I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.
I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?
I am not sure what is up I tried to install the update 10.04 but it failed I thought a well never paid attention to the errors and rebooted now I still get grub and after a bunch of errors terminal prompt but won't boot

Well I finally joined the forum, because I finally have a big problem!
I had Ubuntu 10.10 installed inside of Win7, I updated it to 11.4 BETA (I know a bad Idea). Well I dint work, now ill I get is some sort of GRUB console.
I would like to either fix this or retrieve my very important files! I now have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my computer on a separate drive. But I have not been able to find my old Ubuntu files.
When I tried to install the last update. I got a failure error.
View 8 Replies View RelatedWhy do I receive messages that have the phrase "fail to fetch" when I try to update Ubuntu 11.04?
I am using System, Administration, Update Manager and I have not modified the file /etc/apt/sources.list; nevertheless, I have copied it below together with an example message code...
I created a LiveUSB and that worked. On about the 3rd use I attempted to update packages - about 174 came up I think (I saw that number on another post which reminded me, hence the precision). Two or three dialogues came up, unfortunately unintelligible to me, a Ubuntu novice. Both concerned grub2. The first I just forwarded on and the update trundled on. The 2nd asked me something like whether I wanted grub to update sda or sdb. I checked neither (against the pop-up help advice). The update completed but when I eventually went to reboot from the USB I got a repeating fatal message: something like "Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31-17-generic/.dep". I had to switch off. It did reboot successfully from a LiveCD.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed the Ubuntu Desktop 10.4 on my new MacBook Pro under a Parallels Desktop (VM).The install wend fine and after rebooting I was a happy new Ubuntu user.Had to reconfigure the ethernet port of my virtual machine and I had internet access. After 5 minutes, Ubuntu displayed a message that there were updates available, which I ran successfully. After the reboot however I got the following message :"An error occurred while mounting /media/psfPress S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery"After pressing M, a maintenance shell started under "root@ubuntu".As new user, I did not want to mess around as root (I would know what to enter). So I pressed ctrl-D which brought me back to the above message and I typed S.Ubuntu started ok however I lost my eth0 interface. In the network tools, I only find the Loopback interface, no eth0 anymore.Do I have to reinstall from scratch ?

I've posted this question already on opensuse@opensuse.org, however perhapsthat is not the right mailing list, while this forum is dedicated to such questions. And there seems to be much more activity on this forum then on the general mailinglist ---- and I hope to get some answer sooner than later (don't know how to proceed).I ran an update from 11.3 to 11.4, using the 11.4 64-bitDVD, and additionally Internet sources. When it then came to reboot, I got a screen

I don't know why but my server is no longer successfully updating its security repositories when I run 'apt-get update' on my system. Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.Did I mess something up? No changes have been made to the server and I ran 'apt-get clean' and that didn't really do much.

I wanted to try out the new Ubuntu 10.04, but since I don't have any CD's available I thought I could use my 9.10 CD and upgrade from it.
1. Installed 9.10 on the entire disk.
2. Went to update manager(?) and clicked the button to upgrade to 10.04
3. It successfully downloaded all the files.
4. When installing the new files it suddenly said that it failed to update, and it stopped. Then I went to do a hardware test, but none of the menus were working.
I had to do a manual shutdown, and reboot the computer. This time I was met with an error "Unable to mount root fs".
I figured the upgrade was the problem, so I reinstalled 9.10 to try without upgrading.
1. Reinstalled 9.10 on the entire disk.
2. Went to update manager(?) and started the normal update for 9.10 so the system would be up-to-date.
3. Same thing happened now, it fails to update and it makes my computer useless.
I've already checked my hardware for errors, can't find any. I've checked the CD for errors, can't find any. I had 9.04 on the same computer a few weeks ago, and it was rock-solid. Worked like a dream. I'm using Win7 now though.

I believe this has something to do with a power outage while upgrading a few days ago. Most of the install completed after rebooting, all except the three 'linux kernel image' files and a few others. Also, as a side issue, Flash plugin and Flex builder are no longer working. This may be unrelated. Does any one have any trouble shooting advice for the issue?
