Ubuntu :: Usb Devices Won't Work On Inspiron 4150?
Feb 11, 2010
who recently bought an old laptop on ebay (an inspiron 4150). It came with 9.10 installed and basically everything works. However we can't get any usb flash drives to work or a usb mouse either. This is her first experience with linux and I would like to get things working for her. I don't think the one usb port is dead as the output of dmesg gives among other things:
Code:
.
.
.
[ 0.306570] usbcore: registered new interface driver usbfs
[ 0.306609] usbcore: registered new interface driver hub
[Code]....
There is no change in the output of dmesg when I remove and reinsert a flash drive. The light on the usb flash drive is coming on however. I have tried a number of live cd's and have not been able to get anything out of this usb port.
If it is, does anyone have good things to say about using laptop pci usb cards? Her wireless pci card is working just fine.
I'm trying to get a Xerox 4150 printer added to Ubuntu 10.04 and having troubles. I downloaded a wad of printer PPD files and it has worked on all but this Xerox 4150 printer. When I provide it with Xerox's ppd file, I get the following error...
Failed to read PPD file. Possible reason follows: /somepath/xr_WorkCentre4150.ppd: FAIL **FAIL** Unable to open PPD file - Missing option keyword on line 30.
Has anybody had luck with either installing this ppd file or some workaround to get the Xerox 4150 installed?
i installed Ubuntu on my whole hard drive its the only OS i am running i can not get my internal wireless card to work i have tried to follow the post i have seen on here about the same computer but how to install/program my wireless card so i can get on the internet .
I am trying to use JACK for some audio applications, but I have had no success until now I'am using Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Inspiron 6400. Kernel 2.6.32-33.
The following is the QjackCtl log: p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; } 14:38:48.196 Steckfeld deaktiviert. 14:38:48.377 Statistik zurckgesetzt.
are there plans to make ubuntu work with different devices - tuners, printers, scanners, local net etc? nothing of mine isn't working - there are no drivers.
no for lexmark z35 no for scanner mustek bearpaw 1200 cu plus no for tv tuner aver media 507
no local net with sharedfolders (I don't no how install it - in windows xp local net appeared itself i have only connected my wi-fi router and gave names to the local net and pc) it is sad - I should use Windows to have everything work good Manual searching and installing such drivers are so terribly difficult ubuntu or other linux OS is good idea to have alternative OS but it's no chance to use it for most of people - it is too difficult no make it good
ok i have been in Ubuntu for almost a year now and i have a problem i am trying to get worked around or fixed I have searched thousands of times and thousands of sites for the answer it dosen't seem to be really known or talked about yet i have xbox controllers and when i plug them in while the computer is on lsusb reads them but i canto use them on any thing but if i reboot they are recognised by the programs this also goes for my ekey small usb midi keyboard is there a way to get thease devices to recognize while the computer is on couse i hate having to reboot just to play an emulator or somthing or to play with my midi keyboard in lmms
I use Kubuntu 9.10 on my desktop and UNR 9.10 on my netbook... both worked just fine before(with every version of Ubuntu since 8.04), but I didn't use them for a little while with 9.10 and nothing from either of them... Logitech USB headset and the IPV Free2 USB phone.... granted I couldn't use all the features with the Free2 phone before but I could still use it to talk with skype. When I go to sound devices in skype, they are both recognized by the system... but just will not work no matter what.
Host is x64 openSUSE 11.2 guest is winxp pro VirtualBox ver 3.0.12
The install and setup of VirtualBox is good and working.
I'm having a perplexing issue with usb devices. I have three usb devices connected to my system - apc battery, sd carder, and a Logitech joystick. All devices work on the host. I can connect the apc and the card reader to the guest and they work perfectly. But not the Logitech joystick. I get this error, same as I've seen in some other threads:
Failed to attach the USB device Logitech Force 3D Pro [0600] to the virtual machine winxp1. Failed to create a proxy device for the USB device. (Error: VERR_READ_ERROR)
under "details" is this:

i'm using opensuse 11.3... sometimes i listen to a music from videos.. but, when i switch to another console (ctrl+alt+f1-5), music stops.. why? what will happen with other applications (database, etc) that work in a background?
For those of you that prefer open-source solutions, the b43 code to drive BCM432X 802.11n devices has just come to life. It can now scan and associate. Tests for throughput will come soon. These revisions to the driver will be in kernel 2.6.38, thus not in openSUSE until the next release after 11.4.
I have a Dell inspiron 1420 and its set up as a dual boot. Windows/Fedora.I cant get the wireless card to work. I review some previous posts but still cant get it working.
I did a /sbin/lspci Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4310 USB Controller (rev 01)
I did $rpm -q b43-fwcutter b43-fwcutter-011-3.fc9.i386
I was using V9 and upgrade to V10 and now my logins in my inittab do not work. I realize that is file structure is outdated so I made individual run files for each of my serial devices under event.d ( such as TX0000 - rc....etc) - all this works but i need to manual type initctl start TX000o to get logon for my serial devices. I would so much like them to automatically start on bootup.
Trying to use banshee to import music into Creative zen mp3 players but a pop up says 'import to library is not implemented for MTP devices yet'. Anyone know how to fix this?
