and have hooked it up via HDMI to an Nvidia GeForce graphics card. Surprisingly enough, I'd like to watch movies/TV this way. However I'm experiencing flickery horizontal white lines on the desktop, and horizontal lines through video. I generally use VLC to play stuff, and have the 805 Nvidia proprietary driver installed.

So far I've tried:
Changing the resolution and refresh rate (Including the native TV ones)
Using Twinview, Separate X Screen and unplugging my monitor altogether.
Uninstalling the Nvidia Drivers and using the standard ones
Re-Installing the Nvidia Drivers
Xine Player
Changing video output of VLC to X11
Using Force scaling (I think, it's a tv-specific setting to compensate for differences in native resolution)
Switching desktop effects on and off

In short, it doesn't seem to be an issue with drivers, resolution, refresh rate, video files, codecs or players. How to stop these flickery lines as I wouldn't like to have to give up on the OS over one problem.

But the problem is, all these small Linux versions are LiveCD or have a compressed file system.

We need a SMALL linux distro, that we can install UNCOMPRESSED (no squashfs etc) on a hard disk.

This is so simple I'm sure I'm missing something..

Ubuntu :: GNOME Screen Is Too Small

Apr 13, 2011

I use Ubuntu 10.10 with both Gnome and KDE desktops. My default screen res is 1366x768, and there is no problem with KDE, Gnome indicates that my res is the same but everything on the screen looks too large. When I lunch an app like GIMP I can't see the inmenu icons, it's not a pain to die but sometimes makes work harder. At first I told it was the way Gnome looks (I have never before run linux on such a high res), but when I boot another distro like Debian everything is OK. Also my display mode is locked to laptop screen and can't be changed.I like my Gnome screen and don't want to move to KDE.
