I just installed FC12 and was trying to do the security update, but it encountered an "internal error" and asked me to "report this bug to the distribution's bugtracker" with the details. However, I am not sure exactly what to do. Could someone be kind enough to let me know?

I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.
I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?
I don't know why but my server is no longer successfully updating its security repositories when I run 'apt-get update' on my system.Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.Did I mess something up? No changes have been made to the server and I ran 'apt-get clean' and that didn't really do much.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to get pam_tally2 to block failed logins with ssh. No matter how many failed logins I do I can still log in with the correct password using SSH. Anyone have this working?
Here are the configuration I am using. I have put this in sshd and password-auth-ac.

I've been a long time ubuntu/debian user, and I decided to give fedora a try. Durng my first set of updates after install, the updater (gpk) seemed to stall on an 'updating libraries' step (it lasted for over 12 hours). Anyway, I force quit the program, restarted the system, and all appears fine. What I wanted to ask is this; is there some way to check the yum log to see if the update completed successfully, or an equivalent to 'apt-get -f install' to fix any broken/partially installed packages.

However I cannot use the dual monitor any more - just see the cloned two monitors... I suspect something happened during update. ATI catalyst control center says I need to run it as superuser, but I do not know how to.
View 4 Replies View RelatedLately I tried to update my nvidia drivers from RPFMFusion repos. There was a new version 275 available, so I installed it. After a reboot I would repeatedly see the Nviia Logo followed by black followed by a glimpse at the CLI with some error message. This process continues over and over again and it is so fast that the only thing I could make out from the error message is the following:
at-spi-bus-laun[some-number] segfault at 980 ...
in libx11.so.6.3.0 ...
I tried completely removing the driver then updating my system (there were no updates) then booting with nouveau to see that that actually works. Then I tried reinstalling the nvidia driver following leigh's guide [URL]. Same error.
This is where I'm stuck at the moment. Booting to runlevel 3 I had a look into the messages and Xorg.0.log, but I didn't see anything. Maybe I can get the log files uploaded.
I will boot from live media and provide them later on.

There is one addition I can make. Before, when I was using the 270 driver, I tried playing some games via wine and that also segfaulted on me (most of the time - 1 worked), so I think there is a general issue with the nvidia drivers on my system. But back then It was only wine, not X.
im a long time Ubuntu user that is giving Fedora a spin using Virtualbox on my Win7 machine. I have managed to get it up and running and guest additions working but have run into a problem with a few of the updates available in the Software Updates section.
It originally had around 75+ updates to install and seemed to do this fine. Unfortunately after a reboot and new check it comes up with 11 new updates. When I run install updates it gives me an error (see this post title) along with this bit of gibberish:

But it is needed by thunderbird update in the course of "yum update". yum exits with RC 1.Is "--skip-broken" the right way to exclude the thunderbird update ("Resolve depsolve problems by removing packages that are causing problems from the transaction")? From the GUI, software update gives the error "Failed to Initialize - Failed to initialize the packaging backend. This may occur if other packaging tools are being used simultaneously." In the more details, "There are unfinished transactions remaining.
I run a terminal, switch to root and do as it tells me. It returns saying that there are no unfinished transactions. I've run it several times with the same result. Then I run "yum clean all" and "yum upgrade." The upgrade processes runs and reports "there are unfinished transactions..." However, the upgrade process still completes. Basically it is now a severe annoyance, but the system does seem to upgrade. I just cannot figure out why there are somehow unfinished transactions that I cannot get rid of. I tried reinitializing the rpm database - no luck. How can I somehow reset yum?
Today i upgraded my system and started getting error when i update, install or remove a package. The error isn't restricted only to one repository so i thing something is wrong with my system.

Yesterday, I updated my system with the latest security update and other software updates. Following the update, I am not able to log into the system after restart.As usual, I was prompted with the login page which looks as per normal. I chose my login id and entered my password. It brings me briefly to my desktop showing only my wallpaper (without any upper and bottom taskbars/panels). Then the screen went blank and the login page appeared again.I entered the login id and password, was shown the desktop wallpaper, screen went blank and the login page appeared. This continues over and over and over. After multiple tries and with some luck, I am able to log in as per normal.What seems to be the problem?
1. How do I check the system for errors?
2. How do I check which update has been updated?
3. Is there any way for me to restore to its original state (I migrated from FC10 to FC11 via yum update)?
The only other change apart from the security update is that I installed wine - which has been uninstalled the moment I was able to re-logged in.I attach the details of my grub.conf file below which I hope could be of some useful info.
Today (25 of March) Fedora 10 asked to install latest security updates. I allowed it to install them and everything seemed ok. But after the next boot I understood that some applications won't launch. Skype, last.fm player, VirtualBox - all the qt ones. I've reinstalled those apps, and reinstalled qt. They still don't launch.When I execute one of them from terminal - it just waits and nothing happens.The process really starts, I can see it from ps -A and gnome's System Monitor.Here's the /var/log/yum.log for March 25th:

I know very little about SE Linux and I've heard that in some situations it's better to disable it. For a home user, is it important? Does it improve your life ? or does it get in the way ?
Last week some update stopped my printing and I had to install the new hplip from HP because it wasn't in the Fedora repos to correct the problem. I don't know if SELinux had anything to do with it, but today when I disabled SELinux a few minutes later I get a star up on the toolbar and when I clicked on it it mentioned something about hplip. It wouldn't make any sense to me but maybe this has happened to others.
Just finished a security update, (Fedora 12) and it said I had to restart the computer to have it take effect. When I restarted, all I got was the "Compaq" logo....forever. No Grub2 (it's a three system set up), no bios, just the brand name of the box. Even worse, when I tried going at it with a live cd, the same thing; the bios never loads, so no live cd fix.

As far as I can make out, a security update that I applied prior to my attempt to install gcc has caused problems. I did a new SL6 install (x86_86) a couple of weeks ago. This was a minimal installation, and I didn't install any dev tools, as I intended to install them later from yum. Since then, I've done very little; I installed a few packages (samba, xemacs, etc), and I let the system update itself. The update installed 'kernel', and updated 'kernel-firmware' [URL]. I now need to install the dev tools (g++, and so on), but I can't. I've tried this from gpk-application, and directly from yum. The complete yum output is below, but the basic error is:

I have wordpress server running on my machine and I have SELinux enabled for enforcing/targeted. I am unable to insert images, music, etc from the add new post field on the wordpress dashboard. I receive the following error:
image.jpg has failed to upload due to an error The uploaded file could not be moved to /var/www/html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10. When I disable SELinux completely, it works fine. Does anyone know what Boolean I need to check to resolve this issue?
