Ubuntu Installation :: Make A Live-USB Containing Among Others Both Desktop I386 And Desktop AMD64
May 1, 2010I want to make a live-USB containing among others both Ubuntu desktop i386 and Ubuntu desktop AMD64. How do I go about this? I tried using unetbootin, first adding i386 and then amd64, but that failed. My computer with an athlon II did manage to boot, and showed it had booted into the 64-bit version (ram shown was 3.9 GB, i386 goes to about 2.7 I think), my wife's computer with a pentium 4 did not manage to boot, got to a black screen. I think this is because casper has issues, being overwritten (I'd seen something to that effect somewhere), and thus only the latest version added being booted (in this case amd 64).
I'm under the impression that the startup disc creator included won't help, nor won't the multicd.sh script, so how do I circumvent the issues?
Ubuntu :: Make Desktop Read Only - Can't Make Changes
May 25, 2010he clicks on everything on his GNOME desktop, and manages to delete everything, including menus, icons, etc. The people he lives with aren't skilled enough to fix it, and I live a good eight hours away. I have remote capabilities with NX, but that requires them to initiate a connection to my workstation here, which is more painful than I thought it would be. I need a way of locking down the desktop, so it's read-only, so he can't make the changes he seems to keep making. I figure I could make the .gnome directory read-only, but I don't know if that would affect the normal operation.

Jun 8, 2011Is there any way I can get my desktop to display the items on it in list view? I've spent a good part of a day doing google searches and reading thread after thread on this subject and I've tried all kinds of suggested ways of accomplishing it but as of yet I haven't had any success. I just switched to ubuntu from windows and I was able to do this in windows with a program that loaded at startup. Seeing as how linux is infinitely more customizable than windows I would assume this would be easy to do but I'm having no luck. Dec 21, 2010I have a bit of a problem and the only solution I can think of at the moment is a very tedious one, so I was hoping there would be a better way. What I am trying to do is cross compile the PPPD program so that I can install it on an embedded system (this system does not have make/gcc on it). It was easy to cross compile it, but I can not run "make install" since I'm compiling on a secondary machine. I don't want to install PPPD on this secondary machine (I couldn't anyway, because it was compiled for a different architecture) and I can't run make install on the target machine because there is no make/build system for it.
So it seems like what I would have to do is to manually copy over each compiled file from the build machine to the appropriate location of the target machine. And the only way (that I know of) to figure out how to do this is to manually examine the Makefiles (yes, there are several for PPPD) and figure out which file should go where on the target system. This isn't trivial because it uses a hierarchy of makefiles and the probability of human error for this method is high.
Is it possible that I could run another command that would give me a list of all the commands that make install would perform? Or a list of all files and their target location for "make install"? Or possibly some other solution that I am completely unaware of that would make this task not so painful and error prone?
Programming :: Make List Of Directories Which Contain Files Other Than Subdirs?
Oct 17, 2009I need to, through a bash script, go through a given directory (given as argument 1) to list out the relative path in this directory (including $1) for eact subdirectory which contains files. Directories which only contain . .. and eventually only subdirectories SHALL NOT be listed. It is this last requirement that makes it difficult for me.
I have been using the tree command for now, but I have not found a way to ignore paths to directories which only contains other subdirs or nothing at all in any easy way. I may offcourse test each directory after they are listed but this gives an extra loop to go through and I beleive it should be possible to do it directly when creatring the list. I guess by using find or ls in conjuntion with the tree command or by itself it should be possible but I am not to conversant of nested script commands.

Jul 3, 2011I was testing with "Compiz rotate cube" in my Ubuntu machine. Changed some settings by disabling "desktop cube". Something had changed in the mean time.
Now i could able to login. Only blank desktop wall paper i could able to see. No applications list, startup icons displaying.
If i press Ctrl + Alt + F = Folder view is displaying, i could able to view my files.
If i press Ctrl + Alt + F1 = Could able to go to Terminal window and able to do all sort of commands.
revert to my original settings so that i will getback my icons / applications list in my desktop.

Jan 4, 2011Is there a way to make a dialog with zenity which would show an updating list? Zenity does it with progress, but I didn't figure out if it's possible to do it with the list. I.e. for example, I want to monitor something, and update the dialog with new list periodically. Is it even possible? zenity can wait for data from stdin, but it just adds stuff to the list. May be there are some control sequences which clear the list in the dialog?
For example:
{ echo "Foo"; sleep 2; echo "Bar"; } | zenity --list --title='Dynamic list?' --text='Some data' --column='values'
How can I instead of adding Bar, replace the Foo with it?

The main problem is that there is no way to get a list of all the tags without reading each and every file. And also what if you have an unused tag? Have a file that contains tag "keys" and file list "values". This seems like it would be fast and effective, but what if one of the files gets renamed?

Feb 17, 2010I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it

Mar 13, 2010I recently switched from Ubuntu to Kubuntu (fresh install of the OS, not just installing KDE), and I'm more than a little lost. When I download files to the desktop, they don't appear on the Desktop. I can see that they're in /home/andrew/Desktop through Dolphin, but the icons just aren't there. I was able to successfully put an icon for Firefox, but the icons for these files just aren't showing up. I can't help but think it might just be due to a setting, but for the life of me I absolutely can't find it and I've been googling to no avail. how to make files visible on the desktop?