I just implemented dracut on my Slack. It works well, but for this also I had to rebuild the kernel. Everything works as it should beside KDM. When KDM start mouse/keyboard don't work. I check the logs and I don't actually see any errors.Note: Im using Slack in VirtualBox with fbdev or vesa driver and it doesn't work with neither of the drivers. I suppose its something missing in the kernel, but don't know what. Before rebuilding the kernel and implementing dracut, everything work with fbdev and/or vesa
i've installed openSUSE 11.2/KDE. Installation process finishes with fun. The first thing that i wanted in my laptop don't work. That's wireless internet. I've google and google. saw many thereds in openSUSE forms and check what i understand after reading thereds. Finally what i understand is i've to install firmware. I've downloaded the b43-fwcutter and broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar. Installed b43-fwcutter. and copy broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar. in to root. by using
I'm having trouble getting my wifi devices to work on my 128bit WEP network. I have a new Thinkpad T400, with an internal Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN. I also have some cardbus cards: a Lucent ORiNOCO Gold, a Linksys Wireless-G, and a TRENDnet TEW-421PC. I have them set up as interfaces eth2, eth1, and eth3. (The TRENDnet isn't recognised as a network card at all, so no interface for it.) I have installed the latest firmware for the Linksys card.
The /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-* files are virtually identical for all of them, differing only in the HWADDR and DEVICE lines. So here's the behaviour:
1. The Lucent card comes up just fine. 2. The internal 5100AGN and the Linksys cards won't come up, and watching with iwconfig shows that they're either associated with my AP OR they've got an encryption key set -- but not both. 3. When trying to bring up the 5100AGN, I get the following messages:
iwlagn: index 0 not used in uCode key table iwlagn: index 3 not used in uCode key table
/var/log/messages shows DHCPDISCOVER requests being sent, but they're bound to fail since the association with the AP with WEP isn't being completed. And yes, the ifcfg-* files really *are* identical except for the DEVICE and HWADDR lines. The /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file correctly maps the interfaces to the MAC addresses. So why does my antique ORiNOCO card work and thew newer ones fail? How can I track down what's being done wrong/not being done?
Recently I have started using my netbook (Acer Aspire one D250) alot more due to travelling and I noticed that the mic didn't work. Headed to the Ubuntu forums and saw a thread about installing ALSA. So I did and now I have no sound. From what I can tell ubuntu is no longer picking up my sound devices but I'm sure. Hence why I am here. I need to get my sound working again (obviously) and then in turn get my mic working for mumble and other VOIP programs.
I just installed skype 2.1 beta 2 (the deb file) from the skype website, but the only option I see under Sound Devices -> Recording is "PulseAudio Server (local)" This doesn't work for me, as the skype test calls don't actually record anything I say. I use skype a lot and FINALLY got it working under karmic, but I needed to upgrade to lucid and now it's broken.
When I open Sound preferences and look at the Applications section, Skype shows up as recording when I run its test call... but no sound is recorded? How is it possible that my sound card picks up something recording but doesn't actually record it when I'm in skype?
I'm working on a server and noticed that the to RAID5 setup is showing 4 Raid devices but only 3 Total devices. It's on a fully updated CentOS 5 system that only has three SATA drives, as it can not hold anymore. I've done some researching but am unable to remove the fourth device, which is listed as removed. The full output of `mdadm -D /dev/md2` can be see below. I've never run into this situation before.Anyone have any pointers on how I can reduced the Raid Devices from 4 to 3? I have tried
I have a 4-5 year old dell inspiron 600m that i have been running on linux ubuntu for the past 2-3 years. Last week i took it apart to paint the casing, got that done and since I put it back together it has a tendency to become very hot. When i got it back together i also installed a good number of updates. Also, I can no longer stream videos/ music from the internet. I am not sure if i messed something up when i was putting it back together, or if something in these updates has caused a problem. I have always been able to stream on previous installs, and i cannot honestly remember if i could before i took it apart. i am trying to watch a video on ..... and the cpu usage went clear to 100% and the cpu temperature went up to 99 Deg Celcius. The audio and video didnt even match but for a second or two at the very beginning. When the computer is sitting idle browsing the internet the cpu usage is very low, maybe avg. 15% and the temp drops to 55deg C fairly quickly.
I'm trying to make the changes listed in post #5 here to my Inspiron 8000: There's no xorg.conf in Xubuntu 10.04. But I figured out how to create one, and I edited it as suggested. But there's no menu.lst in Xubuntu 10.04 either. That is, the file called "menu.lst" is located in
/usr/share/doc/memtest86+/examples
and it has no "defoptions" line. So how can I make the poster's suggested changes (i.e., do something functionally equivalent, assuming that's possible) to my newer system?
I am not able to adjust the brightness in ubuntu. I am using gnome and ubuntu 10.04. I can see some folders DD01, DD02 in /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/ with value as given below. cat /proc/acpi/video/GFX0/DD01/brightness <not supported>
i want to install ubuntu in my dell..ive already installed one in my desktop can i use that installer to my dell mini inspiron 10?? i have a usb hard drive..or better to use usb stick? well what about blackbuntu? seems awesome can i install that in my dell?
i just installed version 11.04 on a dell inspiron 8100 the install went perfect up to the point where it asks me to restart. once i restarted i can not see the desktop.
dell inspiron 8100 20GB HDD, 512MB RAM, Pentium III.
I upgraded. Now I cannot use wireless. lshw -C network gives me this:
[Code]....
i cannot see anywhere that i have my old wlan0 connection configured. i have done this before, YEARS ago and my config survived many upgrades, but i have settled into a bit of a complacency and long since forgot how to amend this.
This computer has the ATI Radeon HD 4250 which wont run unity apparently. It runs in classic mode without effects, it also runs on unity 2D. How can I get it to default to Unity 2D so that my girlfriend doesn't have to select it each time?
relatively light Ubuntu user here. Installing Ubuntu on my mom's laptop. Installation went smoothly, but I don't have any internet. There seems to be no driver installed for the wireless, I tried to plug the computer into my modem, but it doesn't connect to the internet, won't even find the router. I copy paste some commands from the laptop.
